The Factory Data Reset Option

:)oh thanks you are the greatest, best news i've heard all week:)
this is my opinion.

I feel that a factory data reset should be performed as a last step in the installation process, following the finish of the ota installation process itself, and before any pesonal configuration is done.

I've seen numerous posts in every eris forum from users reporting resolution to various issues via resetting the device, from speed dial not functioning or even remembering inputted numbers and names, to strange browser behavior.

The factory data reset can be done in two ways, but i'll show the recommended method here:

- shut down your device.

- while holding down both the volume-down toggle and the send or "phone" button, press the power button.

- wait a moment, and a screen will come up: Read the print completely and follow directions, it'll walk you through the simple process.

If you've already performed a reset and your device still exhibits less than optimum behavior with bugs remaining, it could be that you've got an eris that needs replacing.

Many with buggy 1.5 stock devices see similar lack of stability in the new ota, which pretty much isolates the problem as the hardware itself.

i picked recovery, which is what I assumed I was supposed to hit. now I'm looking at a red exclamation triangle. I can't tell if it's doing anything or not.

edit: i ended up just taking the battery out and restarting. then doing the factory reset from the settings. i figured why bother screwing it up again. when I did it from pushing the buttons together when it was off, there was nothing that said factory reset. I guess I chose the wrong option.

Well, I backed up my info and did a factory reset, because I believe it's probably a good idea.

Now for some reason, it will not sync right with facebook. None of my contacts pictures are showing. Also, when I go into 'people', and go to the option that allows you to pick who you want to show, (google, facebook, phone, etc...) it shows my facebook contacts as being 0.

Anyone know how to get it to sync back properly? I went straight to the sync accounts setting and synced facebook, google, and the weather right from the beginning. But no luck.

The mail app wont let me use my Yahoo email after a factory reset even though I could before I did a factory reset.

Calling VZW tech support fixed my authentication problem.

Ditto. Had some authentication problems myself after factory resetting. The weird thing was that my phone worked fine for two days after the reset, and then the problem occurred. No big deal though, just call VZW and say authentication problem, as they appear to have an easy fix. btw, gvoice's email forwarding really saved by butt on this one, as no one was able to reach me on my number.

I went to Verizon to get a refurb due to trackball problems and signal issues. The rep there said I should do a factory reset at least once a week, which I think that's a little silly if you ask me.

I need to do the reset. If I export my contacts to the SD card, will their pictures be saved as well? I'd hate to lose all those. I don't use facebook so that auto option is not useable for me.

Ok I just failed.

#1 tip when setting up Yahoo email, turn off WiFi before you set it up!

Same problem, but turning off WiFi did nothing. Any suggestions short of another reset?

*edit
Problem solved, for whatever reason, once I logged into my account on my laptop and retried it on my phone it worked.

That has to be the single most dumbest thing I've ever heard comming from a Verizon rep. That even tops when one told me my wife's Devour should only last 4 hours on a charge without being used.

I did a 2.1 manual install only using astro on my eris, had all the issues of the not factory reseted phones (50% no signal was there, I STILL DONT KNOW WHAT IS THE SILENT CALL BUG, so I dont know if i had it, or still have it, please if someone can explain it to me..). Did a factory reset (reseted EVERYTHING except sd,even had to reactivate phone just to make sure I did it right...). Glad I did it... I backed up everything using mybackup pro, but wasnt 100% happy with the backed up data.

The thing that I hated the most to work with is the contacts synced with google (had to erased them for mybackup pro, no problem) and mybackup pro contacts they never came back 100% as the way i had them (i had quite a few linked to fb for sense), sooo i did wat frisco did, a "manual recovery of contacts", all back to normal but with 50% no signal still there, which i can fix with the airplane(but i dont think it fixes the battery drain from it), and maybe the no sound bug which I dont know wath is it yet...

My battery issue bothers me because is bigger than in 1.5 (I have taken measurements in trying to prevent it with all the info on how to save battery life), last thing I did for it was to turn off auto sync and just use the htc widget for it ( it seemed to help a little bit).

One thing you cant use that you already had on sd before the factory reset: your trimmed ringtones from the factory trimmer and the photos app may not recognize at first some of the videos aqquired by market apps (like videovox).

If i remember anything else I will notify... Please!!! Whats the symptome of the no sound bug?

no sound bug is the phone does not ring, and when you call the person back it will connect, but the person on the other end cant hear you, and you cant hear them. i have had the no ring issue, but never not had any sound on callback. im starting to wish i just rooted the phone and didnt install the leak, but oh well. live and learn lol i think the only was to fix to no sound issue is to turn the phone off then back on

When i got my refurb the verizon tech said he hadn't heard of the problem and then he contacted his htc rep and he hadn't either.....

I have had my refurb for 2 weeks and no silent bug... (knocking on wood)

I am missing something... I shut down the phone, then hit power while holding down the volume down and phone keys. I got to the screen of text that comes up. The only thing I see thats close to a facorty reset is "Recovery". I try that and it just goes to a picture of the phone with a red exclamation mark inside a red triangle. Just sits there. I eventually have to pull the battery. Or the last time I hit up volume, phone key, and power key. But that just booted the phone. No reset.

What am I missing? Having several issues I think a reset would help...

*** Edit ***
Nevermind... figured out its one of the other settings. Not sure what the OP meant about following the onscreen instructions. There were none. =) Figured it out tho. WOW is it ever better! My apps are all working now, and the phone dialer is soooo much more responsive!

So as of late (past 3 days) HTC sense has been force closing an abnormally high amount of times ( 5 or 6 times daily), anybody else had this problem before and a reset help?

I had to do this the other day. It seems to solve a lot of the problems I was having with my phone. I will probably do it every 6 months when I reinstall my desktop operating systems.

Is there a way to backup your text messages before you do a factory reset? I'm using the stock message app, and I'd rather not lose them all.
