Root thinking about rooting but have some questions

dude i was a noob when i first came out here, so dont worry about a thing, you are doing the right thing by asking questions, and as long as you keep asking them, i will continue to answer them... if i can.
now droid x bootstrap works the same as clockwork
the only thing about rom manager that dxb(droid x bootstrap) does, is lets you download roms from it, and rename your backups
however, some roms on rom manager for dx are serriously outdated as most of us, if not all are on 2.3.320 or 2.3.340 and NOT 2.3.15
those roms can put you in a bootloop, thats why it is best to ask questions.
so in a way you dont need rom manager if you have dxb, but then again its your choice, i use both, cause for some reason apex is not allowing me to boot into recovery with dxb, so i have to use rom manager to install files. so if you have any other question please ask ^_^ otherwise we dont know how we can help you

Correction i am now booting into recovery with droid x bootsrap ^_^

Is there anything that I HAVE to do before installing a rom? Also how do I create a specific backup file for everything? I have everything backed up with titanium backup but I don't know how to make one big file of that

before you install a rom, make a backup of your current system.
2 ways to do this.

1- Reboot Recovery (in Droid X Bootstrap) just scroll down til you see backup and restore, and then select backup
2- Rom Manager just go down to Backup current rom and give it a simple name to know that its "stock" and thats all you gotta do

to install roms, you must open droid x bootstrap, and hit Bootsrap Recovery (allow superuser access) and hit ok
then open rom manager, download your desired rom that coincides with your version number which should be 2.3.320 or 2.3.340
coming from stock no need to wipe data and cache, going from rom to rom, you need to wipe data and cache

if you are going to download the rom to your computer and then transfer them to your phone(just as easy)
you need to open droid x bootstrap and reboot recovery
install from zip
and choose zip from sdcard and there ya go
when you are flashing a rom from another rom wipe data and cache and thats all you gotta do bud ^_^

my mind is racing with possibilities

:)

you'll be hooked like the rest of us are, you'll become one with your phone and trying a new rom and getting the phone setup to your liking will be minutes vs what it is the first few times. Prepare for your phone to take over your life :) lol

Not trying to thread jack here but been seriously considering rooting my X I got this weekend. I was looking into getting on ApeX 1.4, what I have been reading is making a lot of sense but somethings still confuse me, I guess most of it will make since when I get into it.

1. Do I have to download and run the z4root to be able to install ApeX? I am currently on the stock ROM with the 2.3.340 update OTA. So not sure what I need to prepare myself for the root.

2. Me being on the stock ROM, I do not have to reset my phone or delete anything like apps before rooting, correct?

3. I found the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap in the market ($2.00), do I buy that before or after rooting? Also, whats something I can use to backup my contacts and apps, I don't have many but just to make it easier.

4. IF I wanted to go back to stock ROM and decided I do not want to keep my phone rooted, how hard is that to do, I haven't really found much on this yet, still doing LOTS of research before I jump into this but wanna get some questions answered first.

5. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

the whole un rooting thing is something i have discovered since rooting, z4 gives you the option to one click unroot in the exact same way that you rooted it to begin with. im having fun with it just being able to manage my apps better. just scratching the surface of what can be done!

alright i backed everything up and did like what you said and now i am stuck in a liberty bootloop and i dont know how to get it unstuck. it says there is mismatch when i try to apply my backup!

sorry bro im usually asleep from 11:30pm-7:00am so i dont get messages at that time :( i can answer questions at work so woo, but i see you got your problem fixed, i should have mentioned the data wipe with liberty, its the only rom that requires it, but when moving from rom to rom, you need to wipe data and cache, and if you have titanium backup, your apps and stuff should begin to download automatically in the market.

yeah my phone is working now, although titanium isnt prompting anything to download in the market. it does help by giving me a list though. a few questions again though
1. since i did have a backup file saved, but it just wouldnt open is there anyway that i can get all my old stuff back ie pics and other non app stuff?
2. can i ever go back to stock?
3. where are the battery life patch and the toolbox thing because if im gonna start all over this thing is gonna be exactly the way that i want it lol

you can restore your previous save point. basically open rom manager or droid x bootstrap
from bootstrap reboot recovery and backup/restore
and hit restore and select the file

from rom manager
open dx bootstrap
hit bootstrap recovery
hit ok
open rom manager
manage and restore backups
and there ya go ^_^

you can go back to stock you can sbf and be completely stock, no trace of root or roms except whats on your sd card

battery life patch for liberty is here
Increase Battery Life? You can help Team Liberty! - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

the toolbox for liberty is in your app drawer you can also download the newest version from the market, just search liberty toolbox

I tried out ApeX 1.4 last night for a bit, didn't go too deep as it was my first root, but I wanted to check out the steps on getting back to stock and it is even easier than rooting the phone.

1. You have to run the bootstrap and go to the backup and recovery selection and select recover from there. To get back to my original rooted state I just selected that file from there.

2. Yes you can go back to stock(unrooted) as I just did 2 minutes ago just to see the process. All I did was clear data/cache, run recover to the original stock rooted backup you made right after rooting, then run z4. Allow it to get superuser access and once it has access it will give you the option to reroot or unroot. Just select unroot. Once it completes, restart and make sure the superuser app is gone and voila!

3. Maybe someone else knows that question but I hope what I gave helped you out a bit :D

I just did my first root last night and I feel like I have so much weight lifted off my shoulders now that I know how easy it is to root/unroot. Now I am sure like most of you, I am going to go crazy with roms and seeing what I can do. I am excited!!!

yeah i would think that would work well but the backup that i made for some reason wont work. it says its missing an md5 or something. i know there has to be a way to go back to stock without a back up, you know a worst case scenario hail mary

Yes you can sbf to stock or use the maderstok zip .....if you made a backup and renamed it bit included spaces in the rename the md5 wont match .....example, when I rename it would look something like this
APEX_CUSTOM ....notice the underscore ....no space

+1

easiest thing for him to do to get back to stock though is sbf, and once you have done it so much it takes about 10-15 minutes to sbf back to stock, and then you wait for your apps to reinstall, then you can reroot with z4root and install maderstocks update to be at the correct OTA by verizon

Exactly but now that we have a full 2.3.340 sbf he should be up to date with just a sbf

so we actually do now have the full 340 sbf, thats good news!

That's good, I was reading through the thread that had it but didn't finish and wasn't sure if they did have the full version.

Back to rooting, I successfully rooted to ApeX, unrooted back to stock and now am rooted to Liberty 1.5, so far I really like it, but now it is only taking me about 15-20 minutes to do full backups and root and install them. Thanks everyone for all of the help and info posted on here, I am forever in debt to you pro's :D

well one day you will be the one giving others advice ^_^ just remember everyone was a noob at some point, and we all got to start out somewhere, i dont mind answering the same questions every other post, some people dont want to have to read through, some may have a different situation, thats why i would encourage people to private message me and i will answer there question asap ^_^

I dont think i added any spaces but when it goes to the boot menu when it shows its backing everything up it hours almost all the way through and then it says something about my sd card. Is there anything you have to do before you make a backup?
