Thinking about jumping the Apple ship, need some advice

(as replied in PM) Hiya Crookedsoul! I'm sorry but I don't have a Mac, I'm running PC. How I got my contacts into my phone is that I had the ATT store rep transfer them from my iPhone to my SGS2. I then inadvertently prompted my SGS2 to sync with my contacts in Google. Ended up with a lot of duplicates. I spent about 10 minutes deleting my duplicates and now it's fine. If you have your contacts stored locally on your Mac then hopefully a Mac user can help ya.

1. I can't get my contacts on my mac to synch with google so I can get them on the phone.

Step 1 - Address Book, All Contacts, File->Export->Export Group vCard...

Step 2 - login to Gmail on web via Mac

Step 3 - Contacts (link in the left of the page, upper area, below colorful Gmail logo)

Step 4 - More (dropdown) -> Import -> browse to saved vCard file on your Mac

(optional - After that point, choose to remove duplicates using the More (dropdown) in the event that you started adding things to your phone by hand and your contacts start to get tangled - OR - if you just want to be clean from Address Book, simply delete all Google Contacts on the web first, then complete the Import.)

Step 5 - wait a moment and contacts will sync from cloud to phone automagically

Once you are SURE that all of your updates to your phone are complete, if you want this to all auto-sync together, depending upon your OS X revision:

Address Book -> Preferences ... click to sync with Google, follow prompts from there.

Hope this helps!

I bought a Galaxy S2 yesterday under the same circumstances as you. I spent 5 hours reading articles and forums on the internet and in the end decided it was 100% personal preference between iOS and Android. Just as many people swear by one as the other, and just as many people have switched and said they are never going to look back to one as the other. In the end, I decided that I could go buy the phone and try it. Worst case scenario, I return it within 30 days, pay a $35 restocking fee, and lose all the time I spent learning the new OS. For me, I obsess about having the best technology. So that is a price that I will gladly pay to know securely that I have it.

If you get the phone from Best Buy ( and likely other places), you won't have to pay the stocking fee if you return it within 30 days.

And if you stick around with Android, you'll realize that even among the elite Android superphones, there is great debate about which one is the best at any given moment.

Of course, there is no best. Only personal preference that makes it best for YOU.

I do have to say that if you're the type that has tons of music and albums, and you've been successfully using iTunes to manage that music, Android is going to feel like a step backwards. Sure there are analogous apps to iTunes, but from what I've seen personally and what gets posted on the forums, I can say that most people who've tried both will give the edge to iTunes.

I think iTunes is a very decent music manager. The rest of it makes no sense at all. Sometimes I wonder how iTunes could be made by the company that champions usability. And the fact that it is forced upon you for most of Apple's mobile devices is one reason I won't ever consider one.

Hi

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I want to say thank you for the help you gave me in this thread.

I've been meaning to return here and express my thanks for a while and kept forgetting.

I appreciate the help you gave to a potential Android phone buyer -- especially the detailed replies from EarlyMon and Lunatic59.

Even though you gave me some great information and it's possible I could have been happy with an Android phone, I was too unsure about it to make the leap. I have concerns about the carrier abandoning my phone (no updates) and threats such as malware. Yes, some of you will say "but there are ways to deals with these things." The point is that I don't want to. I want my phone to be simple and trustworthy.

So I bought an iPhone 4s.

Despite my decision, I appreciated the straightforward answers I got here and how you were willing to help out a newbie.

I'll certainly direct Android owners to this forum in the future.

You collected data, weighed the variables, applied your personal metric and made an informed decision. Who could ask for a more intelligent purchase? It's not about 'winning' or 'losing', it's (supposed to be) about choosing what's right for each of us. What is wonderful is that there,in fact, are choices to be made.

I think you made the wisest choice for you. :D

Good luck and feel free to revisit the forums.
