Root Thinking Of Rooting...... Please Help.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here :)

Wonder if you could please help me.
With all this talk of rooting and custom roms i'm thinking of having a go.

Before I go any further I'm not that tech minded so I would ask that any replies be made in a simple sort of format... Thanks :)

I have a Htc Desire... The bog standard one (not hd) etc

I've toyed about with ADW launcher and also paid for and downloaded SPB 3D shell but it uses alot of my storage with widgets etc.

I've seen some cracking video's on youtube of peoples rooted phones and custom roms and i'd like to do the same to my handset :)

I've seen a web site called unrevoked offering to root the handset...

Wondered if anyone knows if the web site is legit and that it works on the Htc desire?

Also once i've managed to root my handset could someone please point me in the right direction for roms and how to install them.

The only thing I've ever done is modded my SE satio a couple of years ago with a sence mod.... (took me a while to do) lol

Any help, info and tips would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Lee :)

I went ahead and moved this for you. :) Someone should definitely be able to answer your questions here.

Hi Lee,

We have some FAQ's and guides here. If you are still on Android 2.2 (Froyo), yes unrevoked is the way to go.

Please read our Rooting FAQ (in the "all about rooting" sticky thread) and then see what questions you have which remain unanswered. It is pretty comprehensive though.

Hi Lee,

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but you'll have to use another method to root if you're already on 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) as the unRevoked method is for older builds.

Go to www.revolutionary.io and read through the guide thoroughly on how to root your phone. Although it is apparently more complicated its still relatively easy to do (I have only used this method). There is also a guide on www.theunlockr.com with a video showing a step by step guide on how to do this using the revolutionary method. Again, I'd watch the video first, read the step by step instructions and ensure you gave all the prerequisite tools downloaded before hand.

One last thing, the guides SUroot referred to you are probably the best you'll get on this topic. I'd read through them all to get a good understanding on what you are doing as opposed to following a step-by-step blindly (speaking from experience!).

Good luck!

Thanks for that Jon,

Just had a quick look and erm  looks quite complicated for me.

I'm wishing now I didn't do the gingerbread thing :(

Unrevocked looked like it did it all for you and one thing I don't wanna do is brick my phone

P.s Don't know why its saying unhappy at the top....

I'm VERY HAPPY so far with the responses

its no more complicated than unrevoked.
failure rate is extremely small and once you have s-off you can root with ease

Lee, have a read through the guides faqs and glossaries supplied in the sticky to this section. I don't want to pass the buck (or a hypocrite!), but its all there.

I rooted without fully understandung what I was doing and came a bit stuck several times. The problem was I hadn't read the guides properly, or rather take the time to understand what I was doing. I am not experimenting until I feel 100% comfortable I know what to do. Take a note from my book :-)

The guide(s) I linked you to are simple to follow if you take the time to systematically read the steps and watch the video whilst doing so. If you don't understand why you have to do a step, it may be worth while researching this. Of course, it also comes down to your technical competence and how "tech savvy" you are.

S-off is security off. With that you can install a custom recovery and hence flash a rooted rom of your choice. Sounds scary and a lot to take in, but just keep reading the guides here and at revolutionary over and over. It will make much more sense when you actually do it.
