I keep getting Error 130: Model ID Error when running the RUU file. I've tried it on Win7 & XP, with 3 different MicroSD cards (Lexar, Sandisk, and Kingston), all with the same result, and have re-run the step for making the goldcard image as well. I've also tried 4 different versions numbers of the RUU file to no avail. Frustrating.

Telus Hero, purchased back in November.

And ID error means the goldcard hasn't worked (so no need to keep switching computers).

You should have a look at this guide: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-hero/96848-telus-htc-hero-root-guide.html It's very comprehensive.

Yes, it's a guide for rooting the phone, but it's the same process. (Except you install the latest generic ROM, not the one he mentions :) )

yea. like i said. do research on the ROM you choose. I chose Villian at the time but have since switched to SenseHero.

as for teh error. sounds like a gold card issue. I dont know what could be going wrong. does the computer recognize the gold card after its done? make sure you chose physical disk not logical.

Thanks, that was the problem. Yes, the computer had recognized the card fine. I started over and got an entirely different number in step 23 for some reason. Rooted & running VillainROM 10.3 now :)

Big props to djbasik for the guide. I finally got tired of waiting for Telus & HTC to release the 2.1 upgrade, and this is my best bet for eventually getting 2.2 as well.

I do note that I've got significantly less from RAM now. After killing everything with Advanced Task Killer I'm only showing about 45 megs free, whereas before rooting it would usually be around 88 megs.

Hmm, my last post makes no sense. Why did I link you to the same thread we were posting in? =/

I guess I was still thinking about debranding the phone; that's what everyone round here seems to be doing at the moment.

SOLUTION to the following problem!

Hey guys. So while I was bored at work today I had a chance to do some research on this issue, and have apparently found a solution. As of about 30 mins ago and 3 phone calls later this is the solution.

****Download update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22-signed.zip**** and flash it like you would a normal ROM.
1.) Reboot the phone using home + Power
2.) Flash the previously downloaded file from the SD card
3.) Reboot 2x
4.) Phone should work fine without needing to reset or adjust settings

I guess the problem was exactly as I thought before with the North American vs. World radio files.

So far this is working perfectly for me, and I have yet to find any glitches, and I will post if/when I do. Otherwise enjoy, and I accept no responsibility if this does not work for you.

THANKS!

This works it is confirmed. I will be adding this to the tutorial! Don't worry I will give you credit not to worry.

This is strange. Before rooting my phone I never performed a real performance test. BUT!

on a clean fresh wipe I ran around 75M free 0 apps installed other than those that came with the ROM. and all apps that were not necessary killed.

Today if I kill every app. I get around 55-75, I have even had 80 once that I remember.

lol...

debranding isn't really necessary for Telus users. The telus phone came with no real branding at all. We got lucky. unless there is branding that I don't know about...

I'm currently runing villain 12 and I'm averaging about 150Mb free. Please keep in mind that a2sd is automatically enabled.
Sadly my reason from switching from sensehero to villain has still persisted. It would seem that the phone does lag a bit when calls are coming in. It takes me about 3 seconds of ringing before I can actually answer a phone call. This is a little frusterating, I'm going to be experimenting more, and will keep you posted! Otherwise A2SD works amazingly. Everything is super fast once it gets running!

@mrfray, you're talking about ROM (free internal memory), djbasik is talking about RAM :)

I was getting the same error code as well. I finally got a RUU that worked. It was RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver (it was very similar to one that didn't work but this one has WWE in it.)

After getting the RUU to work the rest was a piece of cake.

Thanks to all for their help and posts. The additional posts to fix the *611 and adding 1 to the calls worked like a charm. (had to reboot twice to fix)

Thanks

good to know. for every ones future reference I have added those steps to the tutorial in order to fix the dialing issue.

thanks for the guide! i recently won a telus version htc hero and can't wait to toy around with it when it arrives. i've been mainly an iphone user for the past couple of years so this is all new to me.

someone in this thread mentioned that you don't actually need a micro sd card reader cause the phone itself will act as one?

is there a way to know whether my specific hero will be able to overclock to 710mhz'ish or is it more of a trial and error thing?

It's trial and error. But everybody seems to be able to get to 690/710, it's 740 where your phone may crash.

Does any one have any good advice for over clocking? the one experience I had with over clocking did not go well.

I had nothing but trouble. any good advice, perhaps a quick tutorial?

You know, I've always wanted to have a tutorial here :P I might write one :) Bear with me.

DJ, Your root guide was incredible comprehensive. I was able to successfully root an unlocked Telus Hero (I'm running it on AT&T in the US). Just a couple points:

- in step 40, the instructions state: "To note. You will now have your MicroSD card. Plugged into a separate SD card adapter and plugged into your computer. Separate from your phone. Your phone should not be plugged into your phone." Should be: "Your phone should not be plugged into your PC."
- I was unable to downgrade using the 1.76 RUU. After several attempts, I tried the 2.73.405.5 RUU available on xda - worked like a charm. Could've been issues with my hardware, but I don't know. Using the 1.76 RUU, I continually received an error message when flashing that stated I was using the wrong ROM utility.

Either way, great guide - excellent work! Thanks so much! :)

i'm on win 7 64-bit and i also had issue downgrading to 1.76 RUU (got error 140). i'm downloading 2.73.405.5 RUU now from here:

ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.co...WE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe

i will report back if it works.

EDIT: the file worked! i'm now on villainrom 12.0.0! woohoo!

I'd definitely love the overclocking tutorial!

It's halfway done :P I'll finish it after work :)

nice. for now i'm using overclock widget:
screen on:
min 245
max 691

screen off:
min 176
max 384

also replaced htc sense UI with launcher pro cause from what i've read, its supposed to be snappier. haven't noticed much of a difference though.

I'm stuck, would appreciate some input.

I'm running Windows 7 and I got HTC Sync to work so I booted up the RUU file, and when it's connecting, waiting for bootloader I think is what it says, I get error 171, usb connection. I check devices after I get the error, and it's showing as unknown Android 1.0. I can restart the phone, and everything is fine, HTC Sync recognizes it just fine.

I'm assuming it's something to do with Windows 7.

This sounds like a Windows 7 issue. I had to use Windows XP in order to get it to work properly. Some people report they are able to get it to work with 7 but they have to try different RUU's. I suggest you give XP a try if at all possible. XP is only necessary for the down grade. after that everything is pretty much done on the phone.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING AS ADMIN

great guide, i had to use a diffrent ruu file though 2.73.405.5 it kept erroring out but once i used that it was hassle free, now using the sensehero2.1 and absolutely loving it.

Thanks! Have you has any trouble with SenseHero 2.1? I am currently using it as well but any time there is supposed to be a Super User prompt the phone locks up and force quits the SU app.
