That refers to "selective hearing" as opposed to simply blocking out the noise.
My Darling Bride has the Imaginary Brake Pedal in the passenger floorboard... and handprints on the passenger dashboard as she's slapping it with her open hand to alert me to a brake light 2 blocks ahead of us...

'oyyy, ... the truth in that .....
It's near gut wrenching t' remember the times I've been in that situation.
And then we get the whole "if you don't know why I'm mad at you, then I'm not telling you!"

Yeah, I tried that.
That resulted in this response: “Tell me what you were wrong about and where you went wrong. And what, exactly, you’re sorry for. Then tell me how you will avoid doing that in the future."
