The Galaxy Note 9 Rumor & Pre-Release Thread

Yeah... but I'm still holding out hope that Samsung is going to surprise everyone and seal the deal with a screen that can go up to 4K UHD resolution. I watched Star Wars 8 a couple of weeks ago in 4K with HDR and it was stunning - can you imagine all the VR applications that would take your breath away in 4K? No more screen door effect!

The one thing that I don't like about the Note 8 is the tall skinny screen. I prefer the proportions of my Note 3.

Why would anyone beside a woman put a phone in the back pocket (I have no idea why they do it)? You will sit on it and maybe break it.

Exactly my thought ;)

I think the post might just have been misphrased, but if they were trying to ask "why do women do this?" I have to say that I see people of all genders do this, and over the years have seen a number of male members report breaking phones that way, so can't see why gender is relevant to the question.

It can break if a woman (or man) puts it in their back pocket (and then sits on it). Why anyone would put a phone in their back pocket and then sit on it is beside me, but this is typically woman behavior from my unintentional observation.

For me, in-screen fingerprint scanning would be the ultimate. I have also heard rumors about fingerprint scanners placed like on the Samsung Galaxy 9, and at first, I thought that this would be preferred over the current location, but I have changed my mind on that. My Note 8 is about a month old now and shortly after I got it, my wife got a Galaxy 9. After using both, I feel that the current location is least problematic with the lenses farther away from the scanner. Getting that scanner on the front, in a completely different area from the scanner is the best solution.

This may be my last Note, if the device gets any bigger. For me, I feel that my Note 8 is already slightly too big and prefer the screen aspect ratio and slightly smaller length of my Note 3.

You'll be pleased to know then, Danny, that the Note9 (now rumored for a July announcement and August release) will have a bigger screen... but in a smaller device. The top and bottom bezels are expected to be nearly non-existent: so you may end up with a smaller phone that's almost all screen.

I also read this evening that Samsung is moving up the release schedules for the Note9 and Galaxy S10 (now due in February!) to make room for a THIRD major release in the Q3 timeframe, right around the holidays. This third annual release will be the Galaxy X: the foldable smartphone Samsung's been working on for years. The rumors right now, however, indicate a device I wouldn't own - a little 3.5" cube with an external screen, and folds open to reveal a 7" screen inside. I suppose that will be great for people who need a very small device for shirt pockets, etc. but a larger screen as desired; the Note already has a 6.4" screen, so it's not worth the money for me. Besides, I'd have to open the phone to scroll my emails. Who would want to do THAT on a 3.5" screen???

Thanks for the info. I won't get the Note 9 as I just got a Note 8. I got a really good long run out of the Note 3, my previous device, said the local Samsung rep. It is good that they are not increasing the device size, and hopefully, that will continue on in the devices further down the road, ones that I might buy.

Samsung is really smart in pushing development of devices without a bezel. My wife once had a Samsung Galaxy 2, along with me, which was my device before the Note 3. She was not a fan of that Galaxy and went to an Iphone 5S for a lot of years. When I just got my Note 8, she started shopping phones. Originally, she was going to get an Iphone X, but when she saw the amount of screen real estate she could get in a Samsung with a smaller phone. that was a BIG selling point that caused her to get a Samsung Galaxy 9, a device she now says that she LOVES. Other selling points over the Iphone were more ways to customize her phone and live widgets/apps.

Surely the X won't be a 3.5" cube - that would be the least ergonomic form factor imaginable, and certainly wouldn't fit any pocket. ;)

Even a square would be kinda awkward - too short to use as a phone when folded, for example.
 
look, is the dat blame phone rumored to have dual speakers?

the last great phone I had that had awesome STEREO sound was the htc MAX with the boomsound subwoofer

Well, other than a slightly higher screen-to-body ratio, it looks like Samsung is setting itself up for a very bad year. Note owners are among the most fiercely loyal consumers in the smartphone market - we love our Galaxy Notes and demand the best. But most of of us have the Note8... so a tiny, incremental update like this will not compel most of us to spend that kind of money:

Samsung may attract some of the die-hards who are holding on to the Note 3 or 4; and they will draw a few new customers in, as they always do. I just hope they don't expect to sell a lot of Note9 devices.

So, what could this mean? Have we truly hit a plateau of technology? Are they deliberately getting us upset, setting us up for a move to the Galaxy X? Is Samsung out of ideas?
 
It looks like I'll be sticking with Jeanette another year... which is great for my bank account, because I just bought a new Yamaha PSR-S975 and that knocked my tech account WAY down...

I'm not sure how DJ Koh will explain the pathetic sales figures for the S9/S9 Plus AND the Note9 to stockholders (like ME) - other than they ran out of ideas and so the whole design team took a year OFF and went on holiday to Thailand and Singapore. Maybe next year, guys!

Here's more suggesting that Samsung is effectively pushing the S9 and Note9 out the door out of annual obligation, and not because there's anything new to offer with either model:

This is a huge gamble for Samsung - yes, they want to withhold the most excitement and more features for their anniversary device, the Galaxy S10 early next year. But at what cost? Apple looks to be releasing three new devices this fall: including a smaller, more affordable model.

Samsung could lose a ton of market share with this move...
 
You get complacent, you don't own the market long. One would think Sammy would know that, with so many other manufacturers nipping at their heels. If any of them ever discover the formula for making a large-factor phone with a highly functional stylus, Samsung can hang it up.
 
BTW I'm surprisingly reconsidering passing over the Note9. It's now rumored to be RELEASED in July, with a much larger battery, Bixby 2.0 (of which I'm cautiously optimistic) and a few decent enhancements. Are any of you considering a move from the Note8 to the Note9?

Even though I have the Galaxy forever program from Sprint and a upgrade would be a minimal cost, I think I am going to pass. Just not enough to warrant the trouble and then I can save the upgrade for a Galaxy X or Note 10.
 
My tech fund would be replenished by next summer, so I could conceivably jump on both the 9 and 10. The price would be offset by selling my spare phone (my current spare, in case the primary craps out, is my Motorola X Pure Edition). We'll see what the Note9 holds in store for us in just two months. Wouldn't it be a kick if Samsung had deliberately leaked a bunch of fake information to throw everyone off: and then they release this WOW phone? I don't expect that will happen THIS year, but the Galaxy S10 and Note10 would be the perfect opportunity for them to pull that stunt...
