Help Tether?

Hi I currently have a crackberry and tether with Virgin Mobile and saw some threads that you can't with the Optimus V? Is this true? I use it for work, not excessively, but I am thinking of returning the OV since I haven't yet opened the box.

Many thanks!

I tether with my V all the time.
Wired tether with PdaNet
Wireless Tether (Hotspot)with Extended Controls.

So yeah the V supports tethering.
My OS is 2.2.1 stock.

I heard the newer phones are shipping with 2.2.2 and no longer support wireless tethering.

The Optimus V 2.2.1 may "support" tethering, but Virgin Mobile does not. That is why it was blocked with 2.2.2. It is against your TOS to tether. If you need tethering you will need a mifi with a Broadband2go account.

Virgin Mobile TOS said:
Specific Terms and Restrictions regarding Data Services

If your plan includes data services, such services are provided solely for purposes of web browsing, messaging, and similar activities. You are responsible for all data activity from and to your mobile phone or device regardless of who initiates the activity. You may not use the data service: (1) with server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing or other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions; (2) as a substitute or backup for private lines or frame relay connections; (3) with "auto-responders", "cancel-bots", or similar automated or manual routines which generate excessive amounts of traffic, or which disrupt user groups or email use by others; (4) for tethering your mobile phone to a personal computer or other hardware; for an activity that connects any device to personal computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for the purpose of transmitting wireless data over the network (unless customer is using a plan designated for such usage), (5) to send "spam" or unsolicited commercial or bulk email (or activities that have the effect of facilitating unsolicited commercial email or unsolicited bulk email); or (6) for any activity that adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use either our wireless services or other parties' Internet-based resources. If you want it, you have to pay for it. Getting it any other way is theft of services.

Yes, well, for clarification, on a technical side, wired tethering will always theoretically work with the Optimus V, and built-in wifi tethering will work theoretically with an Optimus V that is older and still is running 2.2.1.

OF COURSE I can't advocate doing such things. >_> <_< >_>

Spoken like a true politician

but on a serious note, there is a useful app called quick settings in the market that not only lets you easily turn things on and off, but enables wifi hotspot. Keep in mind, I only tether when there is no wifi available and I need to do something. I don't make it a habit to constantly do this. Just when I need to. As long as you don't abuse it, I see no harm.

How is that anywhere close to the same thing? I'm already paying for the data. shesh. If they would actually offer this as an extra thing to pay for, they can go ahead. I would. There is a difference. If your sitting there trying to play ps3 online or use the tethering to download huge files and stuff, then its a problem. Your using it in a way it was not intended for. Browsing webpages? That's what your phone already does. So how is enabling something else to do it through your phone any different? Yes, there are ways people can abuse it, but I do not. I'm not saying because they don't offer the service to enable hotspot, I'm going to hack the phone to make it do that. I downloaded an app. I'm using the data I already would be using that I am paying for anyway. It does not matter.

Also, if everyone followed TOS, then no one would be allowed to use your phone.

...Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections...

Your telling me no one has done this?

And if I was abusing my data rights, it clearly states they would cancel my account. I understand that. So I am obviously am not abusing my data.

I hear what your saying. If its against forum rules to say stuff like this, I'll respect it. But that's my opinion.

Also, wouldn't rooting be against tos?

The government ruled as long as rooting or jailbreaking doesn't alter your service then it is legal.

And you are paying for the data on the phone, not as a hotspot. They do offer the service with broadband2go.

We can both agree thank God for that!
