Tethering on Metro **GSM**? Tell us HOW you're doing it

i am not rooted and i have been using foxfi-pdanet for 2 months now with no problems what-so-ever! i no nothin about computers or how to get my phone to do what i want, but this app works great for me everytime....

That's because your phone is CDMA.

Read the thread title.

We already know CDMA tethering works on Metro, this topic is about the new GSM phones.

I found a work around...

I just signed up for a VPN service. I turned on the 4g hotspot in my phone through the settings menu, connected my laptop to it, then connected my laptop to the VPN. Voila. Wifi hotspot on an unlimited plan

Edit: I'm using an Optimus F3 by the way

thanks for your post.
are you rooted?
are you using a tethering app?

I can also confirm that the VPN method works on the Nokia Lumia 521... for anyone who wants to take a dip into the dark nether regions of Windows Phone 8.

Oh and just as a related side-note, IF you are willing to install DD-WRT on your home router you can set it up as a VPN server. Meaning, you can save yourself the cost of a VPN service. That is, of course, unless you signed up for a free VPN server, but in my experience those are sooo slow. Which one did you use?

I have VPN service through PrivateInternetAccess. I've recently installed DD-WRT on my router so using OpenVPN may be an option. I'm paid up for a year with PIA though, so I may as well keep using that.

You got tethering working on windows phone 8? Hook me bro :D

All I had to do was turn on internet sharing, try to connect to my VPN service on my laptop, then connect the laptop to the Nokia 521 hotpsot. When I connect though it will pull up the Hotspot page that says I need a tethering plan. After a minute or so, the VPN will connect and I can then surf without any issues.

Speaking of the Hotspot page, it's recently changed:

For some reason when I click on the internet sharing, a pop up shows up displaying that it needs internet sharing plan. That's what yours said to right before it went to the website you showed?

Since I am using a gsm phone now, the way I tether is the same as before, change the url string on chrome to googlebot or Ie 8 or 9, it still works but my phone is rooted (motorola Atrix HD)

I'm not sure, but I think that popped up the first time too. I just continued on. Sometimes it takes a few tries to connect or I need to restart my computer or phone, but it'll work.

It shows me this when I click on internet sharing and if I continue, it shows me the other 2 pages.

I tether to a Linux machine running Chrome to my Nexus4 running CM10. From what I can tell MetroPCS/T-Mobile can't tell the difference between Linux and Android. I've already used 2GBs tethering at full speed. No issues.

Any luck with twthering to a game system like 360 it seems cdma metro blocked the data on it so it allows me to sign in but not play games like i use to..would using a vpn allow it to work?

I'm successfully on a rooted gsm Vitria on metro and have the 60$ unlimited and I'm tethering flawlessly. It's so great it's faster than most wifi. I've tethered over 35gigs and still blazing fast. It is possibly and very well worth it. The only downside is I can't use Google Chrome while surfing. Safari works, but when I use Chrome I'm promoted to a metro pcs page telling me to pay. I use safari with no problems
