The official "I have my Droid 2" thread

Just got mine about an hour ago and I love it!:D This is my first smartphone so I'm still trying to figure some things out. The keyboard feels good to me, the buttons seem a little "puffy" which makes them easy to push, although like all new keyboards it will take some time to get used to.

I feel the same way about the keyboard Zero. But I think the original Droid was like that out of the box and then the keys loosened up the more you used it. I'm expecting it'll be fine soon.

SPACE RESERVED FOR PICTURES WHEN FED EX SHOWS UP AT ANY MOMENT NOW!!!!

Woooo Whooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! :)

PS: Hopefully the 'edit' function doesn't expire.
PPS: I am admittedly a little intimidated about this phone... I feel as though there is an infinite amount of power and possibility with this huge upgrade from my dated Touch Pro 2 with Winmo 6.5, so I am going to continue to hang out here on Android Forums! :)
PPPS: I am going to have to go through the favorite app and games thread with a fine tooth comb and get to downloadin' some fun!

So... its been a few hours on launch day already for crying out loud... is there a one-click root yet? HAHA!

HERE IT IS... I took this with my Touch Pro 2 - my goodness I hate that camera, I literally took this picture SEVEN times to get it to be at least recognizable, auto focus and low light shooting is deplorable on the TP2

So i'll start off by saying I work at a local verizon authorized retailer and we just got our shipment for droid 2's today. Me being the techie person I am decided to check it out see what I think of it.I will be comparing it to the moto droid mostly because it is the direct succesor.

... the home dock works the car dock does not. Uses same battery and charging port so those are fine, cases also do not fit properly, all of this is due to the lip at the bottom of the phone.

Hi, THANKS A LOT for that great 1st impression post! Have you had a chance to play with the turn-by-turn navigation that comes with the phone? This is one of the MAIN selling points for me, having a true voice guided GPS for FREE with the phone! :) (At least that's how I hope it works, haha!)

Also... do you see any possibility 720p video recording might be unlocked in the future for this phone?

I'm just waiting for the doorbell to ring and my D2 to be handed to me!

Awesome to hear about the buttons on the keyboard! Coming from the Touch Pro 2 with possibly the best QWERTY of any phone ever made, I am hoping it will be a nice transition.

Also, this isn't my first smart phone by any means, but my first Android. Good luck with your first foray into the smart phone World, everything I've read and heard says the Droid 2 is a can't miss! Post up your pictures in the official Droid 2 thread (Got my Droid 2). :)

Mine doesn't come till tomorrow.. :(

Ahhhhh man, did you order yours after 4:30 pm local time? It was repeated again and again about if you order BEFORE 4:30pm "local time" Verizon could basically assure you an overnight delivery by 3:00pm the next day (I also got a follow up Email after my credit card went through reiterating this).

So, it's nearly noon here on the East Coast... COME ON FED EX!

PS: I know this doesn't belong in this thread, so I'm going to start a new one soon dedicated to it, and I hope you can chime in - but for a brand new virgin Android user, what is a great list of games (free and paid) and apps (free and paid) to get the most out of their new experience with such a great OS and phone? :)

Nope.. I have a buddy who's a manager at VZW. He is getting me one for free, but he wasn't able to ship it out until today. So I guess I can put up with the wait.. ;)

Hmmm... I found a really good list not too long ago. I'll look for it.

Have mine in hand. Can't really play with it until after work though. Until then it's just sitting on my desk. Waiting.

1. Display looks better than the X and even the original Droid. Far sharper than my Inc. Does not appear washed out like the Droid 1 did. Can not figure out why though, since LCD like D1....

2. Signal reception seems the same as X and Inc (which is fine). Only tested in the area around the VZW store, though.

3. Call quality puts my Inc to shame :(

4. Sound quality for music is same as Droid and X, but not as good as Inc. Not saying it is bad, just less volume and less depth of sound IMO.

5. Keyboard is FAR better than the Droid 1

6. Never used Froyo before, but comparing web sites same time with my Inc- the Droid 2 kicks Inc's butt for speed and I now see what I am missing with Flash Lite, compared to full Flash :( I think the performance is due to Froyo and not hardware, since both have 512mb.

7. Apps2sd does not appear to work, but the device has 7.4gb free for app storage- apps2sd IMO is pointless as a result, for this device.

