Decided to trust Androids OS and let it manage itself. Phone completely died in 7 hours(some usage)...usually ill get 15(some usage)...So all my questions I had about Atk is finally put to rest...It should be mandatory!
No, you just proved you have an app that's chewing up your battery and spitting it out. Hardly justification for "manditory".

lol everyone's definition of light/moderate/heavy usage is different. sorry but most of you who get that kind of battery life with the stock battery are light users. there is a such thing as fact vs fiction.

Fact: if you are a 'heavy' user by the true definition of heavy; which would mean heavy, not what you think is heavy; you would get no where near 14-20 hours, period.

In this case, it doesn't matter if there's no standard gauge of usage. It's the difference in battery life between task killer usage and no task killer usage. You can assume your daily usage is held constant, whether it be light, medium, or heavy by anyone's standard.

The OP and others, claim that based on his/her average usage, ATK increases their battery life. And others, me included, experience no difference in battery life, and we're satisfied with the life that we're getting based on whatever our usage may be.

Objectively, I'd consider myself a light user, but I guarantee you that if the OP were to use his phone exactly as I use mine, my battery would outlast his/hers. Because I spent the time removing all of the unnecessary drain. The OP hasn't, and is relying on a task killer to blindly kill stuff with the hope that it kills something causing battery drain.

Everytime I try to install unrevoked it says "arrrggh couldn't create the damn marker" what am I doing wrong.

Slick is coming in the house and I'm going to shut it down like Steve Erkel. Lauraaaaaa

Anyway, if I grabbed hendodo's phone with a task killer and the stock battery installed. I'm willing to bet $1K that his phone would die between 4 to 4.5 hours by browsing the internet the whole time. People running a task killer with the stock battery run this test yourself. Its not going to stop your battery from going bye-bye after 4 hours of nothing but internet use.

Someone running a task killer please explain to me how your task killer is going to extend the life of your battery by me only utilizing one app, the internet? You can't because ATK does not account for data usage. ATK cannot determine how much data an app uses or it would shut down the internet app if it did. ATK kills processes and apps which grab some memory because android likes to fill its memory with apps you may use. I think ATK killed some of your brains if you still utilize the app. People phones die because of DATA BEING SENT/RECEIVED BY THE PHONE from certain apps.

Considering there are tons of people getting decent battery life without ATK (or other task killers) and without rooting, you ought to take a closer look at what's actually causing the drain, rather than blindly killing tasks.

Or you can continue to use ATK. Your phone; your choice. Just don't declare that it be mandatory, because clearly, it isn't.
I've had my phone since June 5th...downloaded Atk June 6th...used it everyday no problems. The one day I decide not to use it it dies in 7 hours. I use my phone the same every day. Only texting, phone calls and some internet. Yesterday was no different. What works for my evo may not work for yours. Sorry

Your phone died because you are lazy and never set the correct settings on your phone. ATK kills the apps that use data. Since you never adjusted the settings in your apps, of course the phone drained. But then again I bet you don't know the difference between idle time drainage vs drainage through usage. I hate when people say their phone drained. how did the phone drain? Was it sitting or were you using the phone for 7 hours?

My settings are set! Nothing syncing at all! Everything turned off, even mobile. i know how to use my phone. I did all kinds of research even before I purchased it and when i got it i did more. Maybe u should do some and your phone wouldn't suck so much...muahahahaaa

I have had my evo a billing period, during that time i have dl atk twice once before the 2.2 and once after ...
it did not make a difference, either way it does not do a thing but give you something to ? about ... YOU DO NOT NEED IT !!!
That would be on the EVO all others ME NOT KNOW

If you are using a task killer you will notice that once you kill an app it pops right back up

The following is an example of how apps are handled by android with task killers and without

Apps on the SD card are books on the shelf (not using battery)
Apps in RAM are books on the coffee table (not using battery)
Apps in use are books you are reading (using CPU/BATTERY)

ANDROID WITHOUT AN AUTOMATED TASK KILLER
Android OS moves books from bookshelf to coffee table (using CPU/BATTERY)
Android OS moves books back to the bookshelf when you are done reading them and when the coffee table gets full (using CPU/BATTERY)
End of story

ANDROID WITH AN AUTOMATED TASK KILLER
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
ATK uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the coffee table to the bookshelf
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
ATK uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the coffee table to the bookshelf
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
ATK uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the coffee table to the bookshelf
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
ATK uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the coffee table to the bookshelf
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
ATK uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the coffee table to the bookshelf
The OS uses CPU/BATTERY to move books from the bookshelf to the coffee table
Never ending story...

My completely unbiased reply -

I just got an EVO, have had it about a week now. Which means I have that "oh man I just got this phone, I can't put it down" syndrome.

My battery life is actually amazing - I easily go through a whole day, and then just charge over night.

No task killing here - the phone works like a champ.

