Root Thinking of going back to basics.

Just want to get some feedback before I do. OK, so I rooted my phone a while back and am running clockwrkmod, set CPU, and the 2.632.9 slayher kernel on the 2.2.1 FRG83D build. I am getting the new update indicator for 2.2.2 and am considering going back to stock ROM and settings because so far I have noticed almost no increased performance after many suggested tweaks to the CPU settings and in some cases there seems to be a lag. The only thing I can say is that the set CPU lets me extend battery life by scaling down at certain times. However as far as I have read to get the new update I will have to go back to stock then re-root and as far as I have seen it doesn't seem worth it really. I am sure there is much functionality I have access to while rooted by I don't use it I guess. The only thing I like is the ability to tether which I haven't used either but like the option. So before I go back I wanted to get some feedback here; am I missing something, some setting, or anything that makes staying rooted worth it or is it perhaps for those who use the additional functionality? Honestly I did it to overclock and get better performance but as I mentioned that has been rather negligible at best. Thoughts?

Perhaps showing my ignorance on this one but how does the custom ROM interact with the new updates? I am referring more to them being compatible with the new builds.
@SNeitzel As far as a Kernel and overclocking I already have the Slayher kernel and SetCPU installed which is for overclock; is the functionality different with a custom ROM.

they roll up the updates into the rom so dont worry... the best experince i had is with ss 4.96 and 1.1ghz low volt from chevyno1

I also was stock, but rooted, for a while and I finally flashed a custom ROM and found it much smoother and more stable. I am using Peter's Gingerbread ROM (the second one linked in Snietzel's post, and am liking it a lot. Also, if you are getting the "redraw" issue (where the screen goes blank for a bit after you exit an app and it takes a while for the icons to come back), there is a fix for that.

I, like you, wanted a "stock"-type install, but with better performance. I found exactly what I was looking for in Peter's stock gingerbread ROM linked above by SNeitzel. I wasn't keen on the kernel he wrote for that build being locked at 600Mhz, so I downloaded his 1.1Ghz kernel and flashed that- found here http://bit.ly/est7HA

The gingerbread look is very nice- and the 1.1 kernel makes my D1 just FLY. I have yet to experience a single issue. Can't wait for a 2.3.3 BB to drop.

I didn't think the stock ROM would allow a different kernel... Am I incorrect?
Can you set the max and min CPU speed in SetCPU with the Slayher kernel? What speed does SetCPU show you are running at?

You can flash the kernel only to the stock ROM just fine...

From what I've read, if you go to a 'totally' stock and unrooted (2.2.2/FRG83G) Droid, you will not be happy. In fact, from my reads, those who have not rooted their A855 phones with 2.2.x/Froyo on them are unhappy.

Those that have suggested custom roms are pretty much right on. I rooted my A855 back in Dec 2009 and have had a custom rom on it since then and have never unrooted it, nor looked back. Only now with the 2.3.x/Gingerbread roms am I seeing some REAL drawbacks.

good luck

When I saw the title of this post, I was sure you were meaning going back to the basics and getting a dinosaur Nokia or something... :)

Like was mentioned it installs fine on stock ROM. I have set CPU at 1000 MHz max.

Tell ya what, that was one of the best phones I ever had. I mean I couldn't go back because of the features of the newer phones but without question the best quality phone ever. I washed and dried that thing (twice) and it never skipped a beat.
