Tethering the Otimus M

If you Root your Otimus M you can download the app: android-wifi-tether.

it will turn your phone into a wifi hotspot and alow other devices to connect to it and use your MetroPCS internet. So you could let your laptop connect to the phone via wifi and surf the net.

You wont get super fast speeds, but it works. I just tested it out with my iPad and was able to easily connect and browse the web.

oh just curious (im a noob) how dangerous is rooting, as in how likely is it for me to brick my phone?

ive done everything on here and it all works and is easy. to roort get z4root on market. these guys know what they are doing. check out the other forums on other sites as well.
 
Ok but what about updates on a rooted phone? cuz wouldnt u still recieve them cuz all ur doing is changing your permissions?
 
hey im a real newbe im about to get the optimus m for metro and what is root please explain... ive been using the samsung code witch is way more expensive than the optimus and cant do as much as the optimus m even with windows mobile. i figured when i got this phone i could tether but u have to use blue tooth to tether and i still havent figured it out.. so do explaine what i have to do when i buy this optimus m... thanks.

download and install z4root and "root" your phone. Basically rooting allows you to run software/hacks you normally couldn't.

Once rooted then go to the top of thist post and use barcode scanner from the android market to scan the bardcode and it will take you to either the market or the webpage for android-tether download it and enjoy wifi tether(also BT tether).


I used to use the Samsung Code before it got all wet, so I switched to the Optimus.
 
FYI: reboot after disabling tethering in order to get normal wifi working again properly. Not sure why, that app has a bug in it somewhere but it works.
 
About this u can always update a rooted phone... as long as u don't changes the ROM into a custom one u good to go. :)
 
I finally got it working right. For some reason if you mess with the password and switch it back it screws you. Best way to be safe is using access control. Program is real buggy


Has anyone been able to torrent anything? I can go on websites and download from them but I can't do any torrenting.

Works fine. Slow but steady. For some reason the wi-fi stops working on the phone and it has to be restarted in order to use wi-fi again.
 
ok i got the torrenting to work but only with a usb tether. the app above and barnacle wifi (which i like better) will not allow you to upload/dl.

now i only have to wait 2 weeks to see the 3rd season of the boondocks. the fastest connection im getting is 14 kB/s snail speed... oh well. it's free
 
Barnacle Wifi Tether is the one I'm using. Its the bomb. Available on the market. Rooted the Optimus M with z4root

HINT: Do not do the LG phone update program on comp. It will upgrade you to 2.2.1 and you wont be able to root. Luckily, if you do, Andyo70 made it possible for us to downgrade to 2.2
 
Well, I down loaded from the QR code above and it works; slow, but it works. Certainly not what I'm used to with my laptop (in fact I'm using it now).
