Tapatalk user revolt

Yeah, having just checked it out, they should definitely have launched this as a separate entity..... Did they even beta test it??

I do like the idea of multiple versions, but it would be a lot of extra work for the dev. so I doubt they will go there. Still, they are rapidly running out of feet to shoot themselves in.

We'll be rolling out 3.4 (iOS) & 4.11 (Android) in next few days as we finished up some UI improvement based on the recent feedback.

Of course that could mean anything, including making it worse.
Based on comments from the Tapatalk forum moderator, I'd guess these are minor tweaks to the current version such as reducing the amount of wasted space.

I sure hope they got some beta testers this time around to test out the new changes.

As far as where people get older versions from their own backups. As CS mentioned, alternate download sites often have malware embedded.

Hmm... stick with the current version, or go with a potentially malware-infested old version. Not an easy choice!

I think they're missing the elephant in the living room. The reality is that online forums *are* heavily male. A pretty forum browsing app isn't going to change that.

They don't seem to get that they're selling a tool to access content generated by others. People who aren't interested in the content won't buy the tool regardless of the UI.

Doubtful. The very few responses by Tapatalk in their own forum after the latest update has been to the effect of "the best thing to do is tweak the current version". They have no intention of rolling back to the older (and better) versions. Seems they are committed to making Tapatalk more like Pinterest and Facebook.

The best thing they could do is burn the current version. I understand now wanting to throw away months of development work and revert to a prior version, but it's a far better choice then continuing on their current path and throwing away years of work and user loyalty.

I'm so thankful that I backup my apps on a semi-regular basis. I'm running 4.8.3 (paid) now, which doesn't seem to work well with Xenforo, but the overall experience is excellent when compared to the current version.

^This, x1000!

It's pointless turning TT into a social networking app when the forums it's used to access are already social networks themselves. The devs need to forget about adding their own features and concentrate on supporting those.
But the pretty pictures and "trending" feature are going to get more women using Tapatalk, or so their reasoning seems to go.

Woman in the House! Only read "tech" forums. "Trending" features are skipped by me completely. I tend to go straight to my "subscribed" forum areas....

Oh.... I keep the apk of versions I like in my Dropbox. (Rooted and backed up thanks to my "techy" forums.......) Currently using Tapatalk 4.8.3

I say we take off and nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Seriously though, the only way their reasoning could be more patronising would be if they released a pink version of the app for women. And that would be preferable to borking the usability.

Just to add another complaint...

Besides the crappie UI on this new version of Tapatalk...I have noticed, that I am no longer able to get to a linked page...

It seems that the Tapatalk 'redirect' no longer works properly

To be fair I get that a lot with the older version I am using. Might be a xenforo compatibility - I've not really studied what fora I get it on. Or it could be Tapatalk servers rather than the app.

I went to the Play Store to update my (already 1 star) review to make sure it counted as being for the current version, and as I was typing it I read the app description:

Tapatalk connects you to people who share your own passions and interests. Millions of members are online now, sharing their expert opinions with others who can truly appreciate them. Tapatalk is different from traditional social media--the people you meet will be as excited by your hobby as you are.

Tapatalk doesn't connect me to people who share my passions and interests - the forums do that. Tapatalk is not social media. I don't know of anyone who uses Tapatalk to find forums of interest; anyone I know who uses Tapatalk uses it for mobile access to forums they're already participating in some other way (maybe Tapatalk's developers have heard of browsers on desktop computers?).

Tapatalk is a tool, and nothing more. Trying to make it more, or appear to be more, is what's screwing it up.

I've used Tapatalk to search for forums, and even joined one forum via Tapatalk. Basically because I didn't have a desktop or laptop computer available at the time, I wasn't at home. But that was using the old Tapatalk app, 4.6.2, from the "Explore" screen, and that's always been there AFAIK. I'm still using 4.6.2 now.

Yeah, they removed it from the Play Store, though some of us are still using it anyway. The only app they offer now is free to download with in app purchase options, and now a borked user interface.

What are the IAPs? Themes or additional functionality?

I paid for the pro version, I'd be pretty pissed if they were now offering features I used to have with that as an IAP.

I don't know - I stuck with the Pro version, and when I installed the new one the other day to test I didn't keep it long enough to find out what they were.

But this post from last year says that they would use your Tapatalk ID to carry over your paid features to the new TT. Of course that only works if you created a Tapatalk ID before the Pro app was retired and if you log in using the Tapatalk ID. So if like me you never created a TT ID in the first place then nope, they'd expect you to pay again.

I don't see any in-app purchases available in 4.10.2. VIP status is available to people who bought the Pro version by sending Ken a pm with your Tapatalk ID and a screen shot of the purchase email or of the record in the Play Store. But Ken is at Festival right now so it might take a while.

What a way to run a business. Everyone is in their own silo. No communication.

I see a "Winter Wong", "Yao Hu", "Min Chan" and a "Howdy Dong" ... I don't know where they are, but here we're just about to start very long festival holiday, maybe upto six weeks for some people. A time when most people go home, be with their families, and to forget about work completely. Is Tapatalk actually a Chinese company? I know they have an office in Shanghai(Ken's silo probably), and their web domain details are hidden behind an anonymous GoDaddy proxy.
