The Factory Data Reset Option

I agree that the reset could have been included in the instructions as the final step (thus this thread ;)).

However, to play Devil's Advocate, the idea of Verizon services receiving an avalanche of activation calls was likely the issue that tipped the scales in deciding not to make the factory data reset mandatory.

I'm thinking that they knew word would get around and that it would be more expedient for them to allow the activations (as an integral portion of the reset procedure) on a "user needs" basis.

Good point. At any rate, I'm very pleased with how my Eris is working now!
 
I totally agree that a factory reset should be a part of the installation. After the upgrade, all of the HTC widgets (weather, Twitter) were missing from my Eris. I did the factory reset and everything reappeared. It took maybe 15-20 minutes to set the phone up, reinstall the apps, etc. Strange thing was my Yahoo e-mail account was still active on the phone after the reset...
 
Used the manual upgrade on Friday and have been having issues with my phone since then (weather app crashing, phone lag, internet issues, speed dials wouldn't save, etc...). Did the factory reset today, and the phone is behaving MUCH better. Thanks for posting the details on doing this!!!

I may be jumping the gun here, but here's an update on doing the "clear cache" option...

It seems that all around, things seem to be running just a little smoother... I notice particularly in Swype, the "random touchscreen" issues seem to have lessened a lot since I cleared the cache. Touch movements seem nice and smooth, and not staggered and erratic like before. I have no idea why this is, it just seems to be the case.

I'd definitely suggest that LV3 users try the cache clear, just to see the results. No adverse effects that I can see... so why not?

I believe the instructions are these, but I can't check right now:

1. Turn off the phone.
2. Hold down VOL DOWN and POWER. It will search for the files like PB00IMG.zip, etc..etc..
3. Scroll down to RECOVERY and press the POWER button. The phone will reboot with an exclamation point.
4. Press the HOME soft button and the POWER button at the same time, and you should be presented with a menu.
5. One of the options should be "clear cache". Click it.

Thenestor, is this a cache-only process? Meaning, does it leave all contacts, apps, settings, etc intact?

Reset helped my phone on v3 leak... now i need to do my wife's phone she received the OTA 2.1 on Sunday and she has had issues..
 
Hey guys, I've definitely never done anything like this before so if these questions seem ridiculous it's because I have no clue. I just did the OTA update and I'm thinking about a factory reset. That will give me a clean phone, running 2.1, with all the original htc and android apps that came preinstalled still on it?

I'd only have to redownload any apps I put on the phone myself, plus putting my backed up music, pictures, and videos back on?

All my contacts are in my gmail contacts list, so they should get hooked back up once I relink my google account right?

How long did it take you guys to reactivate the phone, sync it back up with google, etc?

Thanks for any help.
 
It took me at least an hour to get my applications all installed and everything set up again, but part of that was my fault.

A word of warning: if you are using AppBrain to keep track of your apps and thinking about using it to reinstall them after a factory reset, then do not do what I did. After the factory reset, phone activation, and google account login, the first thing that I did was install AppBrain from the market, gave it my Google account - and it promptly did a sync with my phone. Since I had none of my old apps again, it completely wiped them from AppBrain for my account. So, a lot of that hour was trying to remember exactly which apps I used and wanted reinstalled.
 
haha yeah, a word to the wise. If you use app brain, make a seperate folder and name it backup. Move all apps you want to reinstall to that folder, because once you resync with appbrain after a reset, it wipes out the default folder.
 
I sure wish there was an option to do batch installs of apps...this is taking forever!

Thanks for the tip, though, I've already noticed it behaving better.

Frisco - getting ready to do the reset to see if it changes the texting issue and the lagging - but i read in your post playing devil's advocate after I do the reset will I have to reactivate through verizon? Stupid question but gotta ask. Thanks
 
Yes. I had to reactivate with Verizon. You just do it over the air. Did the factory reset this morning after my OTA couple days ago. Phone is much better now. Everything is snappier. The only issue I am stil having is with Google contacts not syncing.
 
If I used MyBackUpPro, should I restore apps and data from that backup or reinstall everything fresh from the market after a factory reset?

Meaning? it's automatically done when i turn the phone back on? like when I have had to clear the cache of my gmail apps and log back in on the phone? Its my only phone so I need to know the timeline of how long it will take and then what actually is involved with reactivating. Thanks!
 
Factory reset seems to have fixed the things bugging me.

My advice, as far as backing up goes, would be to get Astro File Manager if you don't have it (which you should), and use the backup function, which moves all your apps to your sd card (which goes untouched during the factory reset).


Also, be sure to go to phone, menu to people, menu to import/export, and export all your contacts to your sd card as well. I recommend this b/c I personally found that even with Google sync, some of my contacts were not on the list. Exporting your entire phone contacts list guarantees you save everything.
 
I had to do factory reset on both my phone and hubby's after the 2.1 upgrade.. We both came from 1.5 and both phones last night started the silent call bug mess, which is why i did a factory reset on both phones. After that both seem to be working fine now. I'll post if both phones start acting up again......
