Help Text Messages Disappearing

Oh joy, glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem! Just when I was getting comfortable with the phone thinking about rooting and this happens lol. Anyways lesson learned and I'll be dl SMSBackup soon. Hopefully they'll fix this problem and no one else has this problem.

The phone has a limit on how many texts it can store, doesn't matter what settings you have selected. If you really want to save ALL of your text messages, you need to use an app that lets you export them to some form of external media.

I had the same problem with my phone, just randomly deleted every text message I had.

Does anyone know what the limit that can be stored is (as prior poster said, the phone has a limit and it does not matter what settings I have selectd)?

Is there a way to see the total number of texts on phone?

Thanks!

I saw someone mention that every time he got around 2000 they would delete, but I'm sure it had more to do with the memory the texts are taking up.

This happens a lot to people, dunno what causes it. but you can go onto the marketplace and look up Sms backup & restore app, it will save all your sms/mms into a file and you can restore them when ever you want. but if you haven't done this before I think you lost them for good.

This has happened to me twice, once in December and once in January... I thought that it was a setting that I had it on, but checked all my settings and it wasn't the cause. I am using the default message app, anyone have a fix yet??? This is SUPER annoying!!!

Just had all my texts disappear too. I use Handcent and have AVG Antivirus running too.

Bit of a shocker.

Need to look up the best way to back up messages, and will have a look for that app Apps2SD or whatever it may be called.

Looking forward to this being diagnosed...

Thanks for the recommendation, Mr Incredible - Just had the same WTF moment. No great works of lit lost but still a bit disconcerting.

I've never even "heard" of a person getting a virus on a phone..... why slow down your whole system for nothing?

I run it on my computer because there are others that get virus's, but for a phone is a tremendous taxing of the resources and introducing opportunity for corruption.

Just signed up to say im having the same problem on my UK Desire Z (running Android 2.2.1. )
Happened once before, and again today. there this morning, gone this afternoon. using standard HTC message app. really peed off. my Nokia N900 still has every sms on it for the last 14 months. why does android have a problem?

hope a fix is found, or at least some way of restoring them??

Interesting thing happened to me. Lost ALL my messages one day, exactly the same situation as everyone else in this thread.

After extensive searching on forums, I believed that they were gone for good, and just decided to get on with it.

Installed SMS Backup and also SMS Backup+, so that if it ever happened again, I would be prepared.

For days I was kicking myself for not having these running from the start, then one morning when I woke up and looked at my phone...... ALL my messages were back.

Was now very confused. Re-sync'd my backup software, and did a full backup. I now have a full backup of everything I lost. :):):):):):):)

Now... Today when I woke up.... they are ALL gone again.

I am confident that the problem is not that the messages have been wiped from the phone, but rather there is a bug preventing them from being read by the software. A corrupted file or database is my guess. Both incidents occurred when messages were either being sent or received. Today's incident, 2 SMS received from British Gas. Unread message counter was showing 2 messages, but no messages displayed. Once I rebooted my phone, I could then see the 2 new messages.

I hope my description of the issue helps someone find a fix for this bug. Everyone (Including HTC tech support) told me that a bug existed, and unfortunately my messages were gone for good. This is obviously not the case.

p.s. I plan to just leave my phone alone, and am kinda expecting the messages to suddenly re-appear in a week or 2.

i have had this problem several times. i just use sms backup/restore from the market to restore them. but it would be nice to have a real solution.

lost mine hmm...thursday night. like, 12ish am they all just dissapeared...i was in a thread, i backed out from it, saw my handcent messages screen and nothing was there..i was like, weird. backed out. ended app. went back in, still nothing.

Unfriggen believable - I knew I was going to be sorry I went to Verizon. I have had the phone exactly two months. With in the last hr I have lost all my txt messages (using default msg came w/ phone). HTC sense does not appear to be working, lost all my widgets, lost weather and current location. The phone is at 2.2. I was just sending receiving msgs 2 hrs ago. I turned off the phone and back on hoping all would be restored and noticed 'backup' running, I've never seen that, is there a back up of my phone settings at Versizon I could use to restore the phone? Now that I see all the previous posts I am disappointed the Verizon rep said he has never heard of this problem....must not read the android forums, looks like a regular problem. Anyone know of a way to get everything back, not sure I remember how I set it up in the first palce. I keep getting 'no weather data available'
