Thinking about leaving VZW for T-Mobile

Coverage Maps | Sensorly
3G and 4G LTE Cell Coverage Map - OpenSignal
Check cellphone and carrier coverage | RootMetrics

according to these maps the coverage isn't that great, but according to these maps the verizon coverage isn't that great either! my primary areas are 92626 (work) and 92602 (home) anyone from orange county ca care to chime in about T-Mobile call/data reception?

Yeah, the problem with sensorly maps is that they only report where people using the app have sent results from. So signal could be a lot better than what's being shown.

thanks for the advice. just checked my usage over the last 6 months and looks like i actually average 9.3 gigs of data per month and 113 minutes of talk per month. so data wise i'd be fine on t-mobile but talk minutes would be very close to the $30mo threshold. saving an extra $40 a month does sound nice though.

Extra minutes on the $30 plan are only 10 cents each, so it sounds like you'd only pay an extra $1.30 for your extra minutes. Of course, you'd be doing almost half your data at 2G speeds, which seems like it might be tougher to live with.

Anyone recommend a nice cheap phone to use with Tmobile? Around $100-200. I would like to get the N5 but may not be able to get it until after the new year. My contract expires in early December.

I guess I could look around at some used phones also. I need to figure out what phone to get before December. The wife's contract expires in November.

Once the Nexus 5 is released, expect to see a lot of Nexus 4s go up for sale. I might be having one go up after all. :p

I thought about that also, but my budget is really strained for awhile. It is one reason I want to switch from vzw to tmo and the $30/mo deal!

Since you're looking in the 100-200 range, Nexus 4s might be near the top of that once the Nexus 5 comes out. Plus a little rooting gets you LTE for T-Mobile on it.

Before long, there will be an LTE-enabled Nexus 4 on the market, which should drop the 1st gen price even lower - assuming it is still sold.

Last month the HTC One S was on sale for $180. The Optimus was on sale for $150. Go check on slickdeals and fatwallet site for latest phone sales.

I did 11GB last month. 1TB is a lot.

I did try the $30 for a month. You have to have patience and tolerance if you want to deal with VOIP.

Using Groove IP?

No. I just uses the regular phone line, so I think it uses my minutes. I hardly ever use my phone as a phone, so 700 mins goes a long way.

If I were to ditch VZW, I'd sell my S4 and get a Nexus 5.
I'd have to sell my wife's iPhone 5 and probably get her a 5s

Do you need to have home phone? Is it VOIP home phone? I have no home phone and that $ goes toward my cellphone.

Nope. No land line. Just my cell phone.
Install Google voice, set up my GV number, put $10 on the account, and in the course of a year with calls to Canada every few months, it's got more than $8 left on the account. My wife has family there, and you know a female doesn't make a short phone call.

Edit: I believe the way Google voice works is, when I make a call with it
My phone dials into Google voice, then it dials out to whoever you're calling.
So the person receiving your call sees your Google voice number on their caller ID.
And if you're on a plan that has a minute limit, it will use your minutes.

The T-Mobile S2 is priced around there used, and still a very nice phone. Even though I'm on a Note 2 now I don't want to ditch mine. VOIP over hspa kinda sucks though, I've only been happy doing that with a nice LTE signal.

VOIP sucks with hspa? Hmmm, that is the way I was thinking of doing when I decide to switch.

I wouldn't say it sucks, by the quality isn't as good as on lte or wifi. It's satisfactory for a quick call, but I wouldn't do a conference call using it.

That is exactly what I did when I first got my phone and vzw offered 450 minutes for an individual plan. I used GV with Talkatone to use VOIP instead of my minutes for short calls. It had its quirks but it was okay for me.

I just wish the tmo $30 prepaid had at least 200 or so minutes, but I think I can deal with the 100 minutes. I'm not a big talker.

If you overload your account, you can get more minutes at a cost of 10 cents per minute. So an additional 100 minutes would cost you 10 extra dollars for a total of $40 per month. Still not a bad deal considering how much you get.

This is more or less how it works. However by using a VoIP app, you can make calls using your G-Voice number without ever touching your carrier minutes.

I talked to a guy who said he had used tmobile a few years ago and the service was spotty in the St. Louis area (voice). That he didn't enjoy using his phone because of it. I told him tmo are upgrading from reading here.

I would like to know if anybody currently using tmo in the St. Louis area and how is the service? Looking at their website coverage map, it show service is pretty good.

Everyone I talk to in person do not use tmo.

i have a question for the guys using the $30 prepaid unlimited text, 5 gig throttle data, and 100 minute call plan. i bought the starter kit at walmart, but i saw on the t-mobile website that this prepaid plan can ONLY BE USED with a phone bought from walmart or the t-mobile website.

i just bought a used t-mobile htc one on ebay. will i be able to use this plan with this phone?

does anyone use this plan with the htc one? walmart doesn't even sell a t-mobile htc one.

It can be used on any device compatible with T-Mobile on a newly activated sim. If you have an already activated one on another plan, you cannot change to it. I'm using it on my Nexus 5 and originally activated it on my Nexus 4.

so if it already was activated with a sim by the previous owner, can i just take out the old sim and do a factory reset?
