I'd like to share with you some suggestions and tweaks you can do to your phone that will ABSOLUTELY SAVE YOUR BATTERY POWER!! These steps should be followed WITHOUT THE USE OF A TASK KILLER!! The EVO is my FIRST Android phone and like sooooo many people, a task killer was one of the FIRST APPS I installed. Killing this one, killing that one...only to have them pop up again!! WTF!?!?! I didn't launch this...why is it coming back!!?? KILL KILL DIE DIE DIE!!!!
Guess what....it is **FUTILE**!!
My phone when in for repair for about 3 weeks and during that time I did a TON of reading on Task Killing and battery saving techniques. I got my phone back the DAY OS 2.2 was released, installed Froyo and NEVER AGAIN LOOKED AT A TASK KILLER!!! Instead I followed most of the steps below.
**NOTE**....I did NOT come up with this list. I have compiled this list from MANY sources on the internet!! This list may NOT be exhaustive but, for me and others, appears to IMPROVE THE BATTERY!!! The KEY to understanding is that it is NOT running apps that, in and of themselves consume battery, but the UPDATES and BACKGROUND ACTIONS that do. Many MANY of these background actions and updates can be SIGNIFICANTLY CONTROLLED or TURNED OFF COMPLETELY!!!
So, go ahead and kill just ONE MORE APP....KILL YOUR TASK KILLER!!!...UNINSTALL IT...and then try the settings below.
Let me know if this works!!!

----------------------------
SETTINGS:
Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks. TURN OFF 4G, Hotspot, Bluetooth and Wifi. Turn them BACK ON when needed...they do NOT have to be running and running in the background!!
NOTE that 3G and 4G use more battery than Wifi so use Wifi if its available.
Menu - Settings - Location. UNCHECK the Use GPS satellites box
Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - 4G Settings. In order to UNCHECK the "Network Notification" box you have to TURN ON 4G FIRST, then uncheck the box, then turn 4g BACK OFF (uncheck it).
You CAN try shutting OFF 3G as well (aka "Mobile Network") however there is some CONTROVERSY as to the necessity and the effect of this setting. I, personally, leave it ON but you can try it and see if anything isn't functioning correctly.
Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - Wifi Settings. In order to UNCHECK the "Network Notification" box you have to TURN ON WIFI FIRST, then uncheck the box, then turn WIFI BACK OFF (uncheck it).
Menu - Settings - Sound. Turn OFF the Haptic Feedback option ("mime is money" and vibration is battery life!!)
Menu - Settings - Display - Brightness. Set Brightness to AS LOW AS COMFORTABLE FOR YOUSELF. You'd be surprised when, in MANY circumstances a setting of 15 TO 20% is GOOD!! Using Automatic Brightness consumes MORE BATTERY because of a sensor that is utilized by the phone.
Menu - Settings - Display - Screen timeout. The LOWER the BETTER. However, I find that sometimes the lower setting is ANNOYING...especially if you have the lock screen enabled. If you are DILIGENT with hitting the button on the top of the EVO like I am to sleep the screen then set to a REASONABLE amount. Me personally? I like 1 or 2 minutes to allow me to have the phone stay on if I turn away for a bit.
Menu - Settings - Display - Animation. Set to NO ANIMATION. This DOES NOT appear to affect your Weather animation!!
Menu - Settings - Accounts & Sync. TURN OFF/UNCHECK the Auto sync box
Sync circles should go from green to gray. You can ALWAYS come back here and do a MANUAL SYNC when necessary for Weather, News, Stocks, Google items
News - Account settings - Update Schedule. Choose MANUAL.
Stocks - Account settings - Update schedule. Color should be GRAY (i.e., NOT active/turned on)
Weather- Accounts settings - Set a MINIMUM UPDATE for your personal use
APPLICATIONS:
(by NO MEANS an exhaustive list in light of 3rd Party apps but these are most of the stock ones that you can control)
Mail App - Menu - More - Settings - Send & Receive. Set Frequency for Peak & Off peak times ONCE A DAY
Mail App - Menu - More - Settings - General Settings. Check REFRESH WHEN OPEN. When you open your mail app it will automatically download your mail upon opening. If you only check mail once a day and you have it set to do so, you do NOT need this box checked. Otherwise you can control battery use by manually checking your mail when you open you app.
Fring App. Make sure you are SIGNED OUT and LOGGED OFF when closing
Fring App - Menu - Settings. TURN OFF Automatic Startup
Sprint Zone App - Menu - Settings. Set Update Frequency to EVERY MONTH.
News App - Menu - Settings. Make sure update schedule says MANUAL
Stocks App - Menu - Settings - Auto Sync data and Update Schedule boxes should be GREYED OUT. Auto Sync Data box should be UNCHECKED. If you do not use the stocks app then UNCHECK the Update when Opened box otherwise, if you use the app, leave the box checked and it will manually update when you open it.
Weather App - Menu - Settings. UNCHECK the Update Automatically Box. Then hit the refresh button in the lower left of the weather app screen to refresh your clock/weather widget.
Talk App - Menu - Settings. UNCHECK Automatically sign in box and make sure you SIGN OUT. Hitting "back" button will NOT SIGN YOU OUT!!
News & Weather App - Menu - Settings - Refresh Settings. UNCHECK Auto-refresh box. You can MANUALLY refresh on your own.
WALLPAPER:
Animated Wallpaper WILL consume battery power. Avoid if you can...unless you GOTTA show off your phone!
WIDGETS:
Widgets that need access to the internet in order to update themselves WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY depending upon how often you have the app set to update the widget. Every app/widget is different but some NEED to access the internet such as the HTC clock/weather widget, any other weather widgets, Friendstream, Facebook, News, News & Weather, Sprint Football Live, Stocks, Twitter, Mail, Nascar, and the Market. The suggestion is to SHUT THEM OFF...do NOT install on your home screens...if you DO use them and are suffering from battery issues, YOU HAVE BEEN FOREWARNED!!
**NOTE** if you use Facebook, Twitter, Friendstream or ANY OTHER 3rd party apps MAKE SURE those apps' sign in/update/send/receive settings are OFF and/or set to MANUAL, etc.
***ALSO NOTE*** that you MIGHT consider some of these settings OVERKILL or just not good for YOUR personal use. That is FINE!!! Just know that you are **FOREWARNED**....the MORE you turn these battery-draining items OFF, the MORE battery you will have. If you NEED or WANT to keep some widget or app refreshing on its own in the background it WILL use the battery!!
So try the "overkill" first and then add back stuff you want or can't live without. At LEAST give it a chance to see some improvement...and WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A TASK KILLER!!!!
