Root tether - cringe again

I apologize upfront for any cringing I have caused.
I read the other tether posts but didn't do a lot.
recently rooted gingerbread, running wireless tether 2.07, defaults, doesn't start, log has 'starting access-point..' -failed and 'activating wifi interface...' -failed. there is some way to access the full log message, instead of the one the ends with .....? thats not very helpful.
read up on this wugfresh GB tether patch and unpatch from another post, any first hand info if that has worked for somebody else with gingerbread?
any other tethers out there that other folks have used with success? I would also be fine with a usb.
or just keep downloading, try it, if no good uninstall, get next one?

Can you verify that SU has access to the tether app? It seems like root access is needed for at least for putting the wireless interface up.

ok, so just to try, I installed open garden and it works, its slow compared to even 3g but its a tether! I went to ocnbrze link and downloaded their latest version, thats by google themselves right?, copied it to my phone, but embarrassed to say I don't know how to install? would like to try that to see if the googlers do it better.
its a little off topic but I've noticed twice now, different apps have the same settings, open garden and wireless tether, also astro and file manager. does android provide o/s level functions that can easily be bundled into apps? the type of functionality that say any tether or file manager would want? so if i write an app, a lot of the app is tapping into these droid functions and package them up in a wrapper or user gui and voila, there's another droid app?

with most apk's all you need to do is use a file manager app to install it. i would recommend root explorer (it is a paid app, a must for rooted phones IMO) or es file manager.
1.download and move the apk to the card someplace.
2.navigate with one of those apps to the card and find your file
3.select it and select install.
4.you should be good to go.
