The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

I fixed it:

I edited the .desktop file again; there are two icon pointers-- Icon[en_US] and Icon

I had to give both items the same pointer, then erased the KDE cache files.

Well, I mean having a completely different thread related to Linux and Linux being the main Topic. Like this Topic is under Computers & IT.

Easy Tricks Portal: How to install Great Little Radio Player 1.4.5 on Various Linux distributions

I wish the Linux Thread was able to have it's own Topics. Is it possible? I believe alot of good topics get lost after awhile since everything linux is one thread!

I tend to think of this stickied thread as more of a discussion of Linux in general. But if someone does have a particular issue they wish to discuss, I don't see why it shouldn't have its own thread. In fact looking at the first page of C&IT, I see three Linux related threads, each one with it's own subject. Linus Torvalds should sue, Privacy and Ubuntu, and Ubuntu 13.10.

We don't have specific stickied threads for Apple or Microsoft. However there's F@H and Let's see your desktop, both stickied.

Well, if we overwhelm the forum with a bunch of Linux-related threads, then that might be an incentive for them to make a sub-forum specifically for Linux issues...

I can very easily create a thread with my own Minty issues.

Actually it seems to be more Microsoft and Windows related threads in the forum at the moment. But there's only one Apple related thread I can see. That's currently on the front page. Most of the other threads seem to be hardware, or discussions about particular softwares, like the GIMP or Photoshop.

I can very easily create a thread with my own Minty issues.

Do it IMO, especially if you think your Minty issues require ongoing discussion. :D

Thanks everyone...it gets my vote. Subforum was the word I couldn't think of when I brought it up!

we're going to make sure LINUX get respect. We're tired of being treated like Rodney Dangerfield!!!

I pitched the idea to Phases, he was interested - and now the holiday is upon us and then catching up from the holiday after that.

If we'd been a day or two earlier...

Anyway, I'll update you next week, if I don't, drop me a line and remind me.

Hope everyone has a safe and free and open Thanksgiving. :)

I downloaded and burned one Kubuntu DVD. Tried it, and it looked flat. I don't mean all the dratted visual effects and crap that Ubuntu wants, but it seemed all gray.
I have trouble with the command line. I know what it is as I used DOS, but the terminology of that got me, too. I had to memorize every command. Now it's like learning another foreign language.

Like I've said, there are really no tutorials. Most of the easy ones tell you how to get onto Facebook. I happen to want to hook up an Epson Scanner. The usual reply is go get a new scanner and get an HP. I don't want an HP. Takes you forever to find the answer that you can't use a printer since it isn't supported. I happen to like my Pixma -i6000. It works. It prints stuff that HP won't begin to touch. But it's at least 8 years old. This is what you can't find. I simply don't want an all-in-one. Who on earth faxes anymore? The scanner interface is simply designed for most to copy. My Epson will do slides at the resolution I want.

I might just mess around after Christmas. Right now I am too immersed in making gifts to want to sit there.

What do you know about Slimboat Browser? I have Iron and that. I think I am going to delete FX since I can't get ESR going.

Wasn't it exactly the same when you first learned DOS, and had to memorise everything like a foreign language? It is different, many commands are different, e.g. "ls" instead of "dir", etc. Might seem hard at first, gets easier with practise of course. Go into the command line on a Mac you'll find that very much the same as Linux, because Mac OS X is a Unix OS.

I'm very much used to it now, because I abandoned Windows earlier this year out of frustration, and just use Linux Mint laptops and a Macbook. :)

China!

Faxing is still a very common way of communicating and sending documents here. And I'm talking about the traditional method of faxing as well, i.e. with a fax machine and a telephone line. The local department store in my neighbourhood has a good range of fax machines, right next to the Android tablets and smart-phones. :D But then tape cassettes and Video CDs are still popular here as well.

Faxing is much used in technologically advanced Japan as well.

Probably to do with the languages amongst other things. Can be much quicker to write Chinese or Japanese with a pen and paper, than it is to enter it on a QWERTY keyboard.

You need this.