I'd like to share with you some suggestions and tweaks you can do to your phone that will ABSOLUTELY SAVE YOUR BATTERY POWER!! These steps should be followed WITHOUT THE USE OF A TASK KILLER!! The EVO is my FIRST Android phone and like sooooo many people, a task killer was one of the FIRST APPS I installed. Killing this one, killing that one...only to have them pop up again!! WTF!?!?! I didn't launch this...why is it coming back!!?? KILL KILL DIE DIE DIE!!!!

Guess what....it is **FUTILE**!!

My phone when in for repair for about 3 weeks and during that time I did a TON of reading on Task Killing and battery saving techniques. I got my phone back the DAY OS 2.2 was released, installed Froyo and NEVER AGAIN LOOKED AT A TASK KILLER!!! Instead I followed most of the steps below.

**NOTE**....I did NOT come up with this list. I have compiled this list from MANY sources on the internet!! This list may NOT be exhaustive but, for me and others, appears to IMPROVE THE BATTERY!!! The KEY to understanding is that it is NOT running apps that, in and of themselves consume battery, but the UPDATES and BACKGROUND ACTIONS that do. Many MANY of these background actions and updates can be SIGNIFICANTLY CONTROLLED or TURNED OFF COMPLETELY!!!

So, go ahead and kill just ONE MORE APP....KILL YOUR TASK KILLER!!!...UNINSTALL IT...and then try the settings below.

Let me know if this works!!!

Scott

----------------------------

SETTINGS:
Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks. TURN OFF 4G, Hotspot, Bluetooth and Wifi. Turn them BACK ON when needed...they do NOT have to be running and running in the background!!

NOTE that 3G and 4G use more battery than Wifi so use Wifi if its available.

Menu - Settings - Location. UNCHECK the Use GPS satellites box

Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - 4G Settings. In order to UNCHECK the "Network Notification" box you have to TURN ON 4G FIRST, then uncheck the box, then turn 4g BACK OFF (uncheck it).

You CAN try shutting OFF 3G as well (aka "Mobile Network") however there is some CONTROVERSY as to the necessity and the effect of this setting. I, personally, leave it ON but you can try it and see if anything isn't functioning correctly.

Menu - Settings - Wireless & Networks - Wifi Settings. In order to UNCHECK the "Network Notification" box you have to TURN ON WIFI FIRST, then uncheck the box, then turn WIFI BACK OFF (uncheck it).

Menu - Settings - Sound. Turn OFF the Haptic Feedback option ("mime is money" and vibration is battery life!!)

Menu - Settings - Display - Brightness. Set Brightness to AS LOW AS COMFORTABLE FOR YOUSELF. You'd be surprised when, in MANY circumstances a setting of 15 TO 20% is GOOD!! Using Automatic Brightness consumes MORE BATTERY because of a sensor that is utilized by the phone.

Menu - Settings - Display - Screen timeout. The LOWER the BETTER. However, I find that sometimes the lower setting is ANNOYING...especially if you have the lock screen enabled. If you are DILIGENT with hitting the button on the top of the EVO like I am to sleep the screen then set to a REASONABLE amount. Me personally? I like 1 or 2 minutes to allow me to have the phone stay on if I turn away for a bit.

Menu - Settings - Display - Animation. Set to NO ANIMATION. This DOES NOT appear to affect your Weather animation!!

Menu - Settings - Accounts & Sync. TURN OFF/UNCHECK the Auto sync box
Sync circles should go from green to gray. You can ALWAYS come back here and do a MANUAL SYNC when necessary for Weather, News, Stocks, Google items

News - Account settings - Update Schedule. Choose MANUAL.
Stocks - Account settings - Update schedule. Color should be GRAY (i.e., NOT active/turned on)
Weather- Accounts settings - Set a MINIMUM UPDATE for your personal use

APPLICATIONS:
(by NO MEANS an exhaustive list in light of 3rd Party apps but these are most of the stock ones that you can control)

Mail App - Menu - More - Settings - Send & Receive. Set Frequency for Peak & Off peak times ONCE A DAY
Mail App - Menu - More - Settings - General Settings. Check REFRESH WHEN OPEN. When you open your mail app it will automatically download your mail upon opening. If you only check mail once a day and you have it set to do so, you do NOT need this box checked. Otherwise you can control battery use by manually checking your mail when you open you app.

Fring App. Make sure you are SIGNED OUT and LOGGED OFF when closing
Fring App - Menu - Settings. TURN OFF Automatic Startup

Sprint Zone App - Menu - Settings. Set Update Frequency to EVERY MONTH.

News App - Menu - Settings. Make sure update schedule says MANUAL

Stocks App - Menu - Settings - Auto Sync data and Update Schedule boxes should be GREYED OUT. Auto Sync Data box should be UNCHECKED. If you do not use the stocks app then UNCHECK the Update when Opened box otherwise, if you use the app, leave the box checked and it will manually update when you open it.

Weather App - Menu - Settings. UNCHECK the Update Automatically Box. Then hit the refresh button in the lower left of the weather app screen to refresh your clock/weather widget.

