Root thinking about rooting but have some questions

im kind of getting bored with my stock set up and go launcher. im wanting to give my phone more of a custom look have put some thought into rooting my dx. i am a little bit hesitant though because i am afraid of bricking it and having to pay retail for another phone. looking for input on the pros and cons of rooting and maybe some pics of the cool things i can do. all input is welcome!
 
I see no downside to rooting. You have the ability to install, modify, and use a lot of great tools to personalize the phone. The risk of ruining your phone to a brick is slim when we can sbf back to stock. Follow the instructions a lot of helpful people have provided in threads and you should have no problems. Then you can truly enjoy all the options your phone gives you through applications, battery life, and aesthetics.

I'm running ApeX 1.4 with reduced voltage. Battery life is way better than stock, phone runs smooth, and I can have the phone work the way I want it.
 
You can use ADW Launcher or Launcher pro to customize homescreen and dock settings. ROMs allow further changes with animations, keyboards, notification bars, over/under clocking, service/prop tweaks, zipalign, and a lot of other tools all included in one package. Use them both and you have a lot of options available to you! If you dont like it, revert back a recovery or sbf to stock and start fresh.
 
and with as many experts as are on here, any issue you have with rooting or ROMing should be resolved fairly quickly
 
i dont think i have ever seem someone on this forum who was completely bricked, to where they couldnt flash back, but i may be wrong, its easy to root, and easier to flash roms and install themes, its all simple, the step by step guides are here to help, the ones who have done this many times can help you.

you can ask a question everyone repeats, we dont get upset, other forums will but not android forums, every android forum i have seem has been kind of willing to help, other forums like crackberry, just bash one another.

you will enjoy it here because no matter what your problem, we can help you fix it, and then when you have done it many numerous times, you can then instruct others how to do it ^_^
 
I was scared at first but I'm starting to get the hang of it.

I feel better knowing I can just factory reset my phone unlike an iPhone and my carrier would be none the wiser to it.

Everyone here has been really helpful. No clowning just fun.

I'm a total noob.
 
im thinking im gonna root later this week when i will have a chance to make things to my liking a little bit. i already use a launcher and i like what that can do so im thinking a rom will keep me entertained with the customization options. still very apprehensive about it. a few questions first though
1. do i have to factory reset before rooting, or will everything carry over fine?
2. what are some of the best roms, leaning towards liberty or apex from what i have read
3. what are must haves after doing the whole root process?

btw i really appreciate all the help everyone is giving
 
1. apex you do not need to wipe everything if your coming from stock, liberty, i dont think you do either, but if your switching from one rom to another, you have to wipe data and cache not factory reset
2. apex and liberty are 2 of the more popular roms, but you also have darkslide which is real nice, gummyjar which is liberty with less options, rubix, fission, tranquility, etc
3. wireless tether, ad free android, titanium backup, root explorer, android terminal, shootme, DROID X BOOTSTRAP, and rom manager
 
change of plans going to root tonight if possible, and if not tomorrow. i need to know where to get the things that were listed as must haves above ^

+1 to this and just be slow and read all steps, if you have questions post them, the people here are top notch and there is so much knowledge here to assist through the good and bad

Just be sure to read the stickies. I read them over and over and then got tired of reading them then took the plunge. I don't regret one minute and now like a lot of others, am a Rom flashing hoochie, nandroids out the you know what just to see what's new and exciting.

Edit:

If you do make nandroids (from Clockwork, all these terms will come to you), make sure you name the folders on your sdcard so you know what's what. I have read that from numerous people and was like bah, I can remember, well now I have so many, I don't know what's what, so renamed the ones I've made this last few days and feel so much better.
 
what do you mean, not allowing you to do anything?

you have to give super user access to alot of things that require root, like apps you can get in the market

like it wont let me delete bloatware stuff like vz navigator and amazon mp3. also how do i create a back up of everything and not just back up a single app at a time with titanium back up?
 
yeah i noticed after a little bit that titanium backup would let me delete it. i figured out the batch thing too. where do i need to go for roms and custom themes?
 
this site has the custom roms you need, remember you are on 2.3.320
if you go to the sticky at the top of the page and look up the roms section, you will see what all is available to you, and make sure you go to the 2.3.320 section


i dont think its updated with apex v1.4 or liberty 1.5 which you can find on this forum
 
Will droid x bootstrap work instead of downloading clockwork for putting liberty on the phone? I'm still torn between liberty and apex kind of too. I feel like an uber clueless noob asking all these questions