Banks still use the fax, other companies as well, though the smarter ones are realizing that they can scan and email signed documents, which is pretty much the same thing...

I have to admit that I'm scratching my head at this. :hmmmm2: I am as certain as I can be that Kubuntu can easily be installed and configured without ever touching a command line. Its settings are legendary--there are so many of them! But they're basically all accessible within its GUI. So I'm really not sure what you're referring to.

There are probably workarounds out there, but I can't say anything for sure. I understand about the HP recommendation because--in my experience--every HP printer, scanner, or all-in-one that I've ever had has worked out of the box with Linux. So it makes sense that it's the brand that gets recommended a lot.

I might just mess around after Christmas. Right now I am too immersed in making gifts to want to sit there.
What are you making? Post pics in the best camera thread if you're so inclined. :)

Slimboat? I'm not familiar with that. Off to see what I can find...

ETA: Just installed Slimboat browser and am playing with it a bit. Looks good so far--it's fast!

Does anyone who run KDE use Korganizer and can you add Google calendar to it? Also if I install it will it install Kontact? I don't want Kontact, if possible.

Thnx.

I installed KOrganizer at some point, but don't actually use it. I just found out when I ran it that because I've disabled Akonadi server, it can't do its thing. So I can't test it for you. However, I verified that Kontact can be removed without affecting KOrganizer (at least in terms of being ABLE to remove it, without simultaneously removing KOrganizer--whether the latter will function properly with Kontact gone, I can't honestly say).

My best advice is to simply install KOrganizer and see what happens. If Kontact gets installed, too, and you don't want it, remove it and see if KOrganizer still functions.

HP products think they know be all and end all about what you want. I've had one of their scanners yell since I wanted to scan at 300 DPI,
They don't deal with the color printing in Photoshop. I can get the requirements of each printer and coordinate the specs of printer, scanner, and screen. They also don't like vector programs. I've used Illustrator and Inkscape on the PC, and HP either prints gibberish or takes forever, on Linux it takes forever to print a page that has any graphics.
I do crafts, and HP with that circular feed they have will not take paper heavier than certain card stock. My Canon, which has direct feed will print on anything that fits in there.
I have a degree in Graphic Arts, I do things as we were taught in college. HP is a machine and how I do something is none of its business. Epson and Canon don't presume to tell you how to do anything. They tell you what might damage the printer, but no other comments.

The one good thing about HP printers, the old ones conserved the ink. I just reactivated one after 2 years of non use, and the ink printed.

As for gray - I couldn't find too much on customization, I'm not gung ho on fancy, but I do like the menu bar in one place, and I like the maximize, minimize, close icons on the right. There were a few other annoyances, not major, but just enough, and I still wasn't sure about Skype working.
Ubuntu has a plain gray screen, I found the old Gnome 2 setting with no animations.
When I had Mint, I got rid of the Mint splash screen and went to plain gray. But it was easier to get other stuff into Mint than this version of Ubuntu. I had ESR going.

As to Slimboat, I use Boat here, wondered if they were related. I think it used to be Slimbrowser and was just changed to Slimboat. I have Iron rather than Chrome, and I've removed both Bing and Google as search engines. I use Start Page, Ixquick and Duck. I haven't updated FX on Ubuntu as I don't like the newer versions, and was trying to get ESR. TMobile informed me my browser was out of date. I update most of the other stuff, I just uncheck FX and Mozilla. I haven't used it for a while, anyway.

The only thing FX has going is tab permissions. I don't have to look at a page full of images if I don't want to. I can turn them off on the fly. The new Australis is going to look like Chrome, and I'd rather have the menu bars where I can see them. Pale Moon (based on Mozilla) doesn't do Linux or Mac.

BTW, you have to edit a lot of crap in About:config. Mozilla has hooked into some social sites, and if you don't like it, you edit it. I want a browser that does nothing but browse, if I want a link, I bookmark, I can use tabs or not and all the toolbars are available. I don't like the damn speed dials either. They take up too much real estate. I can read faster than I can recognize the icon and a line of text is faster.
