Thinking about going naked

my eris was in good shape until yesterday when i was luging a cinder block and scratched the pretty silver accent on the top, and i now have a scratch across my camera lens cover. yeah, my head fell off. but my wonderful wife is due for an upgrade in oct and she said that i could use it to get a new phone, and she would take the eris cause she doesnt mind scratches. i also have a small gouge in the screen, which i swear is plastic, i have read that some might be glass, mine definately is not. other that that unfortunate business, my phone is great! i havent ever punted it across the parking lot yet, like i have accidentally with so many other phones. my last one went so far i had to wait for the lady to come out of the grocery store and move her car so i could get my phone back, and thats after it skided for about 10 feet through the parking lot. was an ugly sight.

i have the vzw ribbed case and holster. it has done well, but now that it has some wear and tear on it i have 2 issues

1. it is getting a little loose when being holstered or retrieved.
2. after being snagged a few times on different items the holster has cracked right above the "wings" on the left and right in the middle. this makes it more loose

i need a holster, need it, i hate pocketing ym phone, i had a otterbox commuter, nice case, but no holster and the hard plastic made it rather slick.

innocase and holster are in the mail now, should be here today i hope...

You can replace the battery cover with this OEM one from VZW. That should take care of the scratch on the camera lens. Only $15 too.

I think you should have a silicone case just incase you drop it.

I have dropped it...over and over. It's been thrown by my lil one many times as well. I don't see the need for a case since its stood up just fine without.

Allthough it would make it easier to tell apart from my wifes, since we both have the Eris xD

I have bad luck when I don't use a case with my phones. I had a tracfone, a pretty stylish flip phone. It was really slim and sleek. One day I took it to work without the case, all was well. I was on my way to the car when it was time to leave, went outside, reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, it got caught on something.. belt loop, jacket, I don't know but it gymnasticified it's way to the pavement and got a nice gash in the corner... Fail... lol.

Then I had a Samsung Eternity, and I was in my basement working out, using the Eternity to listen to some tunes. I figured eh what the heck, I'm in the house I don't need the silicone case.. Well I wanted to change the song that was playing so I reached for my phone, picked it up, and my arms must have been worked too hard or something because all of a sudden the phone shot out of my hand and went flying in the direction opposite of where my arm was actually moving, and of course, it manages to land 5 feet away in the one spot there is no carpet, just bare concrete floor.. It landed, battery cover flew off, and the corners were scuffed. It actually didn't look bad at all, a bit scuffed, but hard to see..

Soo, I hope this provided you all with some form of amusement. Mind you nothing like this EVER happens to me when my devices are in their cases. Only when they are vulnerable.

So due to past experiences, my hero, is very RARELY out of it's FlexiShield, and it has a screen protector! lol.

Just remember... if you choose to go without a case... crap happens... XD

Let's see. My first phone got water damaged. My daughter was about 2 and she jumped in the pool, I dove in after fully clothed, the phone in my pocket. The next one fell out of a shirt pocket into a huge vat of baked beans---boy the folks at Verizon had fun with that one. The next one fell off my hip cutting grass and was run over by the lawn mower. Bloody thing still worked, but the screen was mangled, you couldn't see who was calling or anything. The next one got damaged in the hurricanes of '04. The humidity was so high inside the house it water damaged it. Charger caught fire with one, the phone went right up with it. I'm rough on phones. Insurance is a must for me.

Today the Eris slipped out of my hands and skittered across the parking lot at Publix. Not a scratch on it. I think I've finally met my match.

I've been running naked for a while now, but I've decided to spare people.

So, I found my happy-medium. I went to VZ yesterday to pick up an extra charging cable, and as I'm looking around I see this really cool blue case that says "Droid Eris" on it.

It was only 12 bucks, and with my discount I got it for 5$!. It's cool because its not overly bulky like the one I used to have, and doesn't have that annoying bump in the back for the "belt clip". It also makes my phone look 10x more bad ass. Check it out, not sure if it's a local store thing or not;

I have not tried but do the cheap verizon screen covers just pull off or is their glue under them.

