Tablet Recommendations?

Hello guys,
I am new to Android. I want to install Android 3 or Android 2.3 on a touchpad. I want to modify os to root level to remove few features (including having sound only through headphone pin) from that. I want to know is it possible? on which os? I also want to know which company's device should I buy? Please redirect me to other forum/ thread if my question is not connected to this thread.

I moved this post to the Android Lounge as I feel that is where this discussion belongs (originally posted in the NookColor section).

I don't know about removing the sound permanently, buy you can have 2.3 or 3.0 on some tablets. 2.3 is only available (as far as I know) via rooting you device (I don't think any tablets are shipping with 2.3).

I just put the Phiremod ROM on my son's NookColor a few days ago and it is really nice. I used v5 and now I see that v6 is available as of 4/13...I suppose it's time to flash the latest update
