So your saying I would have to follow this guide entirely from start to finish over again to be able to get back to 1.5? Then id put VillianRom 12 on? Are there any major issues with it, will I receive OTA updates?

You dont have to start over again. Just do the root flash a custom rom and your done.

VillianRom is a great standard sense ROM. with no bugs.

I defiantly suggest Villian

Following the guide entirely will take you back to an old 1.5 ROM, then to Villain 12. (Following the entire guide is necessary because you'll need a goldcard to downgrade to 1.5).

Villain 12 is based on the official update, but with lots of improvements.

You won't receive any OTA updates anymore, but you'll already be running the latest firmware. (And lets face it, 2.1 is probably the last official update).

It depends what you're running at the moment. If you're on the official 2.1 at the moment then you can't just follow the last few parts of the guide. That's because the 2.1 firmware (and some of the newer versions of the 1.5 firmware) were patched to block the apps you need to use to switch to custom firmware.

So, you could either follow the guide in it's entirety, which would include downgrading to a 1.5 ROM where all the apps you need will work, or follow a guide like this one, that's designed for people on the official 2.1 firmware.

so ive followed the steps in the guide exactly however i had to downgrade to using RUU 2.73.405.5. now when i go to use FlashRec.apk. i made the backup and now there are 2 boxes showing restore backup image and download recovery image but its greyed out. when i type /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img in the text box nothing happens. the download recovery image is still greyed out and there is no other boxes. i have verified that i do have the recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2 image located on the root of my sd card. can anyone help this is driving me crazy. i tried not typing the first / but still no luck. if it matters it is a telus htc hero originaly

Well, the first thing I notice is that you're using amon-ra.1.5.2. You should download 1.6.2 from here in stead, it's better.

Here's what I'd try.

Go to your sd card (via Astro) and delete the backed up image (backup-recovery.img or something like that) from the root of your SD card.
Place the amon ra recovery image on the root of the SD card and rename it to 'recovery.img' or something simple like that.
Go to flashrec:
Hit Backup and let it finish.
Type in '/sdcard/recovery.img' into the white box
Then chose restore backup.

That should work, fingers crossed. I remember having some trouble after I hit backup then exited flashrec before restoring. It wouldn't let me continue until I backed up and restored in one go, which is why I said to delete the backup.

so i did that and when i chose restore backup it says flashing complete real fast. not to sure if it really did anything. so when i try to boot up using home and power it shows a picture of my phone and a exclamation mark. i then need to pull the battery to reboot it??

yes once i pull the battery i can reboot normally into the os. its just if i try to boot using the power and home buttons it does this. do i still need to be using the goldcard at this stage or does it matter. i used it to downgrade. im still unsure if my flashrec is working properly. when using flashrec i never get any button that says flash recovery image. after i choose make backup that button then changes to say restore backup image which i can press without typing anything in the text box and it will say flash complete. can anyone verify that when using flashrec 1.1.3 that when you type the recovery in the text box that a new box/button appears that says exactly “Flash Recovery Image”
because ive never seen this yet. i think im just making a backup and then reflashing the backup again therefore not being able to get into recovery mode. i did try the proceedure again and still no luck. could i have not downgraded far enough?

Does anyone know if/when Telus plans to go ahead with the 2.1 update? How are they for support if you rom your phone? I just bought a hero 2 weeks ago and I'm kinda pissed they released the Desire with no release date and priced it basicly the same as the hero.

The age of my phone should make no difference if I try to rom since you need to downgrade anyway right?

I doubt that they will be updating at all. they would rather you buy the newer phones than upgrade a perfectly working one you already have. then they can contract you up the a#$ again too

sorry i should have been more clear i did try what you suggested first by renaming the recovery.img and typing that into the box then restoring but it still boots up with that cell phone picture with the exclemation mark. do i need to be using the gold card still at this point cause i may have formatted after downgrading. any other ideas as to what could be wrong. thx alot

No, you've successfully downgraded so the goldcard isn't needed any more.

Hmm, maybe you should try the ROM Manager thingy from the market. It can also flash a recovery menu.

Just search for 'ROM Manager' and it's the first one by ClockworkMod. The very first option is to flash the clockworldmod recovery menu. Maybe that will work in stead?

rom manger worked like a charm. running villian 12 now. thx so much xyro that was driving me bonkers. set all my apn settings and rebooted now its just freezing at the villian boot screen

Make sure the apn for your network is set up, and that you dont have any apps (like juicedefender or toggle widgets) that have disabled mobile internet.

i reinstalled it now its working fine. cant seem to get my internet running anymore only wifi

after setting your APN's it can take a few reboots to start working correctly. the first time i did it it didnt take a reboot at all. the next time i did it took 2 reboots.