I have only had my Eris for 3 days. It is naked. But, I do have 2 cases coming for it sometime this week that I bought on Amazon. But they are pretty "girly" cases!! :)

I was going to get screen protectors for it, but have decided not to after reading this thread! I did stop by a Verizon store today and picked up a holster for it. Yesterday I was working in the garden, listening to tunes, and I usually wear pants that don't have pockets. I was getting the dreaded "skipping", and thought I was hitting the ff button or something. (Realize after searching these forums that is not the case so I went and bought a pair of scullcandy's and will see if that helps.) Decided to get the holster for when working outside. However, I have a nasty habit of just throwing my phone in my purse, so I may keep it in the holster...when it's in my purse! LOL

I like how thin that one is. I might try that. So far my phone's been naked, and I haven't dropped it (knock on wood). However, I did drop my previous phone several times on concrete, so I'm not very confident in my ability to keep it from harm.

I've dropped it 2 or 3 times, once onto a kitchen floor at work right on the screen. So far the screen is fine, no scratches, cracks, chips.

I did the same thing in the elevator at work the other day. It fell about five feet and landed smack dab on tile floor (I was raising it to my ear). I was like, OH SH**!!! but it was just fine. No scratches or nothing.

After six months of using the Zagg protector, this thread convinced me to take it off and go naked. Man, the screen feels so smooth and slippery! I'm still using the ribbed 2-piece holster/case from Verizon, though.

Zagg protectors kick ass. Had it on my touch for 3 years and I have one on my eris. The ones I have used do not effect the sensitivity at all.

I really like that blue case as well. It looks like it's just enough to hold the phone together in case of a drop. It also gives a little protection to the camera and also keeps the phone raised up slightly (when laying down) so the sound doesn't get too muffled.

I need to find one.

My verizon screen protector is getting uglier and uglier. It needs to go soon, but i'm not sure I want to put another one on there. Sounds like the screen stands up just fine without one, and putting an extra film on there that collects smudges and scratches is really making my phone experience worse, not better... right?

I bought the smoke silicon case from ebay. It works well, feels good and has really protected my phone. I like how it keeps the phone from resting on the camera lens and also protects all the chrome and the speaker (no paint wear at all after 4 months). It also really helps to keep the lint and dust out of the little crevices since it just barely covers those sides. It really absorbs a lot of shock when dropped. However, it is nearing the end of it's life, there are a ton of scratches on it and it just won't clean up very nicely anymore. I also got ink on it and it refuses to come out. I'm thinking I'll eventually go naked, maybe once I get 2.1 so it will feel like a whole new phone! It will take some getting used to to not have the grippy silicon on it, though.

I also bought the Phantomskinz screen protector, but just never put it on. I have no scratches at all. There is on tiny little dot if the lighting and angle is just right, but it is right above one of the sensor dots on the screen and is never really noticeable. I have no idea where it came from.

Come on 2.1!

well, picked up my first scratch in less than a week going naked. oh well. so much for those saying that it's very tough to put a scratch on this thing. then again i knew it would happy quickly. i've got a lot of experience with glass and know that it scratches pretty easily. i guess most people are a bit blind or don't know how to look for a scratch in the right light. can't imagine going months and not picking up a scratch. and i've babied this thing in the last week.

I've been without a screen protector since mid-Feb or so and have yet to scratch my screen. And yes, I do know how to look for scratches. I keep it in my pocket, usually by itself, but sometimes other things do find there way in there with it. I wouldn't say that I baby it, but I do take a bit more care in handling it than I did with my previous phones. In my experience, a screen protector is not necessary.

+1

My phone's spent most of the last three months traveling naked in my jeans pocket, and there's not a scratch on it. And my eyesight is still fine, thanks. :)

Peeled the screen protector off today. It was getting gunky and I'm gambling that the things that scuffed it won't hurt the glass. Took a microfiber cloth and some water to get the crud off, and it's so nice! I love not getting my finger caught on the screen protector when I swipe down the notification screen.

Unfortunately, I was hoping that a naked screen would be less likely to get sticky with slightly sweaty fingers. But it's just as bad. Using Swype is kindof a pain in those circumstances.

My wife's phone is due for an upgrade, but I worry about protecting the screen of an Eris (or Incredible) if she routinely tosses the phone in her purse. i suppose she could just have a pocket in her purse dedicated to the phone, but I was wondering if anyone else has suggestions for specific cases or sleeves that would offer protection but not hamper the accessibility of the phone.

Thanks for your input!
