The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

Motorola's pipeline was full with no new designs allowed for nearly 18 months after the Google acquisition.

This is much like an SGS3 except for the superior processor, superior screen, superior camera and more sensors, without a removable battery or sd card. :)

What extra sensors does it have over the S3? Temp? no. Barometric? no. Gyro? no. Accelerometer? no... Not arguing the processor or screen, but wouldn't necessarily include lack of removable battery and SD card as pluses either. :)

I could be way off on when the first rumors of an "X phone" showed up tough. I might be recalling the Moto Fighter though... Seems like the older I get, the harder it is to differentiate last week from last year! :D

Did I just read that 32GB is part of the customization so AT&T is the only carrier selling it until their exclusivity runs out? Seriously? Ridiculous.

And no photosphere. Whaaaat?

No kidding? Cool, I'll go edit that post, I thought those sensors came with the SGS4, many thanks! :)

Talk about not differentiating! :D

Fixed battery and no sd card slot, I think most of us generally hate that, but I see those as hardware usability features rather than what I'm (arbitrarily) calling performance features.

If you like/need to truck around dozens of GBs of data or media, or if you live/work in a reception fringe area guaranteed to eat batteries (plural) per day, yeah, this type of phone is all wrong for you, couldn't agree more, no matter what the processor or screen is about. :)

It really comes down to this. One of the reviewers said it best, this is the android I phone. This is a phone for the masses. It's comfortable, "right size", powerful enough for the lions share of tasks, it feels good, it's built good, it will function smoothly and flawlessly, it does neat things that the average person will appreciate (i.e. listen and respond to your personal assistant type needs), it's customizable, it's sexy, it will be a status sensation when you pull it out of your pocket in Starbucks. This is what it was designed for and built for.

I for one still really love the phone, and I will for some time grapple with if I should or shouldn't pay what I consider to be OUTRAGEOUS prices for it. That said for a moment consider this.

Iphone has NEVER been the spec leader in mobile phones, yet it was not until very recently it was overtaken by an android device for the phone in most consumers pockets. And now it's not one android phone but a fragmented bunch of android phones that out number the Iphone. if you were talking worldwide which phone maker has it's phone it's OS in peoples pocket the most, I think it's still apple. That said, Moto went to the drawing board to make a cross platform phone that worked for and spoke to the market. Not a small group of users but the greatest majority of users.

I think they did that well. And the pricing will not scare off the yuppies and designer kids they are hoping to win over.

Just my 2 cents

As far as the iphone...nobody is tackling apple anytime soon! ios is just way to strong with the masses and the Apple Eco system is just to huge and used by way to many people these days to even entertain Moto making a run at them or the X being mentioned in the same conversation as Apple.

This new android phone is an iphone killer or equal, that statement has been said so many times the last how many years? To many!

I respectfully disagree that this phone will be looked at as an iphone alternative, iphone customers won't entertain this phone IMO.

I'm an Android enthusiast, but I'm also an iphone user and can tell you right now, I won't be handing in my iphone for an X anytime soon. Why you ask? As far as the iphone goes, to me it's a great size, has one of the best cameras on a phone that I've ever used, the battery is awesome, the screen is fantastic in any light, and the one thing that so many people fail to realize....The Eco system is just huge, absolutely huge! Yes the hype is real about the iphone, and I know some say the specs are average. But the Eco system for me is the killer, and it's the same tune I'm singing that other iphone users will echo when faced between the X or the iphone... To me there's no contest between the two.

The fact is that moto went outside the box with customization and I will admit that it's a cool idea. But where they missed the boat is in the price ring. $199 is just nuts for this phone when honestly you can get a ONE, a GS4, or yes an iphone 5! This phone should have been designed to go after the no contract people, it should have been priced extremely aggressively at say $299-$399 off contract or $99 on contract with every major carrier. $199 on contract, and $600ish off contract is totally way out of whack for a phone of this nature with its specs.

And I know nobody is saying it, but the timing is terrible! The iphone 5S or 6 is right around the corner! This phone should have been announced in the spring and released in say late May. Releasing it in say early Sept is just not a smart move by moto IMO...just my 2 cents!

No no no no no.

Sean, you've always said that Android phones should announce and release like Apple.

Announcing in spring and releasing later in May?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you say that you already hated that it was announced yesterday for release later this month or September?

Am I missing something here bud? :)

And I've used iPhones, and I'm not going with the idea that the ecosystem is superior.

And worldwide, there are more Androids in people's pockets than iPhones, have been for some time.

I think Apple has the same publicist as the Marines. Mid grade tech will beat high end tech any day with the right PR campaign.

I don't disagree with most of this, because an apple fanboy is an apple fan boy. My dearest best friend is exactly what I just described, a die hard apple fanboy. That said, there are new consumers born every minute, there are new consumers coming of age every minute and this is a bold trek outside the preexisting perimeters. And it will not go unnoticed.

And I am glad you mentioned the "ecosystem" of fruit. Anyone else notice all the accessories that were announced and that there's more to come?

Can you say .... Motosystem?

I'm currently on a galaxy nexus and anxiously waiting to upgrade to this or the S4. My main usage is tethering, internet browsing, and pictures. The S4 does that all great but is a little too big for me. I read yesterday that the Moto X checks to see if tethering is enabled on your account. Can the Moto X tether without having to pay an extra fee? (I'm on Verizon with unlimited data). Thanks.

The cost throws me off a little. I was ready to order yesterday if I could get a 32 GB version for $399 or under. I will have more trouble paying $649 at this point without waiting for the next Nexus.

I will say this. I am someone who always ends up back with an iPhone as my daily phone simply because the size works for me and "it just works." It is similar to what Blackberry used to be for me. That being said, I would love for my "it just works" phone to be an Android device. Calendar widgets, customizations make it a better business device in my opinion. That is what I am hoping this device is.

I am a tech whore like the rest of us. I have probably owned 10 Android phones in the last 2 years. I love trying them and tinkering, but when I need my main phone to be a communication device I kept going back to Apple. If off-contract this phone is competitively priced, I will pick it up immediately. I will have trouble buying it at the same price as the GS4 Google Edition.

Now if they could just make a Moto X+ I would be all in.

Something just hit me.

The Moto Veep of Engineering said they did a lot to the Linux and Dalvik side - yesterday I criticized that because I couldn't make sense of what he said that wasn't already standard Android.

If they've extended the software so that GPU acceleration is forced everywhere - and if this is truly unique compared to other Snapdragons as a quad of Adreno 320s - then this thing could very well be a screaming speed demon.

Or not.

But now I wonder. :hmmmm:

Not disagreeing with anyone on the price, I've long said retail on these things is far too high - but now I really want to see one running.
