The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

I have a small issue. My network is not working. I was able to get it when I had internet. Now that I dont have internet it seems not to work. I have static Ip addresses to the servers. Both running Samba and I have Samba Client installed.

That's one I'd not tried before!

While we're on the subject of cloud storage, what about Skydrive and Dropbox?
There are official Linux clients for Dropbox, I'm not sure about Skydrive. Since it's a MS product, we know how much MS hate competition, it may not be a client!

Tried ext4magic:

Code:
dngrsone@Dads ~/Downloads/ext4magic-0.3.1 $ ext4magic /dev/sda5 -a 1381960800
/dev/sda5 Error 13 while opening filesystem
ext4magic : EXIT_SUCCESS

This is ridiculous... I might as well just start from scratch.

I'm not very good with networking but Moody or someone else should be alone to offer more help.

What does, as root in a terminal, ifconfig -a show? Is it wireless or wired?

well im finally going to ask HERE since ubuntuforums is apparently less knowledgable than people here on the same operating system.

its a HP G7 Lubuntu 13.10:

Well its not a channel change problem I've discovered as my ubuntu (12.04) machine works fine in the same place, same with my android device.

This is exactly what happens:

-I boot the machine up
-it connects to the network for about a minute
-it all of a sudden seems to not find the network, even though the machine right next to it shows full strength along with previously showing full strength on my "problem" system.

Lshw -C network shows:

*-network
Description:wireless interface
Product: RT3290 wireless 802.11 1T/1R PCIe
Vendor: Ralink corp.
Physical I'd: 0
Bus info: PCI@0000:02:0.0
Logical name: WLAN0
Version: 00
Serial: f4:b7:e2:32:9
Width: 32 bits
Clock: 33mhz
Capabilities: bus_master cap_list Ethernet physical wireless
Configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rt2800pci driverversion~3.11.0-12-generic firmware=0.37 latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn
Recources: irq:53 memory:f0210000-f021ffff

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I had to take type it from my phone as well I'm or able to connect with the machine right now lol

Help would be fantastic
icon_sad.gif

also, it sees other networks in the area.

PLEASE do not debunk this as a network router problem as it is NOT the case. running windows 8, I had full strength, on my android device and my ubuntu system it shows full strength, its just my Lubuntu 13.10 system.

any and all suggestions would be of great help!!

thanks,
boyo

Did you see this?

already tried it. im using a dumb workaround... which requires android ( :P )

i have had easytether pro for a while (does not require root) and now im using my phone as my wifi adapter.. plus I can connect with my normal wireless if I need to instead of my WiFi..

It's a bit clunky, I dont particularly enjoy having my phone constantly connected to my laptop, but... whatever i spose lol.

*edit

i could do the update, but got all sorts of 404 errors on every link anywhere..

This and the other errors you've posted suggest that you don't have correct permission/access to the device. But beyond that, I really don't have any ideas.

Dammit...

Code:
dngrsone@Dads ~ $ sudo umount /dev/sda5
[sudo] password for dngrsone:
dngrsone@Dads ~ $ sudo ext4magic /dev/sda5 -a 1381960800
/dev/sda5 Error 2133571347 while opening filesystem
ext4magic : EXIT_SUCCESS
dngrsone@Dads ~ $
Nope.

... and to top things off for the night, I can't get into the networked 2TB drive where I keep all my backed-up data.

 :D I make fun of Ubuntu Forums quite a bit, even though I used to be very active there. But they're just so...ridiculous in certain ways. Trust me, there really ARE very knowledgeable people over there, but the overall problem is the tendency to A) chastise people as if they're four years old and clueless, B) veer off onto something not at all related to a clearly stated issue, and, C) tell the person that the non-related response really DOES have some correlation with the question they're asking (when it absolutely does NOT). Anyway...

its a HP G7 Lubuntu 13.10:
I have about 20 minutes experience with Lubuntu. I installed it while trying lightweight distros on my old laptop--but discarded it quickly. I know it connected to my wireless network, but that's all I can say about it. Have you tried logging in with something else? (Whatever's available to you--perhaps Ubuntu Fail Safe or whatever else is in your list of choices.) You can also try installing Xfce or LXDE (or KDE :D), and then see what happens when you log in with them. If the problem persists...well, let's leave that for later.

Well, I would have installed standard ubuntu, but like i said i didnt have a big enough cd. so now i have my own method, and it will have to do, as seemingly no other method has any desire to work lol.

*edit

and i totally agree 100% with your perspective of ubuntu forums. They close my threads when i have a new topic from the same problem (i.e. new altercations) and keep persisting that its my router, when now, i am connected to the internet with the problem pc with a tethered device using that same router.

PAH!

That's irrelevant. :) Now that you have Lubuntu installed, just use Synaptic (which you can install if it isn't there by default) to install Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or any of several other *buntus, as well as Xfce and LXDE.

Exactly.

You mean I can get standard ubuntu? How do I get synaptic???

Chrome runs as root i just had to hack the file again. and no, it shows properly until the 'whirly thing' goes away then flashes and after that it's all off the screen

Happens on the MacBook as well. apparently a Chrome and Firefox (and Safari) bug

It's OK on my Macbook, in Firefox and Safari. Only time I see it wide, is briefly when the pages are loading.

Maybe something from a third-party site is not connecting or loading properly, which is causing it to happen. AF does access and run scripts from quite a few third-party sites, like Facebook, Netshelter, Youtube, Twitter, Google Analytics, Google Plus, Feedburner and Google Ad Services. I've got all of these and more in the hosts file. One because I don't use them, and two they're often blocked or extremely slow, unless I'm using a VPN.

Myself, if I don't block irrelevant third-party sites like Facebook, many websites I'm interested in, like Engadget or BBC, fail to load properly and the whirly thing just keeps round and round, because social junk like FB, etc is non-responsive here. I don't use FB or Twitter anyway, don't even have an account.

Try using No-Script in the browser, see if some errant third-party Javascript is causing it. Do any other vBulletin based forums do it, or is only AF?

see right now it's looking normal. but wait until someone posts an image, then it goes all wide-screen on me and i can't read without side-to-side scrolling

Well thanks to moody speaking so highly of kubuntu, I decided to try and dual boot it with w7 and everything came out right. But like it's really late here, I'll play around with kubuntu a bit more tomorrow :D

I use the Dropbox Linux client, and while it certainly works (as in runs just fine), it definitely has its quirks. I posted a [typically long-winded :D] rundown on my DB adventures somewhere in this thread.

Perhaps I'll try to look for it some other time. Skydrive is the bigger one for me as it's where I've got the most free storage (25 GB) but there is no native Linux client.
