Telus - htc desire 2.2

Got an email from Telus tonight:

that had better not be true. I'm no fan of Bell or Rogers but Telus really take the cake in awful service. The rest of the world has been enjoying 2.2 for quite a while now. What the hell does it take for us to get basic services without having to deal with a whole load of bull.

In the first place, it's pathetic that Telus can simply say "oh we don't know". HTC are right...it's awful customer service but we've put up with it all along. And now this? What the bloody hell? If they mean to release it in Q4, they should place it on their website and not fool around. It's bad enough that they won't tell their own clients anything but this is going too far.

That had definitely better not be true.

Got an email from Telus tonight:

I have a friend who knows someone well at Telus HO. And they both have the Desire as well. So far its HTC that has not forwarded the 2.2 update to Telus. Its not Telus's fault they don't have it. He says they have no reason to withhold onto it as it does them no use.
He is itching for the update as well and no one has told them anything of when to expect it. He advised my friend no one at Telus knows squat and are left in the dark like everyone else.

I just got a very generic response from HTC.
"I understand your concern regarding Android 2.2 on the Telus HTC Desire. Before releasing a ROM update we have to be sure that the software is going to work properly on your hardware and on your carrier

I've come to the conclusion that nobody at HTC or Telus knows anything about this. There are so many mixed messages and it's become one company blaming another for the delays in the update. We're just being bounced around from all these unconfirmed reports.

This is a bit off topic but if we replace HTC Sense does that mean that the default keyboard is gone too? I rather like it a lot and it's great at suggesting the right words. Also, if HTC Sense is replaced, is it possible to replace it via a download from HTC's website?

I've never really contemplated other UI's since I like Sense and it feels far more natural than iOS. However, maybe installing a new UI would help fix some of the problems I've been having with my phone.

I'm in the same boat as you...I don't want to void my warranty but feel a bit frustrated with the lack of straightforward information.

Like someone said before, its annoying to hear that this weekend
and then someone else say different, and then someone else say there is an update?

Calling HTC now, ill update after

UPDATE:
called HTC - no idea they sent it to telus already
called Telus and got an american WOHOOOO lol
he said they will not tell them dates just for reason they dont want to give wrong info if something happens and has to be pushed a few days ahead. Though with no luck, he did say they get emails that day when it is released GRRR.
Also, he told me they don't want people to calling and bitching if we give a date and it is not there. So i told him for your insanity i hope it does come before November 1st.

Lets hope, and if they do not release it, we should call ever hour bitching why has it not been released and refuse to give your phone number. Say why should i give you my number when you lie to your clients (FYI dont call from your cell, they will have the number then)

I have had froyo on my Desire for a month now and it is the stock froyo Ruu that is from HTC, my phone is not rooted and it has the very latest V.2.10.405.2. All you have to do is go to this thread http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html read the complete thread and follow the instructions and in a few minutes have Froyo also!!! My phone was a Telus desire but is now a unlocked, unbranded and get's all ota updates from HTC and I use it on the AT&T network in the U.S.!!!! Just as a side note I purchased my phone unlocked the firmware did not unlock it!

Hey guys, I got tired of waiting so I did the goldcard-ruu update posted here. It's really easy. Theres a tool tool to make you a goldcard, then its really only a few clicks. I got the latest .EXE for HTC Desire RUU (world wide english) and it went without a hitch. I did 3 more of my co-workers today using WinXP, Win7 (32) and a Win7 64bit.

All you need is the Sync 3.0 installed, make a goldcard, then run that .EXE and sit back for 5 minutes.

I did have issues on a pc where I had to use the rear USB port to get SYNC to see the phone, and on one Win7 machine it just wouldnt keep connected so I did it on a XP box. One of the phones crapped out halfway (power issue with the crappy usb bay) and the phone was stuck in a boot-loader type mode. Just took out the battery and redid it and all was fine, so I think theres no real danger here if you follow the guide as I've probably had the worst happen.

I can verify 2.2 runs quicker and does have some nicer features. Web browsing and looking at flash is waaay better. Can't say battery lasts longer though but I havnt put it down since I did the upgrade!

EDIT: The only thing I did differently from the guide was I used the newer RUU mentioned a bit later in the thread, the one ending with .....142828.exe, its the latest according to the site.

Theres also mention that you need unrevoked for something, but you dont need that, nor do you need to root your phone for this.

What he said!
:D
I bought mine from a BestBuy 2 days after launch, unlocked it 2 days later, and use it on Rogers. I've been running Froyo for over a month using the RUU update and it's great. If I was on Telus, I still would have done the update and not bothered with Telus' version.

I know its tempting to just do it as an unofficial update, but we have waited this long, it is the start of the weekend soon, we can wait a few more days.

I know I am waiting; 1 of 2 reasons
1. being fear of something going wrong with my phone and it is no longer covered.
2. Not know 100% how to root it with out screwing up the phone.
---------------------

I know we can do it. If it does not happen by the 31st, believe me
I know ill be calling every chance i get to ask when when when, telus is nothing but lairs, your site said october and its the 31st, when when when...

Hell the last rep i talked to, did not even know there was a 2.2 coming out..
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF US KNOWING MORE THEN THE COMPANY.
Hell even banks, i asked about the new wave on the credit cards and they did not know about it. I had to tell them to go to the site and look it up, and they said wow i guess we have that now.
So point taken we cant trust anyone, but who is 100% in charge of the release button.

I just made 2 gold cards, I'm almost ready... I'm giving Telus until Saturday.

PS. Will I lose all the sense widgets once I update to the HTC Froyo ROM?

well either way its still voiding the warranty? right ?
i must of missed it if it will not.
I don't see how it will void the warranty. It's an official and supported firmware version directly from HTC. If Telus refuses to honour warranty, then HTC should. I wasn't worried about warranty issues as I would take my Desire directly to HTC. Same goes for unlocking, it has nothing to do with the device working or not.

PS. Will I lose all the sense widgets once I update to the HTC Froyo ROM?
Not at all...the Froyo v2.2 update is a genuine unbranded HTC firmware, so it has the HTC SenseUI which includes the widgets. I'm running Froyo here and it's very similar to v2.1 except it's faster with more features.

So I went ahead and made a few phone calls. One to Telus and one to HTC.

After contacting Telus this morning they said the latest information they had was it would be out sometime in quarter 4. I said quarter 4 was made up of at minimum 3 months and that was an absurd time frame.

The guy didn't seem to care so I asked him if I decided to root my phone if I could be covered under warranty. He said all Telus employees are trained to look for custom roms and then not repair your phone if you do so. After getting little information from useless Telus I called HTC.

That phone call was way better. HTC has some of the best technical support ever. The guy said they had taken the update servers offline to fix a bug but that he thought they had been restored but it was unconfirmed. He said that Telus has little control over what they put into the update and it was a mostly HTC and Google thing, which was nice to hear. He said it should be back soon and we should have it any day now. I know that I am pretty anxious but I am going to give it until the 1st of November. If I get nothing from then I am just going to put it on myself and hope to god nothing happens to my phone.

If I hear anything else I will let you guys know.

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

Called Telus and got amazing news, he said like i said before 27 - 31st it was being pushed out.
He said because the website is down, it is because they are updating the servers to push out the Desire and Storm updates today.

**CK i hope its true.

What do you mean, "because the website is down". I hope this is true because the one thing worse than the delay is the "now you have it, oops! now you don't!" thing going on. Had Telus been careful with their "Update to Android 2.2 available now" statement on their website earlier this week, things would've been much calmer.
