Tethering..resolved?

i need tethering max 10 times a month for 7 hours each time. Last time (monday the 11th) i used 50 mb. So i still will be well under.

Sucks that when the trial will expire, most of the websites wont be accessible

No. The iPod Touch only has wifi to connect to the internet. If you have wifi set up where the Touch can connect why would you need PDA Net to connect to the internet? Why not just jump on the original wifi? PDA Net is for tethering computers with cell phones that can then act like a modem for the computer.
 
A good friend of mine is a Verizon employee. He told me that since they don't officially offer tethering for the droid that there is no 5gb cap or any extra data/tethering charges from Verizon. How can they charge you for something that they don't offer?:D He uses it on his Eris a lot, way more than i do on my droid, and he hasn't had any problems.
 
Ok been using tethering for a week or so, but does anyone know about speeds? I have a verizon usb modem that clocks avg. 2.0mps and my phone on tether only about .6 avg. same location same hardware, also when I log in pdanet it says connected @2.4mps???
strange I would think it should get same as usb modem since both are evdo rev a.

just my 2cents.

I agree with most of this.
I don't think there is a way for Verizon to know you are tethering if you use PDANET. They have no way of tracking it if you aren't using VZ access manager, as far as they can see you are just surfing on the phone browser.

Just my thoughts...

This does work awsome!!! Very fast.
 
so wait a sec, are we talking about limit on using your Eris as a tethered modem? or limit on your data coverage? got me confused now as people are talking about the bit torrent client app and also tethering....there is a 5gb limit on tethered but no limit what so ever on actual usage ie u could download 100GB's of data through the actual phone using torrents and such and will incur no extra charges.
 
I just streamed NetFlix last night, but I bought PDAnet full. Many sites like these use https to log in, so the free version of PDANet won't work with that forever.

Use Proxoid. It'll work better. Still free. Just set up a proxy.
 
I checked hulu and it wasn't https even after I logged in - so I can work with that for now. Until I have a spare $30, but I don't think I will use it THAT much to make a use of it.

I'm taking a shot in the dark here with what little I know about tethering.

VZW DOES keep tabs on tethering, but only using a certain program or setting or something. Either way, the Eris DOES NOT have this thing enabled so VZW can't even know if we're tethering or not. Supposedly, this is going to be fixed soon, so we have this grace period to go crazy with it. After this grace period, we either get 5GB of tethering bandwidth for free, or tethering at all gets you charged X-amount of dollars.

Someone should be able to confirm what I said. I'm pretty sure that's how it works as of right now.
 
Just set it up on my wife's laptop. Works like a charm! This will be great on our upcoming road trip.
 
PDANet is an excellent application to Tether your phone to your Laptop and use it for internet with very little limitations. The paid version of PDANet really isn't needed for much. I use PDANet for my posting (Tethering right now with PDANet now) and Facebooking, as well as just surfing the net. I have had no problems at the moment, no crashes or bugs that I have noticed.

The PDANet does offer an application for the iPhone, and the app uses either Tethered with a USB or Bluetooth (Android 2.0 only works with Bluetooth). So a question earlier about Tethering the iPod Touch could be possible if the application offers the Bluetooth to connect to your laptop or a Bluetooth capable device.

For those users who may be a little afraid to use PDANet on their Android device, I recommend using either..

3G Watchdog which tracks your 3G Mobile Internet usage. It can even be customized to track your usage from the start of your Bill date. It will track your Quota, Today, Week and Month. (I use this one)

or

NetCounter which tracks your TOTAL, Monthly, 7 Days and Today usage for Cell Towers or Wi-Fi.

But to note for everyone on here, it is safe to use PDANet to tether. So don't worry yourselves. Download it and use it a little at a time if you choose and keep track of your usage.
 
FYI
I was up at my cottage and we watched nbc.com and hulu for 4-5 hours with no problem.
About a week later I logged into my verizon and looked at my data usage and it was about 400mb and that was not just from tethering.

PDAnet works great, and there is nothing to worry about.
Bottom line on "my verizon" online under my plan states my data plan is UNLIMITED.
so screw them if they think they can charge me anything other than my monthly bill.
There isn't a court in the land thats going to say unlimited means anything other than UNLIMITED.....:):).

They get enough money from us...:)
