The 2.1 Speculation Thread

Looks good...hopefully we'll get Android 2.1 sooner than later. Part of me feels like we'll never get 2.1 because of Sprint...I hope I'm wrong.

I know Sprint said it's coming, but I'm a former Instinct user who got burned after the promised app store never came...

same here :( except were were burned by far more things than the supposed app store. there was a music update that was over 6 weeks late with zero communication, who knows how long that went because i gave up on the POS after hearing Hero was coming to sprint. ahhhh, i still laugh when looking back at the instinct vs iphone ads sprint ran. if any product qualifies for lawsuits due to failed promises its that paper weight.

Just got a tweet from sprint:
Sprint Android update ! Upgrades to 2.1 for Hero/Moment now expected early 2q10. Currently working through options for upgrades w/HTC and Samsung.
from CoTweet.

Looks like March is out.

No didn't really get deep into it she just mentioned it to me. Was trying to them to reflash a phone having issues with deleting scenes.

Certainly looks like fun, but will the Hero be able to handle it without much lag?

Same goes for 2.1. Good thing is there'll be plenty of custom ROM's out with 2.1 within a couple hours. It's going to be a heck of a lot of fun when it finally drops

I assume that's what HTC has been working on all this time (I hope); customizing 2.1 so it works well w/ Sense & the Hero.

HTC's been done with the update for quite some time from the reports on the Sprint community. Sprint was doing their testing, and apparently are done with everything except figuring out how to do the upgrade.

I sure as hell hope we're not stuck going to a repair center. Those poor Moment users got stuck with that pain in the ass process (still haven't taken my Mom's in to get it done lol)

This is great. HTC could choose to just let the Hero die and move on to bigger and better phones, too many people still love it. I think its probably the first "iconic" Android phone, meaning something that everyone from tech heads to casual users fell in love with. Google was hoping the N1 would get the same reaction but people just dont seem to love it. Cant wait for the update!

Two things. First, Sprint is really taking their time with this because once you go to 2.1, you cant go back to 1.5. So if they released a buggy version, people would flip and they would have big problems. Second, this is most likely not going to be an OTA update. It will be far too large a file size for that. I am sure you will have to make a trip to a Sprint store of some kind.

I dunno, what will it be, 150MB? How big was the MR we got not that long ago? It's entirely possible for them to do it OTA, and it would make the most sense at pleasing their customers. The Moment users were absolutely pissed that they had to find a service center.

I'm glad they're taking their time (if that's indeed the case), because I would much rather have a good version of something later, than a crappy version of something early.

i personally,

Happy to get updates on what is going on at HTC.
I am rooted and happy... will wait.. a few months to see what happens...

Better than what I have experienced with other makers and providers...

The so called UPDATE is for the OS by the way... SENSE is an HTC thingy and where and what makes you think that any increase in functionality belongs in the 2.1 update? I don't think any of the NEW Sense functions will be in the update, those will be reserved for future handsets. I mean come on now, what incentive would there be to get a new phone if they keep giving everything backwards???

This thread belongs with the 2.1 stuff... IMHO...
Although it seems an innocent question, it "IS" Speculative!!!

Honestly, I stopped caring around new years. I can still check my email, I can still read my rss feeds and look at the weather, among other things. I'm not going to pull my hair out over it.

The end all to this, for me at least, is letting me buy the phone and update it on my own. Like my computer. But who knows how far into the future it will be before something like that comes around.

I just laughed and shook my head when I seen the update. I knew there would be someone freaking out at the time frame presented when I logged in here.

Did you read the article? Now, assuming they're right, it means the Sense upgrade is coming to the Hero line of phones (that would include the Sprint Hero).

You're right, there's no proof that it will come with 2.1, but it would certainly make sense to package both in the same update.

Did you read the article?

Yes, it offers nothing... But to Quote it... "At HTC's press conference today, CEO Peter Chou committed to bringing the new sense features to their "Hero" line of devices". Ok, that doesn't say anything about new, old, etc. The HERO line can mean many things...

Quote too from that other site... "which we assume for state-siders means the Sprint Hero and Droid Eris. With any luck it'll also come with a shiny new version of Android to boot".

Assumptions and speculation, just more fuel for the raging fire of BULL... When we get it, it will be, whatever it might be, but until then, and when it comes, is what it is... Enough already... (with the speculations).

Personally, I like the news, but don't hang any hope on anything. What is great about all this is just one simple FACT that the Android platform and handsets are fast-forwarding, supercharging, kicking into high gear... innovation to this spectrum of electronics (smartphones) at an amazing pace. That's good for all of us.

Taken from the HTC Twitter page, this was posted about an hour ago:

"Droid Eris, Sprint Hero, AND HTC Hero in Europe/Asia...I can now tell you the Eclair with Sense will be offered to you all."

Only problem is, no date!! Oh well!

Sprint already said this morning "early Q2"...

I do believe we know this information already. It will be coming to us but we have no "set" date. First Half/First Quarter.......

It's all irrelative until we have a set date, or someone has recieved the update (Eclair with Sense - aka 2.1) and lets us all know.

We are all excited, yes...but we need to wait paitently :)

Do we still believe in Sprint and their promises?? I personally don't after all that happened with the Instinct.

I think this is different. HTC isn't going to let Sprint mess this up. HTC promised upgrades to Sense which is likely connected to 2.1. The instinct was pretty much forgotten by Samsung so Sprint had no one to answer to except for customers. There is also a chance that Sprint learned a lesson from the Instinct.