Talk App - Menu - Settings. UNCHECK Automatically sign in box and make sure you SIGN OUT. Hitting "back" button will NOT SIGN YOU OUT!!

News & Weather App - Menu - Settings - Refresh Settings. UNCHECK Auto-refresh box. You can MANUALLY refresh on your own.

WALLPAPER:
Animated Wallpaper WILL consume battery power. Avoid if you can...unless you GOTTA show off your phone!

WIDGETS:
Widgets that need access to the internet in order to update themselves WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY depending upon how often you have the app set to update the widget. Every app/widget is different but some NEED to access the internet such as the HTC clock/weather widget, any other weather widgets, Friendstream, Facebook, News, News & Weather, Sprint Football Live, Stocks, Twitter, Mail, Nascar, and the Market. The suggestion is to SHUT THEM OFF...do NOT install on your home screens...if you DO use them and are suffering from battery issues, YOU HAVE BEEN FOREWARNED!!

**NOTE** if you use Facebook, Twitter, Friendstream or ANY OTHER 3rd party apps MAKE SURE those apps' sign in/update/send/receive settings are OFF and/or set to MANUAL, etc.

***ALSO NOTE*** that you MIGHT consider some of these settings OVERKILL or just not good for YOUR personal use. That is FINE!!! Just know that you are **FOREWARNED**....the MORE you turn these battery-draining items OFF, the MORE battery you will have. If you NEED or WANT to keep some widget or app refreshing on its own in the background it WILL use the battery!!

So try the "overkill" first and then add back stuff you want or can't live without. At LEAST give it a chance to see some improvement...and WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A TASK KILLER!!!!

I have to say I hated this forum very much after I got my Evo. I needed my ATK so my battery would last more than 3 hours, but then I got a program that showed me system processes and what they were doing. These open apps are just sitting there idle! By me using my task killer and closing em, its causing the phone to reopen them again and drain the battery. So I stopped using my ATK and have gotten amazing results (although hard for me to admit i was wrong :P )

I know use a program called system panel app and it shows me that those apps that are sitting there open are really doing nothing afterall! So now I do not use a task killer and I have been seeing some definite improvements in how my phone works. I now leave, sync, wifi, and gps on all day and by nighttime I'm still sitting above 50% battery. I really hope some of you try this out and see an improvement like I have!

Now if we can just get sprint to stop telling people to download app killers :P

Yea I was in the Sprint store the other day and they were insisting I add one....I was like are you guys out of your ****ing mind!!!! don't ever let them install apps for you. EVER!!!! I hate that, its called "its my phone", "I paid for it", "Leave it a ****ing lone!!!!!!"

I hope no one bashes me here, but I have a stupid question. How do you know which apps are draining you?? I've read most of the above pages, and implemented a lot of the suggestions. But where do you find out what's running and what's not>

I do have Running Settings installed but there isn't much running that doesn't look serious.

You can use Astro File Manager. It has a process viewer. But really you shouldn't worry to much about whats running, unless you are looking for an app that is hung up.

EDIT: No bashing required lol ;-)

so i followed some good advice last week and it has worked wonders!! My battery life is insane now and i havent even got my china battery yet lol. It was easy, after all the kinks from the other posts with voice, talk and all that other stuff. I deleted both task killer and Antivirus. Both of which are really not needed. And wow it has done wonders. Cant believe how much battery i have now. And i use my phone alot, heavy texting, slacker, facebook the usual. but maybe give it a try and see how it works for you :D

I installed Task Manager on my Droid X. It lets me see what's running a nd force close something if I want to, but it doesn't auto-kill tasks. ONLY reason I have it on there is that i installed an app called Fastest Droid that uses GPS to measure top speed, 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, and if I open it, it keeps the GPS on even after I'm done with it. Found that out when I opened it once, and when i checked the battery useage chart, it had used a LOT of battery, and said it had been open for 16 seconds, but left the GPS on for over an hour. So I pretty much have to force-kill that app so it doesn't kill my battery.

You could just turn GPS off/on. Don't know if you have an easy widget to do that like the EVO does though.

I'll try to keep this short:

I use Advanced Task Killer to kill off apps I'm not using (especially sprint apps)...mainly cuz i get a warm fuzzy for keeping the RAM plentiful...and it prevents Opera from auto-clearing background tabs due to lack of memory.

Recently I've noticed when I open ATK, I'll see apps like Pandora or Iheartradio open, when I haven't used them in a day or two. I'll hit the "kill all" button and go on with my happy day. About 20 minutes later I'll open ATK and they'll still be there (or they've reloaded in that 20 minutes.) which leads me to believe that either ATK isn't killing the program, or the EVO is an evil genius who loves to torture people who don't like background processes.

Any ideas or similar experiences? thanks!

I have never put any type of task killer on the evo. If these are truly rogue apps, they would be going under your "running services." If they aren't, they should be fine. Why the need for a task killer when you can stop the app from the "running services" section? Most of the time, the app removes itself from running after a few minutes anyway.