8. Could not test wifi and did not test video. I already know from the X vidoe is fine anyways.

I must admit that if I did not already have my Inc, I would get the Droid 2, due to the great keyboard on the D2. It works SWEET with game emulators!!!!

added:

The keyboard's sweetness eases the sound quality issue, compared to the Inc. Though I prefer plain Android, I still prefer Sense over the Blur junk- even less Blur is annoying to me.

The nav is awesome on these phones, saved me tons of hassle since im horrible with directions. and I dont think it will ever get 720 recording since it has almost identicle camera hardware as the droid 1

Since this is something I'm more excited about than anything else... would you mind explaining how the Navigation works please? I don't want to hijack the thread, but is the turn-by-turn truly as powerful and accurate/functional as if I were to go buy a Garmin? Thanks! :)

for me its been extremely accurate, never sent me down a wrong street, never sent me to dead ends, it updates the maps in real time so that you dont have to buy map packs, I also believe it routes you around traffic. Id say it better than any dedicated GPS <200$ on par with 200-350 GPS and lacking compared to a 400+ GPS.

I hook mine up to my car stereo through a 3.5 mm jack and then pop my phone into the car dock, play music through the phone while the GPS is running, then when it comes up to a a turn or something it pauses the music speaks the direction then resumes the music.

Also keep in mind Verizon has a 30 day return policy so give the phone a shot see how you like the phone to your personal needs if you dont like it return or exchange it. and I highly recomend getting some insurance wheter its the monthly through asurion or through a third party (my company uses global warrenty group)

Got mine, the build quality is excellent. Ear piece produces good sound, far better then the dinc. Screen looks the same as the dinc but the dinc's screen sits in deeper.

Got mine from the Verizon store at 9am this morning. Coming from an Evo 4g - I looove the size and weight of the D2. The keyboard is great. I got the silicone/plastic combo case which I am getting used to and got the cradle as well (20% off each item when you buy two accessories!)

One thing that is really bothering me though is I can't seem to turn off the haptic feedback on the soft keys (menu/back/search/etc) buttons on the screen itself.

I've gone to the Sound settings, and the Language and Keyboard settings (both have are not checked for haptic and vibrate on keypress) yet when I hit the keys they still are vibrating the phone. Coming from an iphone originally I am not a phone of haptic feedback.

Any ideas?

I went to a VZW store to play with it, and did so for about ten minutes.

I love the design and build (especially the new slider - very solid), but I could not get over the lagginess of the home screen. Maybe it was just the Moto skin, but it was sloooow. I loaded Launcher Pro on it, and even that was laggy with the memory preset on high.

I was a little disappointed with it. My rooted Droid with LP is so much smoother and faster. I am OCed at 1000mhz, but this thing should be even faster.

Death to manufacturer skins!

Could someone please open up the camera and listen closely and tell me if you can hear a "shutter" type sound? like fast clicks.....TIA

rushmore: Does the speaker sound louder than the X? Or as loud as the Droid?

tebower: I know we have to test the phones in stores. But sometimes they are not a real indicator of the how the phone feels, responds. I use LP and it has no lag on my X.

Got mine.

Solid piece of equipment :P UI is uglier than the incredible but oh well. Runs smooth after it's been on for a few minutes.

The Test phone at my VZW ran super smooth, but my phone when i opened it ran really slow for about an hour.

the D2 is now blazing over the incredible i took back.

Dunno why? Maybe cuz it's brand new :P

Pretty soon, a lot of people will want to post separate threads saying that they have their device. I am starting this single thread that you can all use to boast and brag all you want.

Any threads outside of this being of the topic will simply be deleted, closed, or merged to avoid clutter within the forum - so please use this thread.

:)

I thought of doing this, yesterday, but decided:

a) it was too strict and authoritarian. ;)
b) Since most folks are opting for the DX (because of its superior specs and beauty) and because it's so quiet in here, I thought having more posts about the phone would make it seem like a more popular forum! ;)

Heheh.. I couldn't resist. Feel free to ban me, now. My wife would probably thank you! :) :) :p

I couldnt hear any clicky sound like on my droid 1. Im actually thinking of picking one of these up of my rooted and oced droid 1. i love the keyboard and the more I use it the more i like it

Gallandof - Would your store happen to have some in stock? Or expect to have some in stock this weekend?

Haven't paid much attention to the hype since I'm on Sprint with the Evo, so I'm not sure what the stock levels are around (they didn't have any out to mess around with at the Verizon store in Hanover last night). My girlfriend is looking for a new phone - she's looking at the Ally or the Droid 2. Since I'm in Rockland, figure might as well give some business to local guy on the this forum.
