The Return of the Micro SD slot?

Manufacturers need to give us 64GB internal as a base size, at that point I could overlook the lack of an sdcard slot.

Flash storage is not even that expensive, mobiles have taken the place of laptops for many but they have only a fraction of the storage.

We should be at 128GB or 256GB now, not still stuck at 16GB on many cases.

Yeah why is internal flash storage so much more expensive than external??
 
Storage doesn't worry me, 16GB is plenty for the amount of music I'd want to carry around day to day, and for the photos I take (they're automatically backed up to Google Drive anyway). The SD Card is really useful on rooted phones with limited storage - Wildfire S in my case, which has 2GB thanks to Int2Ext4+ , 1GB Linux Swap and the rest of the card as normal external storage. The only reason I use a custom ROM is when the OEM Won't supply updates (I'm looking at you Sony).

This post brought back fond memories of my first Android phone. I remember doing all that stuff and putting CM7 on it too. :) It looks like you used my old rooting guide back in July, 2012. You've had that phone a loooong time :D
 
SD card has always been crucial to me, since my Nokia N80 with 1GB MiniSD card back in 2006. I remember watching a movie on it (Hostel 1) for the 1st time using DivX Player, from there on I've wanted more and more storage in my phones.

I have a ton of Pics+vids taken with my phones over the years, as well as Series (Shameless, The Fixer, Suits, South Park and some others), plus Movies that I watch before bed, backups, Music, Documents (uni assignments, app forms, guides, study notes etc...) that I backup to my phone etc... So I need lots of storage.

I currently have a GS4 32GB plus a 32GB MicroSD in it, I'm hoping to upgrade to a Note 4 64GB when it arrives, hopefully the 64GB variant is widely available otherwise I'll get a Note 4 32GB and a 64GB MicroSD.

To me memory cards and having a ton of Local storage is a must as I use my smartphones for a lot of things.
 
You can add LG to list of manufacturers that still use SD. My Optimus F3 has inherited the same 16GB sd that my old Galaxy Prevail was equipped with.

...And I'm starting to feel the space squeeze, too. :P

Back when I used my Galaxy Prevail, it was pretty much only really powerful enough to do 8/16 bit console emulation, and since the ROMs aren't that big, I could fit my entire "classics" library on the card. :D

The F3, on the other hand, is beefy enough to handle, say, PPSSPP and ePSXe at playable framerates, so I started to move my existing libraries to my phone...only to realize I can't fit it all now. :(

My TF700t Transformer Infinity is the 32gb model....and I still chose to buy another SD (16gb, again) so I can add my entire PSP library without draining all the space. As it is, the library filled up that card too with no room for my PS1 stuff! :eek:

LOL! Unfortunately it's the US one mate, I've been watching US one since the Pilot episode as thats the one our satellite tv provider had so I went and got it.
Will give the UK one a look.
 
if you don't have an SD card slot its more likely you will use googles storage 'services'

could be they are trying to push people into the cloud so eventually they can turn around and spring a (premium?) sub free on you once your are at the point where you phisically need it to use your device. ( also so they can spy on you ) ;)

I probably repeat myself a bit on this subject but I personally don't see the point when flash storage is now so affordable, quick search turned up around $15/
 
With Google, mining your data to target ads is a given. I find it reassuring when I go to the Play Store home page and see what they "recommend" to me - it tells me that they've not come close to working out my preferences so far ;)

I'll dispute the phrase "can't go wrong" though. I know you meant financially, but SD cards do fail (as well as get lost), so if the stuff on there is important you want a backup anyway.

HTC One mini 2 is here: 13 MP and 5 MP cameras, BoomSound, and a 4.5" display

LG is also said to bringing the SD slot in the upcoming LG G3 after leaving it out in the G2. Even the LG G Pro 2 brought it back after they left it out in the Optimus G Pro.

It seems almost every company that took out the SD slot is bringing it back now, I'm so glad as even Microsoft are becoming more and more SD card friendly in WP8 and WP8.1. I don't mind not being able to install apps+games in the SD, I've always believed in Installing apps+games in internal storage as well as pics+vids taken by the phones Camera for a stable experience and putting 3rd party media e.g. Music, Movies, Series, Documents, backups etc... in the SD card. I have had a 4GB MicroSD fail on me in 2007 on my Nokia N81 and also had a 32GB MicroSD fail on me in my GS3 before my GS3 broke early last year, so I do keep a backup of my data in my laptop, and I backup my documents to the cloud, in Google Drive and Dropbox so that I can access them with my iPad and any other device.
 
Microsoft is bringing back external storage. :eek: I didn't know that. Hmmm, Now I'm torn. I was a huge Pocket PC fan I even liked Windows Mobile but when the took out external storage in the Windows Phone software I jumped ship to Android. I wonder if Jason Dunn or Dale Coffig are still in the game? There were a couple of developers and hardware repair people I had really good relations with as well. One guy automated the whole rooting thing on Pocket PCs making it extremely easy to change just about anything and PocketPCTechs could upgrade just about any manufacturers hardware for a truly custom device experience. Something for an ex- Microsoft MVP to definitely think about.

No SD slot, no phone...simple. I use a HTC One
 
I'm getting more into ROMs and customising now, and with things like ROM Manager and Titanium backup I'm finding having an SD is more or less essential, usually the phone storage is wiped when you load a different ROM.
 
It's the one thing I miss from my S3. I was able to put all my nandroids on the SDcard and not worry about internal for apps, etc. Now I gotta be careful with my G2 and generally only keep one backup on device. If the G3 has an SDcard slot (doubtful), I'll jump on it immediately.
