The idiot test

How can you correct this equation without changing the numbers or position of them in the equation?

8+8=91
 
A man killed his wife in their car one night. He used a knife which he later threw into a very deep hole where no one could find it. He removed the wife's body from the car being very careful to leave no evidence of any kind behind. Once done, he headed home to crawl in bed for his alibi. A few hours later the police called and informed him something happened to his wife and he needs to go to the scene immediately. Of course, being the loving husband, he drove fast to get there and was even able to produce tears to show his grief. The police immediately arrested him. Why?

Yeppers. Took me almost 15 minutes to figure out cuz at first I kept getting hung up on the numbers in the question not adding up.
