Help tethering for the zmax?

To usb tether turn on airplane mode then select usb tethering... it should work now. Now turn airplane mode back off. Don't forget you must be plugged in the computer first or you won't be able to select usb tether.

And I still get a redirect to the TMob Upsell site...

Running KK 4.4.4 on a ZTE Zmax on WXP SP3

You must use a user agent string switcher for your browser on the PC end.

Download google chrome if you don't already have it and download user agent switcher for chrome and change the user agent string to something like ubuntu chrome or Linux chrome something like that I don't remember as I'm already on Linux.

DL'd the User Agent Switcher from Google, but need to know what to enter in the Custom String field.

Try out fiddler2. It'll work not just for a single browser but rather all programs on your PC that access the internet.

Tried Fiddler 2 as well, still no go and I get redirected to the TMob upsell site despite setting the Custom Value to 0 or None.

Edit: Got it partially working, but many web sites just display a blank page/fail to resolve.

Try some of the other user agents on the list and you may get better results.

Freakin' waste of time. If I ever need to Tether, I'll just pay the $5.00 monthly charge instead of wasting anymore of my time chasing ghosts and rumors.

I have found the xbin path if that helps any. It seems to be virtual. I would agree that if my calculations ate correct, the rooting program itself will need to bring the root to localized sdhc.

Review the post in zmax section under tips.

I don't have a zmax but I've been checking frequently and there isn't any way to root or unlock it yet. Since none of the preexisting root methods work a dev will have to make a new root method tailored specifically to the zmax.

Actually they changed that. I guess they realized that not allowing people to get hotspot on unlimited plan was costing them money. Now you can get the hotspot addon with the unlimited plan and when you use up the 2.5GB you can buy another 2.5GB for another $5. You can keep buying more tethering data as much as you want, although this gets very expensive very quickly

I have been tethering the day i bought my Zmax. I only have it working for Windows using Chrome.

First!! Enter the APN settings and copy down the default Metro settings, Then add a new APN and copy everything from the default settings into it..

but in "APN Type".. make sure you add dun into it so it reads "default, supl, mms, hipri, dun"
(APN may look different on T-Mobile. just be sure to add dun!)
then hit save and use that APN

Go into your Hotspot settings and Configure it to what you'd like. Then, turn on the hotspot through the dropdown ui and it should turn on.
Then download this User Agent extension .
Enter the settings for the UA changer and add this custom UA string,
"
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9) AppleWebKit/537.71 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Safari/537.71
"
hit save and use it.
tell me your results!

If this works for you guys as well, i might just make us a Tethering guide :thumbsupdroid:

Friggin worked!!! Awesome and thanks much!!!

Has anyone been using this phone for wifi tethering. I used to use foxfi on another phone but it stopped working when metro made some changes. Any tethering apps working for the zte zmax?

Yes. From phone go to Play store.. search "clockworkmod" then choose and download the app called Tether its by clockworkmod. It will also require you to download something to your laptop/pc. It has worked perfectly for me. It lets you tether only a certain amount of data unless you upgrade to the paid version, which is only a few bucks and highly worth it. Been using unlimited tether for several months thru this app.

In addition, on laptop I use the User Agent Switcher extension in Chrome. I added a custom user agent string that matches what the User Agent String is in my Chome app on my phone. You can find out what it is by opening CHrome Browser in phone, then searching the phrase "what's my user agent" and you'll find it in results. You'll need to type the exact user agent string into your Laptop/PC Chrome Browser extention User Agent STring by making your own custom user agent string. In the extensions settings, you can choose to always use the last user agent string, so it will always automatically open the browser on your Laptop/PC with that custom user agent string. Hope it helps.

This was the missing link!

I added a T-Mobile APN in addition to my MPCS APN and adding the "default, supl, mms, hipri, dun" string along with entering the "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9) AppleWebKit/537.71 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Safari/537.71" string in my User Agent app on Chrome and finally, success.

Thanks for adding the extra piece of info I needed, which was the "default, supl, mms, hipri, dun" string in the TMob APN that I added.

I can now use GC without an Internet connection on my PC although I will probably just use it during those times when Internet goes down as I don't want to raise any suspicions by using a ton of Data, but it's good info to have.

Thanks again. No wonder I couldn't get it working -- my APN wasn't properly configured.

Also getting 20 MBPS DL speeds although I've gotten over 60 MBPS on my Zmax, depending on location.

Thanks!

One more thing, I have to set "Connect to PC" as "Charge Only" with the "Enable USB debugging" box ticked in order to connect.

I'm still lost, I am still getting unfortunately, settings has stopped. Help me please.

Enable "Airplane Mode" before attempting to enable "Mobile Hotspot" & USB Tethering" (Make sure you are connected to your PC via USB Cable.)

Once those two are enabled, turn off "Airplane Mode" and those settings should "stick"

Using Google Chrome, add the User Agent and follow the instructions above.

It took me a while to figure it out, but it does work.

Hello, scouring the web I stumbled upon this page hoping to find a solution and noticed this was for the ZMAX but does anyone know if this will work for any device on MetroPCS? I'm using their S5 and would like to know if anyone else had success with this method on the S5, thanks!

Thanks for sharing this info. I got it to work changing the APN and using User Agen switcher. It also works using fiddle. I'm on Metro PCS. How do I access Netflix movies with this method? Im using Chrome on my laptop and I can only access mobile version of websites (full version if mobile not available) while tethering. I can access Netflix website, but when I try to play a movie, it does not play and transfers me to a page to download mobile app for which ever User Agent I have selected on Chrome. Is there a way around it so that I can watch Netflix movies while tethering?

Havnt tried on a PC lately or with this phone, but from previous experiences, I had issues with doing it on PC because of needing silverlight I think it's called which would be a IE user agent that I could never get to work. My experience and may be wrong. Just wanted to put it out there.

It no longer works but the trick with silverlight was to use a UA switcher that could switch it to IE7(the one I used with chrome could do this)

Metro no longer blocks tethering, they just throttle you once you hit a data limit so you no longer needs special apps or the UA switcher on metro.

How can we bypass this rediculous and unusable throttle once we've reached the 6gb hotspot limit?

Will the USB tethering options still work at full speed at that point?
