Tablet or laptop?

Desktop will be hard to replace since servers are just big desktops, desktops are always going to be more powerful than tablet or laptop. laptop is not meant to take the whole 8 hour a day work that desktop are used to.

desktops are easier to manage and support, easier and cheaper to change hardware parts.

just my 2 cents

My school was looking at getting MS Surface tablets for the a level language classes...

Didn't know you can get a Surface with full Win8

i love my transformer infinity as well.

but the new windows 8 laptop/tablets that are coming out look pretty cool.

That is why I see tablets replacing laptops completely within a couple years. Windows 8 and the devices released lately, or are set to be released soon (Surface Pro) are really starting to blur that line.

Imho tablets will not replace laptops (at least during our generation is alive) since they are used for different goals and in different ways. I have a tablet and 2 laptops (each for its own task) and I really do not imagine how it is to normally work from a tablet (still it is great for out-of-office presentations)

On a consumer level, I think tablets and smart devices in general will eventually replace a lot of household electronics. Computers, TV's, game systems, etc. Businesses on the other hand, may continue to use PC's for things such as large databases, digital artwork, and other more demanding tasks, at least until Android and iOS can handle it.

Same here, something like a tablet-computer hybrid will probably become the industry standard soon.

Look at windows RT and windows 8, whether people like it or not, it's optimized for touchscreens and give it enough time people will accept windows 8.

when I say tablets, I think of touchscreen mobile devices- nothing specific. I don't think modern tablets, as they currently stand can really replace laptops. Not as powerful, much less storage, way less programs and functionality. But give it a few more years, and I think we'll be able to make a tablet that's powerful enough to run a full desktop OS. Add in things like the ultra thin keyboard windows RT has, and web integration like how Chrome books and Jolicloud OS does it, and I think we'll have something that can kill laptops.

It already exists. Google for Surface Pro, Asus 808 and HP Envy X2. Those things are running full desktop Windows 8 on a tablet body. Touch screen sporting intel i5 2.5Ghz x86 processors (this means this can run anything your desktop can run).

I see the laptop as the aging dinosaur here, not the desktop. While laptops are pretty impressive now there is always a desktop that can do more and for that reason they are not going to disappear. Laptops on the other hand are quickly being overtaken by tablets in power and capability, especially when adding a keyboard to a tablet whether it is BT or a plug in. Until tablets start coming in larger sizes they won't fully replace laptops but they will and probably sooner than everybody thinks.

Asus announced a prototype earlier this year, an 18" tablet running Windows that has a docking station to convert it to a desktop PC. This is the perfect solution for me, I can work at the office or grab the tablet and a BT keyboard and work from the road with the full power and capability I have at my desk.:D

Would anyone really want an 18 inch tablet? - that's quite a large thing to hold. And if you do use it at a table or desk with a supporting keyboard-dock, it basically is a two-part laptop. :D

BTW I just bought a Lenovo S110 10 inch netbook/laptop, because I wanted a compact lightweight easily carried device for work, home and travel. I need Windows, MS Office, a VGA connector, along with a real keyboard to type on.

There is a reason my title says under paid sasquatch, 18 is just fine for me!:D

For real productivity larger is better, 18 probably being at the extremes just like laptops but there would be a market for it.

As far as the dock it is actually a small stand with an optical drive, akin to an all-in-one.

Meh, an 18inch tablet wont be much bigger than a 17inch laptop, and people lug those around everyday. I used to own one.

I say the same thing about a 5.5" phone, but a lot of people love the Note and Note2. I would never own one as I think it is way too big for a phone, just like I would never own an 18" tablet. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would love it
