The Nintendo 3DS streams Netflix before the EVO...how disappointing.

Speaking from someone who owns an EVO and probably won't get a 3DS. Honestly, I never would have thought this would be the case when I purchased my EVO last June. Pretty disappointed at this point.

i agree. only been using Netflix at home for 4 months but love it. would like the ability to queue up a flic when the urge comes up. i heard something not too long ago that Netflix was ditchin' the DVD portion of their operation. perhaps if they had more resources directed to the online streaming aspect, it will happen soon.
 
What about using flash in your browser? Isn't one of the advantages of Android is that you can view flash movies? Maybe not HD quality, but SD.
 
netflix is not hurting for money or resources. comcast and those cats are trying to hurt netflix but thats well beyond the scope of this thread..

playon is a great app that lets you stream netflix, hulu, and many other channels to your device. you need a PC at home (no mac support yet). it works very well on the handheld.

I don't think so. I believe it's only been announced that upcoming phones with the new Snapdragon processor will be capable of streaming. No word on when or if existing phones will be supported.
 
I am having trouble finding the article, and I believe it was from one of the MWC articles on the main phandroid page, but some high ranking guy at netflix said the open source programming of Android was too much of a risk to users to stream netflix on current tablets and phones. Only products with certain safety measures hardwired into the chipsets approved by netflix would get a netflix app. That would imply though that there will be no backwards compatibility.
 
Really?!?!?! That is very very disappointing to hear especially with all the hacks we have been able to come across.

I blame Microsoft since Netflix requires Microsoft Silverlight to run their videos over the web. Otherwise, I could've been watching from my Evo all along!

I used to be on my Nintendo DSi all the time before I had my Evo...once I got the Evo, that all changed. This is sad news indeed.

That's just the thing!! Microsoft Silverlight is required to watch Netflix over the web.

But according to the Mod here, the app, Playon, let's you stream Netflix. I'm going to try it out.
 
As stated in a previous post, PlayOn lets you stream Netflix and Hulu to an Android device. Only bummer is that it cost $ for the service. But it works well. Hopefully Netflix will get to us soon. Once again, Android has to big a market share to ignore. I'm guessing we will see it soon.

Whatever. Where there's a will, there's a way. That's literally the only thing that need be said on this case. If thats what they're scared of, they might as well shut down netflix entirely, like the whole company. I know three people that pirate at home from them... what's next? Requiring home computers to have new specific, locked out hardware to watch their movies? ****, its so dumb.

They made it where there has to be a special media player in place in order to stream it live. I thought the same thing. It asks you to install windows silverlight, which won't work on android. It's cool though, right now they are partial to Apple, but give it time. They'll be knockin down Androids door.
 
The PLAYON app isnt that great because you have to be hooked up to the same wifi which netflix is playing on. So in other words if you are at home watching netflix on your computer, ps3... you can do the same on the phone. But as soon as you leave the wifi, so does your ability to stream movies with app. Pretty dumb huh.

That's only the initial time using the app. You need to be on the-same wi-fi so the PC and phone communicate. after that, you're free to roam the earth and watch your shows.
 
I don't think it's coming anytime soon, and probably not to any current Android devices (only future ones). At best we can hope for something for our current phones coming in an OTA Gingerbread update like the Blockbuster app did......but I doubt it.

Not holding my breath on an Android app, at least not for my Evo.

In the meantime, I'll just keep converting DVDs to play on my Android phone and/or converting streaming video to play on my Android phone.

Seems kind of silly that Netflix is using the DRM excuse as to why they won't release an Android app, but yet I use my PC to copy/convert both DVDs and streams now. Almost all DRM cracking software is written for Windows based PCs, but Netflix streaming was first available on what? The PC. Yet we don't get an Android app because they're worried about copyrights and hacking? Hello?

I think they signed some dark deal with Apple to only produce an app for the iOS devices.

I guess this doesn't pertain to Apple iPhones then. My co-worker next to me is streaming Grown Ups movie as I type via the NetFlix App. WEAK!! :mad:
 
That's correct. My oldest son has taken over the family Netflix account at college, where he watches movies all the time on his iPad. If I wasn't a Netflix customer since a few months after their launch, and if there www any alternative that wasn't well on its way out of business, I would've canceled my subscription over this. It's stupid and short/narrow-sighted.
 
I am a little disappointed. I actually "pirated" less when I started using netflix again. (after a try again for free offer.) There are only maybe three apps that iPhone has that I want: Netflix, strobosoft, vlc. (and a good solid flac player, although I think I found one.)

Netflix is a proactive effort against pirating, no one is going to pirate off of android when they can just torrent.

I call BS. There is another reason, and yes I have read their statement.
 
I wish there was more than a handful of movies made each year that didn't suck, making a subscription service like netflix more appealing than redbox.
 
Well netflix has more than just movies and that's a big reason it would be huge on android phones I would love to stream some tv shows here and there that would be great. I agree with one of the above posters about it being BS that it is from DRM issues why they haven't brought it to android phones yet. It would be so much easier for someone to pirate from a pc so maybe they should go ahead and just let netflix streaming be an apple exclusive.
 
I would like to point out that it is entirely possible that this is what it takes for Netflix, as a company, to keep all of the companies that license their content to them happy. It is "silly" to think that people are going to pirate off of a mobile phone, but frankly these companies don't care. I would be willing to bet that this is more a move from Netflix to keep getting more content rather than become pressured into removing content or not getting anything new simply because they aren't taking the nexessary precautions to curb piracy.

Anyway, just something to chew on... I could be completely and utterly wrong here, and if I am, BOO TO YOU NETFLIX!
