The idiot test

There are ten people standing in a circle in the middle of a room. Everyone can see each other and everything in the room. Where would you place an apple so that everyone in the room can see it except one person?

Ollie and Sven went out on a hike. They had traveled several miles when it started to rain. They spotted an abandoned cabin and decided to hold up there. It rained for hours before it finally stopped. The boys went outside and decided they were hungry. They agreed to split up and go short distances to find something to eat. Ollie found an apple tree within minutes. He took a bite from the apple and immediately turned into a tree himself. Minutes later Sven came to the area where Ollie was and heard a voice from above that said "Your friend has become a tree. You can save him but you only get one try or he stays a tree forever. Touch the tree you think he has become. If you are right he will change back and if not he will be a part of our forest forever." Sven looked around for a few moments before deciding which tree to touch. He walked over to the tree of his choice, touched it, and Ollie re-appeared! How did Sven know which tree to touch?
 
An old and tired king who didn't have a wife or any heirs was trying to figure out how to make sure the kingdom would be ruled by someone good for the kingdom after he is gone. He decided to give a seed to each child in the kingdom and said whoever grew the most amazing plant would inherit the kingdom. 3 months later thousands of children showed up at the palace with many wondrous and beautiful plants. He examined each one. The last child in line only had a pot full of dirt and a sad look on his face. The king promptly said this child would inherit the kingdom.

Yessir

An old man wanting to give his money to someone smart enough to deserve it narrowed his choices to 3 people. He gave each of them a gold coin and told them to buy something that can fill an entire room. The first bought all the cotton the coin would buy but it wasn't enough to fill the room. The second bought all the straw the coin would buy. The third bought 2 things and the entire room was indeed filled. Any idea what they might have been?
