The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

Ok found the issue well not really but I did get it solved :)

in my .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

I deleted the file and rebooted the computer I then choose the app i wanted associated with the file and it worked great :)

Went to opens use forum and a guy suggested running kbuildsycoca4 I ran it and received an error it pointed to this file
That will be good to know if I run into similar type of issues. I'm fairly new to using KDE myself. This is one thing about linux, there is so much to figure out troubleshooting issues, we just need a push in the right direction.

Thnx.

I found that this is also in the OpenSuse Repositories So even though the article talks about ubuntu, fedora, and centos. So you may want to check your repository to see if its available for your version and flavor of Linux

Yep, it is in Mageia 4 and I've installed it. Hopefully, I won't need it anytime soon! :) I don't pay any attention when articles speak of Ubuntu as if it's the only distro around. I check to see if a program is available for my distro.

Ubuntu One is dead, long live Ubuntu One.
Starting With The 31st Of July, Ubuntu One Will Be Officially Dead | LinuxG.net

Shows a major problem with depending on the cloud for your stuff. They pull the plug on it, you got to find somewhere else.

Another better item of Linux news, WPS Office is out for Linux. WPS Office is otherwise known as Kingsoft Office on Android. However it's only available in Chinese at the moment, but it seems to be very professional and well polished.

I'm putting it through its paces at the moment.

I never tried it myself. But I read there was privacy issues with it, apparently nothing was encrypted on Amazon's S3 servers, plus it was proprietary software as well. Which is likely the very things that many Linux users hate, and drove them to be using an open source OS in the first place, like me. I don't use Ubuntu myself, I use Mint, but isn't there some proprietary Amazon affiliate partnership stuff going on with Ubuntu itself?

I just went back to Linux again (albeit it won't run on my Mac, even with rEFIt, it just gives me 'missing OS' insert boot disk to continue) and tried OpenSUSE, a distro i have been wanting to try out for some time (mainly because it doesn't assume the user is an idiot and needing nanny style protection the way Ubuntu does) but couldn't due to the uber large 4.7GB download. but i finally waited for it to download and burn, and i actually like it. during install, it gives you the choice of DE, of course i chose KDE. there was a tiny little glitch or two upon first boot (sound wasn't working and was easily fixed by running Kmix and choosing the proper master channel, and the pop-ups for updates had to be disabled as they kept getting in the way) but otherwise i'm much happier with it for daily use. even double-clicking downloads works properly. in Ubuntu it'd always throw an error. i hated being locked to Ubuntu's package/app store. it was a lesson in dealing with migraines to reconfigure Ubuntu when i should have just used this one instead.

Installed latest stable Kubuntu. I guess it's OK. Spent most of the afternoon looking for what I needed to install to get to a working development platform. Not finished yet.

VirtualBox in Win7.

I'm looking to try something new/different for me. I'm leaning towards Crux Linux, a cross between Slackware/Archlinux or Sourcemage, SM is similar to Gentoo, a source based distro.

Decisions decisions...

I needed to get a Linux up asap. Just as soon as I have that, I'll start loading other distributions and tinker until I have what I want. I'm probably going to try Fedora next.

Lots to be said for source distributions though, you get what you want. Good idea! Hmmm....

Hey, while I'm here - I'd be happy with recommendations for a wysiwyg html editor. I won't use it much but it will be nice to have for dealing with junk people send me.

I found the wget/dget instructions for a kompozer that was supposed to be good for 14.04 - and nothing seemed to work. So I grabbed the tarball off of Source Forge - and nothing seemed to work. And that's about all the effort I have for kompozer.

Sounds interesting... I had a Slackware install for a while, maybe I will try that as a third OS.

Right now, I am wrestling with a Python installation and some work around the house that takes priority over banging my head over the laptop.

I'm currently using SalixOS, it's based on 'Slackware made easy', as their motto. I've been busy with other priorities also, with the wife being sick.
