The 10 cities 4G is Active in...

In Charlotte also. Best speed download was 3.0, but most were 2 or so. Really, really disappointing. I am going to return and go back to my Epic with Sprint. Their Wimax regularly gets 4 to 8 down and 1.25 up.

colnago: with that said (a little off topic), is there an uncapped hack out yet or CAN there be one made? i have the Droid X currently and will get my Atrix today but i know with Liberty ROM and Fission ROM, there is an uncapped.zip out and proven to work with Verizon... ????

I don't know if there is anything that can be done on the phone side. With T-Mobile, you are either in an HSPA+ area with an HSPA+ phone, and you enjoy the speeds, or you are not. There are no separate plans, codes, etc. that allow or deny access.

FWIW, I was on T-Mobiles $10/mo "web2go" plan (similar to AT&T's MediaNet plan) with an unlocked phone, and was able to do 7.44Mbs. If AT&T tries to segment, or charge for their "4G" I think I'm going to finally drop them.

I'll be in Baltimore tonight, so I'll test the speed there then.
@Colnago the H could also stand for regular ole' HSDPA (without the +)

True...and, "Hello", from west of Baltimore. ;)

The problem is that just because it may be "active in a given city", you cannot expect there to be blanket coverage throughout the city limits, nor outlying areas. Best bet is to check near the stadiums, Inner Harbor, etc.

One block from Camden Yards I saw between .5 mbps and 2.3 mbps down and between .16 and .33 mbps up :/ I watched the "status" page under "about phone" the whole car ride in and the phone stated "hsdpa" rated at 3G the whole way.

@colnago are you from the Bal'mer area?

at&t could just have one tower up in the city and say that it's UP.
i remember reading a review of an lte (or wimax) speedtest and the reviewer stating that they were standing next to the only enabled "4g" tower in the city...at the time anyways.
so maybe the trick is to be in one of those 10 cities AND find the right tower...
;)

Also, I noticed an oddity with the speedtest app. When I was testing in B'more earlier, during tthr download test it would "go nuts" and a couple of times the needle flashed to the 5mbps mark and jump back way down, and usually on those tests the download speeds would be exceptionally low, like the .5 mbps. I would if the "present" but "not lit up" yet network is messing with the app somehow, like it isn't able to read the hspa+ speeds but sees it and gets confused. Because most of the times I got the lowest values it was second before or after a decent score.

As a network engineer, when testing circuits, I felt most confident using the website: Speakeasy - Speed Test

...and yeah, I'm just outside of B'More. As stated earlier, it really depends on "which tower" is fully "4G" enabled. But it would be truly "weak" if AT&T is only able to do 6Mbs on HSDPA+, per the release on the Amazon Atrix page.

I am the only one thinking about returning the phone with 30 days if the network speeds don't change? I love the phone, but this "4g" stuff just isn't right. I will go back to my N1. :(

i just bought a atrix yesterday. I live in los angeles. this internet is superrr fast and the speed of the phone itself is incredible. what a beast

The thing is, if you click on Baltimore on their map, they show pretty much blanket 4G coverage across the whole Baltimore City area.

I'm also in Baltimore. I'm in my office downtown right now, just ran speedtest.net a few times and my speeds are absolutely HORRID!

Best case: 270/93
Worst case: 44/63

of the 6 tests i've done today. Phone is showing H+ and 3 bars.

WHAT????

Degraded signal (3 bars) will result in slower connection speeds. Shouldn't be that low though...wow.

I know this guy :D

Contemplating one, about 2x as fast as my VZW droid x on hspa+

Biggest decision is that they are turning on real VZW 4G this year in my smaller town.

Yeah, I "was" debating one also, pre-extra tethering fees, and move to new job site where T-Mobile signal reigns supreme. Wound up with T-Mo Defy, arguably the Atrix's little brother, which runs on both AT&T and T-Mo's 3G band. Problem is if I go with Atrix, I'll lose my $10/mo. unlimited MediaNet Plan...will probably save for an E7, since I don't need (2) similar Android phones.

FWIW, I found it funny that I had a reason to post my VW pics in Atrix forum within the first week of release. :p

Oh, do explain!

I really like the form factor of the phone, but I also don't want to jump head first back into ATT's network.

Just too many bad things, like practically no throughput just to pull up my car rental info at the airport. It was faster to boot the laptop and use a vzw data card :D

Seems really fast here at the office but latency is very high (over 600ms). Just on the fence, and I'm addicted to technology where I gotta have it!!! lol

Yeah, from what I'm reading, the Atrix may have slightly poorer reception than other known good AT&T phones. That latency could be due to a few different things, esp. if you are using an "app". I'd hit:

Speakeasy - Speed Test

...before making any "rash" decisions. I feel you on needing to have the "new" thing. But right now, since the laptop dock is no-go for me, the extra processor is not a driving factor. I may just get it on my girl's upgrade (family plan) , since she's due, and happy with her E71. But again, I wouldn't be able to use it on "my" data (family plan).

hspa+ typically has high latencies.

I'm just angry that we were under tornado watch/warnings last night with 60mph sideways uber heavy rain, so I couldn't check out a xoom last night. :D

I need more tech!!! Nice Corrado!

BTW if we were on vortex, there would be 1 ATT employee and 5 of his cronies derailing the thread.

Meh...I'm normally under 250 testing to DC server from B'More area on speakeasy's site via T-Mo. Ideally, pings to frequented sites/servers via command prompt is what you want.

Thanks, but the Rado has seen better days.
