Root The HTC One M8 Root Thread

Sooooo......

Turns out all my data problems were because Sprint is turning on LTE..... :)

I shoulda checked with Sprint first? :hmmmm2:

That's usually the last thing I try..... :D

My reception went to nothing at work.

Tried my own reset, no soap.

Switched from CDMA/LTE to CDMA. Worked. Went out and looked around - saw their contractors truck.

Drove two miles away - problem solved. :D

By the way, if you do the reset you get a scary message about it wiping out the numbers that you can tell at a glance are how you connect.

No worries, that's what it does.

Then it reboots, automatically goes into hands free activation, and you're golden.

Sorry I forgot to mention that. :o

And if you do something dumb like, oh, for example say... cancel the hands free activation or something like that.....
It borks your calls until you do it again and let the handsfree run.

Not that I did that. Surely not. My "friend" did it. :D

P.S. it definitely was not me. :D

I dont have an sd card plugged into my phone and i didnt use miniadb_M8, so how do i apply the flash recovery, and where do i get the superuser zip file

the superuser file is linked in the first post( [2014.06.18] SuperSU v2.00 - xda-developers )

if youre using your own adb/fastboot folder youll just need to place your recovery image into that directory. youll then open the cmd window and change to it with cd c:\yourfoldername

alternately, you can shift/right click on your folder and chose "open command window here"

i cant seem to find my device when i to adb devices so the flash recovery isnt working

If you are in the booted os,make sure you have enabled USB debugging.

If you have the device in fastsboot mode, then adb will not work. You can only use fastboot commands in fastboot :)

so my fastboot screen says tampered and unlocked at the top but my root checker app still says i dont have root and im still unable to flash supersuser

When you're phone is plugged in and you are on the bootloader screen, does it say below all that "Fastboot USB"?

And if yes when it is like that, what happens when you go to your pc command window and enter -

fastboot reboot

Please describe what the phone does and if the pc command window has message after the rebooted command.

Please be patient, others have had similar issues - we will get you going. :)

i got it to install superuser through recovery but my root checker still says no

edit: i got another root checker and that one says yes

OK.

Go to your app drawer, SuperSU.

Swipe from right to left. You'll see which apps are granted root permission. Keep going and you get to the settings. You can turn it on or off.

Not all root utilities (or other apps) are perfect, or ready for KitKat, etc etc.

Trust the one that said you were rooted, uninstall the other.

I want to put Viper on mine hopefully tonight. Do I need to ensure I am S-Off?

What is this S-On / S-Off? I have not heard of it before. My phone is UK EE and I can only seem to find threads focusing on Sprint / Verizon or AT&T devices. Should I steer clear?

Your HTC bootloader - hboot - has encrypted signature security protection.

That remains even after you unlock the bootloader, it shows up on your hboot screen as S-ON.

If you turn that off, s-off, your rom installations and firmware updates are going to be a LOT easier.

It's not required, you can still do everything with s-on, but after your first complicated update cycle - and it will be complicated with s-on - you're definitely going to want the easy way.

ViperOneM8 is a universal installer so you'll be fine.

HTC/Dev Does this root solution also destroy warranty or is it supported by HTC? Sorry if this was answered elsewhere, I am overwhelmed with all this information.

Using HTCdev.com is HTC's solution for those wanting to unlock the bootloader - and it does void your warranty.

So if I want to put the phone back to stock for a possible future warranty claim don't do the HTCdev unlock? Also it might be a useful guide to put the phone back to stock, S-On and all that business so someone could file a claim if they need to. I didn't see one in the everything root FAQ or in this thread.

unfortunately, due to the complexity of write protections on new-fangled devices, htcdev unlock is a necessity for most phones, verizon devices being somewhat of an exception since they do not allow their branded htc devices to participate.

if you can achieve s off,you can get back to a stock looking device that does not show any visual traces of having been unlocked(unlocked devices will read relocked and be a tell-tale beating heart, unless you use some trickery).however, submitting your identifier token does provide htc with your name and account info and all sorts of personal device info(imie, esn, etc) so technically there is no way to gaurantee successful warranty repair of a modified device.

having said that, htc has been good about taking care of legitimate warranty claims for hardware issues. but again, there are no gaurantees,so wether or not to roll the dice is an individual decision :)

set up adb and prepair to root

-go to HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader and sign in to your account.chose "All Other Supported Models" from the box,and click the green "begin unlock bootloader" button underneath.

So I have my M8 and am getting tired of stock already. So I think I'm getting close to rooting this puppy. I do have one question before I continue however.

Can someone please explain why we should choose "All Other Supported Models" on HTC's Unlock Bootloader page and not our actual phone? I see it's listed and just don't understand why we wouldn't choose the correct option.

Also, I've been using Cyanogenmod on my other rooted devices. Anyone have feedback on that with this phone? Is there a ROM that might work better or is more highly recommended with this device?

First of all I noticed you have Verizon listed as your carrier. If your M8 is a Verizon phone you won't be able to unlock your bootloader via HTC Developers, you will have to use Sunshine here http://androidforums.com/one-m8-all-things-root/854630-new-s-off-method-released-sunshine.html

Sunshine will also give you S-off which you are going to need if you want to run most custom Roms.

You can get the CM Nightly here CyanogenMod Downloads

But many M8 users seem to like Viper HTC One M8 - Team Venom

Sorry about that, we just switched this past weekend to T-Mobile. I just haven't updated that yet here.

Oh, and I thought I had to do both. Through the HTC Dev site and Sunshine. No?

No, Sunshine will unlock your bootloader and give you s-off, no need to use HTC Developers. if you go the HTC Developers method you will have a unlocked bootloader but still be s-on and HTC will have a record of you unlocking and voiding your warranty.
A unlocked bootloader without s-off is virtually useless when it comes to running many of the Roms available for the M8.

Oh, I did not know that. So then the sequence of rooting would start with Sunshine then?
