Telus - htc desire 2.2

After seraching around the net, it seems that you can restore your ROM to a point as if it were never changed. [Complete Guide] How To Fully Back Up And Restore Your Android Phone Using Nandroid Backup | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Mods, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police Will try this method when I have time, but it seems that you can get the Telus OTA update if you want or go the unbranded way. I just don't get why there isn't a Telus shipped rom on shipped-roms.com

...so I am about to do this... but should I make my existing SD card a gold card, or have a dedicated (2GB) gold card that I can swap in and out when I need to.

What is the advantages if I always have a gold card in? (future OTA updates?)

There is certainly no harm in creating multiple gold cards in case one is corrupted, you can use the other to flash your future updates. Make both of them gold cards. That way you don't have to keep switching cards for updates with your existing one.

I'm not sure it's necessary to keep backup goldcards ... as long as you keep a copy of the .img file somewhere, wouldn't that be enough to recreate a goldcard anytime you need to?

Took the plunge myself too. Fed up waiting on Telus. Tried the upgrade via computer first but could not get past a "Error 171. No USB connection" message. Then tried the non computer method of placing the zip file on SD card. Success.
I've been reading this and other related threads here for several days before getting the confidence to proceed.
Just wanted to express a big thank you to the posters here that provided the technical guidance and know how. Wouldn't have tried without it.

can someone help me out a bit? im not a complete moron, but i cant make this work.
ive got the cold card part figured out and i downloaded the file, renamed it to (whatever it was).zip and put it on the sd card and tried the bootloader. it checks files but very quickly says says "no image"
ive redownloaded and renamed a few times with no luck

am i doing somehting wrong?
can someone possibly walk me through the last part of this?
the other threads seem pretty straight forward but i still cant make it work.

@albertnoel: I think I recall seeing something similar. Be patient and wait a little. I think the process looks for two or three different files before getting to the zip file.

oh i figured it out. i literally renamed it to exactly what it said.. so in the end it was .zip.zip and it couldn't figure out the file was even there. fixed it and now its working. now i feel like a moron haha

No, you need to create a new img file for each gold card that you want to create.

You have to remember Telus is notorious for slow updates.

or NO updates! No updates at all to the Touch Pro 2.
Had it not been for mightyroms mine would have been a frustrating piece of junk.

Thanks for your instructions in this thread.

I had a few questions as I am planing on doing this tomorrow.

I realised I will be relying on Telus after their 2.2 update and I think this is the most important factor...not just the delay in the 2.2 rollout.

One question I did have was regarding the APN settings so thanks as well to Dinaro for posting those in case I need them.

Here are the questions I do have:

1. I plan on using the Windows free solution so do I jump straight to 2.10.405.2 as mentioned in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire...-update-windows-not-required.html#post1597378
or use the 2.09.405.8 and run an OTA update right after?

2. I have programs installed on the card that came with the phone and plan on using it as the gold card. Do I factory reset the phone before removing the card and formatting it? Won't formatting the card and popping it back in cause an issue?

Thanks for all the great info!

1: I went with 2.09.405.8 for now. If you want to do the OTA update after you flash you're welcome to do so.

2: Doing a factory reset only wipes your phones internal stuff nothing on your SD card. So I would recommend backing up your phones data (ie contact list and other things that need to be manually backed up to your SD card and back up that content on your comp first. Format it to Fat32 and then gold card it. There will be no issues. Once you install the rom, delete the IMG.zip from the SD card and re-copy everything back to it from your backup.

Not to be the black sheep of this thread, but I'm gonna hold out a little longer for the update directly from Telus. ^_^''

The way I see it, I don't mind being patient awhile longer. The phone is still hellamazing on 2.1, though I'm sure once I get 2.2 I'll be all "WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG!" Call me crazy, but I don't wish to forfeit the warranty that came with the phone as well as the Futureshop warranty I bought on top of it.

Of course if it turns out it's not coming out until Q1 or 2 of next year....Well you all have the right to torment me to no end until I cave and do it myself :P

You are not the only one, I want to wait. This phone is a company (my company) phone and is very important that it is working, and i am scared that i will do something wrong to it. I am not very good with written instructions, there is to many Roms out there and well just not sure, I know you guys say its easy, its cause you have done it, and I am sure it is after you do it. Though like I said, Company phone cant have it screw up and I have no way of being contacted.

Ill just wait, its the last day and well ill be calling Telus at 10am to question and if they dont know I will demand to talk to the complaint department. And if they dont allow it, then ill ask is this convo being recorded, of course it will be. So ill say this is a formal complaint I am not happy about this, and I need to speak to someone about this, you dont want me to end this convo being an unhappy client.

If you think 2.1 runs smooth now wait till you try 2.2 :D.

If you bought an extra warranty I understand why you wouldn't go the unofficial way. The weird thing is, I don't think they'd ever know, unless they're really really tech saavy. Telus branding is still on the lockscreen and notification screen.

As of 11:25am seem to me Telus has FAILED. Unacceptable. I hate the fact that i have extended warranty and no one can say 100% that telus will not know if it has been rooted\unrooted......

Come Nov 1st, Ill be called and they will be sorry i called cause i will call every hour or more to find someone that knows something.
When i checked the site, it was Oct 10th, so from the time i checked it they had 20 days to check things out. Come on Telus you should not put something out there if your not 100% sure.

______
I want to do it so bad but like i said i am worried;
so if someone can help me out
I want the Sense UI and be able to get updates when HTC releases them

Was anyone even there today?...

well i just talk to Telus and he said it was not HTC or Telus that delayed it, Google did. But he did say that it is supposed to come out in the next two months. They posted the info on the site because that is what Google told them but Google then recalled the update because of problems. So right now i am so tempted to go the RUU way and update it now

btw, the "Telus branding" is probably your carrier, mine says rogers on the lock screen because it is an unlocked phone (not rooted and still under warranty) the only place theyd have to check is your app drawer for asphalt 5 and voice commander or a simple look at the software?

im a new telus customer. ive only been with telus for a little less than a month and i had no idea they were so bad with updates.
regardless, i took the plunge and updated to 2.2 via the RUU method and im glad i did!

i cant say enough good things about it. (also, is it just me or did the colour temp of the screen change with the update?)

i did notice that asphalt 5 and the voice commander are gone. (and obviously telus installed) can either of them be installed after the fact?

You have branding on the phone from Telus??When I got mine from mobilexpresscanada on e-bay there was only one game that was on the phone from them that could not be removed and the home page on the web was their home page that could not be changed and the 850 band would not work on Edge from AT&T that is it, after the stock Ruu was installed all of that was gone and nothing of Telus on the phone at all now and 850 Edge works fine now, it looks as if it came from HTC directly!!!!

Yeah I bought it from straight from Telus. Updated the RUU and the voice commander and asphalt 5 is gone but I still have Telus branding on the lockscreen and notification screen. I've no complaints, not a big deal for me.
