The Infamous Razr Camera Thread...

Ok peeps...

The Razr release is right here, and lots of people have already handled the phone and put it through some paces...One feature that'll be sure to get some attention is the camera, Sadly, I don't expect it to be good attention either.

Quoted from the phone arena review ...

However, it still has some difficulty in properly focusing when attempting to take shots. In the end, photos are good, but not great!

Ok fellow Forum peeps,,,What that says is that this is mainly the same camera as the Bionic, and while it is capable of taking decent shots sometimes, good luck at getting the phone to focus!

Yup, that damm Auto Focus bug that us Bionic owners have been dealing with since day one looks to be present on the Razr.

Now before some that handled the phone start voicing and screaming the shutter is fast...What i'm talking about is the time it takes to point the camera and the green box locks on (Auto Focus) and you take the shot clearly? The ability to just point and rattle off shots because the shutter is quick is useless if the auto focus is not locking on quick...

In essence ....Moto what the heck were you thinking?

Feel free to sound off with comments, and post your pics over time with some shots you've taken with your Razr...both good and bad!

In my opinion it's one review and one opinion... when all of the reviews start saying the same thing then I'll get worried.

Lol...come on brother, you know its a matter of time before it gets out that moto just basically repackaged the Bionic Camera and stuck it in the Razr...crappy auto focus and all!

Here we have the Razr, and its sexy and sleek, and built well right? However it has the same BS auto focus issue as the Bionic. That IMO is just not cool Motorola ....not cool at all!

And as a Bionic owner I can tell you that Motorola has done nothing at this point to fix the issue...

If a couple seconds is too long for you to wait you are not going to be happy. That one review was not my experience at all with the camera. I didn't shoot in the dark so I can't comment on that but the time it takes to lock focus is not a big deal at all. Its fast.

Go to a store and use it yourself you are assuming without even using it.

Um, seriously? There have been quite a few people from the forums who have gone to their local Verizon stores and demo'ed the RAZRs themselves. In almost every case, the camera is (i) faster than the Bionic, (ii) has better picture quality, and (iii) doesn't have the same auto-focus issues that the Bionic seems to have. So to state that the Bionic and RAZR cameras are the same is a bit short-sighted.

Even more telling is that there have only been a couple of reviews from notable sites that slammed the camera (The Verge comes to mind), and even then from my own review of the sample photos, I just don't see the so called evidence of the RAZR camera being "awful" - and seriously, who shoots photos in complete darkness?! (yes, one review actually had this as a use case in reviewing the RAZR camera, SMH)

With most reviews saying the camera is better than the Bionic, I'm struggling to see what the real beef is that people like yourself have with it. To be frank, if you're relying on a cellphone camera to capture significant shots (e.g., baby pics, etc.), you are woefully naive to think that having a great cellphone camera (i.e., iPhone 4S being the current champ) will negate the need for a LEGIT P&S or D/SLR camera. Any smartphone today is a marriage of functions that tries to achieve an appreciative balance among them, with some features being more fine tuned than others. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, it's still that - a balance of functions.

Nothing that I've seen regarding both my own use of the RAZR camera and sample review shots from more notable sites makes me think that Moto failed in providing a sufficient camera for the RAZR.

My only caveat is that reviews can only tell you so much - I'll wait for a month or so of real world use by every day folks before making my decision.

Sorry dude but it's still one review! We never know what the hidden agendas of the reviewers are so it's difficult to know if their review is accurate or biased.

What's odd is that it seems like lots of people this fall are getting frustrated early with these new phone releases. Over in the GNex forum it sounds like the natives are getting increasingly restless. I was half expecting to see evidence of tar and feathers this morning over the most recent delay in the products release. Technology is now advancing so quickly that the phone manufacturers (and Google) are having trouble keeping up.

Lmaooo....I haven't even been venturing into the GNex Forums lately..The natives are very restless, and angry at Vzw for basically putting such a pure Google experience on the back burner for the more Media Friendly Razr and Rezound.
Ohh well...that's business for ya!

Ok...let me say this! I understand what some of you are saying, I get it, I really do!

And to some degree there is truth in the fact that this is only Phone Arena saying this...who I must say, usually gives a pretty good review on all the units they review. Much better then Engadget and those Apple lovers over at Boy Genius...lol, sorry Jonathon but u guys are so on the Apple train its not even funny! Ok anyway back to the Razr's camera...

