Root Tether question.

Hey guys :D

I'm asking here because every other section I am active in takes days upon days to get a response, if at all. Remember how lucky you guys are when you want to complain.

Anyways. Many of you know that I am on Straight Talk. My question about tethering is, If I was to tether a Tablet off of my phone, the data usage would be the same if I use the tablet just like I use the phone? I'm talking about normal usage, no streaming, videos, music, etc.... Basically nothing would be different right, browsing the net while tethering on a tablet will use the same amount of data as if I was doing it on the phone right?

Now obviously If I were to stream on the Tablet the data usage would go up. But being that ST is so strict on their usage and streaming, I just want to understand before I go through the steps of tethering on a tablet.

Thanks guys

When you tether you are basically just using your phones internet connection on another device. So whatever you do on that device eg browsing, streaming etc is the same as using the data on your phone. Hope that made sense.

Anne is partially right. You're actually using more data when you tether. Your phone is sending data to your tablet while your tablet also sends back info to your phone to send it more data so that it can use the net. If the Esteem was something close to a router then it would just be a one way thing but it's not.

Yeah thanks I'd forgotten about that bit. I rarely tether I use WiFi hotspot mostly on an unlimited data plan. Our UK carriers aren't anywhere near as restrictive about that as elsewhere. :)

Don't quote me because I haven't tried, but I heard the PDAnet app works in a way that metro cannot tell whether or not you are tethering.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Whether or not MORE data was used than normal when using the tablet for normal web browsing etc.....

NOW, any idea of how much EXTRA it would use? Say for every normal 1MB of data would equal 1.5MB of tethered data. Or something like that? Or is it not enough to really make a difference?

Awesome info thanks so much.

I'm no tethering guru or none of that, but wouldn't it say how much has been used? :o

It would If I had a tablet to tether with from which I could then see the actual data usage ;)

I don't NEED a tablet per say but damn I want one and I'm just gathering info before I pull the trigger. I would only use it at home on the couch and I have wifi at home so it doesn't really matter but it's something Ive always wondered about. ;)

if you were to employ a packet sniffer such as wireshark you will notice there is much traffic even when not on the web. this applies for all connected devices i know of

Whatever apps running as a service in your phone will check for updates depending on the interval set by the developer, unless there is a setting in that app.

If you don't want metro to know what you are doing tethering or not use Orbot. It's like using a VPN since the data becomes encrypted through relays. Only thing is you should find a fast reliable relay to connect to, which there are sites that provide this information.

Btw i may have missed it but are you on unlimited or a capped plan?

Edit: btw you can use Onavo to track data usage.

FoxFi on your phone, PDAnet tablet on your tablet. Using on my esteem tethering to an Asus tf300t, everything works over bluetooth but downloading files.