I'm a Bionic owner, and I have to say the biggest gripe to me and alot of other people as well is the Camera! Yes it can take decent shots...but its a giant crap shoot with the lame Auto Focus that takes a year to focus...put it this way, my almost 3 year old Blackberry 9700 took better pictures...seriously now! So if the same sort of issue is present on the Razr...it would be extremely suspect and ballsy of Motorola IMO.

I will leave it up to the masses this Friday to really make a decision, including myself who will of course be buying a Razr and be putting it through it paces.

Keep in mind I want the Razr to be a success...I wouldn't even entertain buying it at $649 if I didn't love everything it brings to the table...Super Thin, Gorilla Glass, Kevlar backing, SD Slot, Super Fast LTE, and yes I'd like a decent shooter on board that takes better pics then the Bionic.

We shall see...

Actually according to a link recently posted in that thread, the current delays may be caused by Samsung and Google... not Verizon.

Google and Samsung continue to bungle the Galaxy Nexus launch

Sean, I'm still on my OG Droid and couldn't be more anxious to upgrade. Heck, I've held out this long only because nothing that Verizon has put out to date has even been remotely compelling to purchase. That being said, I can only tell you that from my 30min or so of playing with the RAZR, most of which was spent on the camera, the auto-focus is a non-issue. It worked pretty quickly when I was using it and didn't have any discernible lag time. Most of the reviews seem to say the same, with the exception of a couple (which makes me wonder if it was user error than a device issue).

I'm still undecided in the RAZR vs., SGN debate, but if the camera is your bellwether, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the RAZR camera.

Thank you my man...appreciate the feedback!

I'm very much on the Fence between the both of them as well, and if the shooter is a go, I'm on the Razr side of things because of the build quality and materials used to make the Razr compared to the GNex's, as well as the ease of swapping out memory cards.

That write up on Phone Arena is crazy...but I must admit, its starting to look like a Google/ Samsung mishap ...Lol, what a dropped ball, they had Apple by the neck! They will most likely never get a chance like that to take a clear shot at the Death Star...

Well, if the camera is no better than the Bionic, I am tempted to go with the bionic. But my reasons are practical: buy the bionic WITHOUT a contract and be free to upgrade later on when the mood hits me, or upgrade to the razr (same price) and be locked into a contract for two years. I will say the Razr looks cool, and I could be happy with it for two years. The only problem is that approach is there are quite a few issues with the bionic. Maybe I was just lucky with the first bionic.

I agree that one should not use a cell phone camera as a primary camera. It's a phone, after all. But let's face it, that's the direction most of us are headed. So, if the camera is buggy, then it's tempting to settle for the bionic, with the camera FX app (which I already have but did not use on the bionic).

I played with it today in the store. Camera is a non-issue. It focuses fast, takes pictures fast and the quality is good. The camera on this phone focused fast, like within a 1/2 second fast....hit the screen, picture taken....just like that. Not sure what other people are talking about but I found no delay, lag, studder, nothing with the camera. I've had the OG Droid, Droid 2 and D2G and bionic...this is much, much better...Great phone, can't wait to get mine whenever Verizon decides to ship the pre-orders.....

Great to hear. I am feeling better now....

I went into the store today to check out the RAZR. I took several photos and the the camera was really snappy and quick in taking photos. Not as quick as the iPhone but "light years" faster than my Droid Incredible. Not sure what else to compare to, but for me, it seemed really quick and took good shots.

This review doesn't give a particularly good review on the camera, not to mention the display, it gives a pretty bad review on that:

Motorola Droid RAZR review | The Verge

I don't think it necessarily slammed the camera, but it wasn't too nice to it either.

I stopped reading when they compared the "terrible" Razr pentile screen to the excellent qHD LCD screen on the Bionic...

Clearly that reviewer would find fault with the Razr walking on water, probably bitch it got the bottom of the shoes wet. Whatever this jackhole thinks of the camera is irrelevant. There wasn't one positive comment!

I usually use reviews as indicators, and reserve the final decision to myself through testing, or through other users after a device has been out for a week or two.

Though I have seen quite a few reviews claiming negatives on display and camera, but none quite as negative as the verge.

Are they negative in general, or is the Razr getting singled out?
