Thinking of rooting

Hi guys im coming to you all for advice as i am seriously considering rooting, even with the official 2.3.4 update via kies i am still noticing incredible battery drain. which seems to only happen when wifi is off im and on mobile data. even at night when phone is not used for 8 hours or more with mobile data on im losing 30-40% battery.
so my question is what CFW and kernel combination is best for battery conservation?

i have tried several launcher apps and have to say im more of a fan of go launcher than ADW or Launcher pro so a cfw that has a go launcher style would be great.

sorry if none of that made sense but i dont even know what im asking..:(
 
Are you in an area of particularly poor or intermittent 3G reception? It sounds like the radio chipset is having to work hard to maintain connection to the network. Have a look at Settings/About phone/Battery usage and tap the graph - is the Phone signal bar either pale beige or broken?

thats the thing im very a signal mast (about 1 mile or so away), so i usually have excellent reception.
I did forget to mention that since the 2.3.4 update i have noticed a few times when the phone has been left to idle for a long time,upon wake up i have no signal and for some reason when i manually try to connect back to my provider it wont. so its a restart only thing.

unfortunately i cant post my battery usage right now as its not typical usage as ive been on a trains all day with signal loss. but the results from the *#*#1234#*#* is

PDA: I9100XWKI4

CSC: I9100XEUKH2

thanks SLUG, still very unsure of the whole rooting and cfw installation process is there any definitive and chronological guides out there as all i have found are very segmented bits and pieces and they all say to do different things which is very worrying?

wow im gonna miss swype :confused:

There is a lot out there and sometimes you have to look around for the next step but it's a good learning process. I installed Revolution ROM today and it wasn't too nerving (except during the actual install). If you like I can PM you exactly what I did. Also, I've still got swype, and I think you'll find that completely losing swype is hard to do.

No problem mate happy to help! We can call it Kie's 10 steps to rooting for n00bs. I should add that I only learned it 2 days ago, but it works!
 
Lol... there has been no noob as silly as me ever.
i managed to backup everything with titanium backup but clockwork mod (rom manager) recovery mod isnt backing up my rom.
i go to backup current rom, use the backup name as the suggested current date. then when it restarts after running for a few seconds i get

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed

(these show in red)
and the process aborts, im guessing its cause im currently on the XWKI4 insecure kernel, is it okay to flash the secure kernel on and try the backup again?

I'm pretty sure rom manager isn't compatible with CF Root. The CWM program you get with CF Root will do the backup just fine.
 
huh all i saw when rooted was the superuser app and thats it. i installed titanium backup myself and then thought clockworkmod would backup firmware?

i used the insecure kernel CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip -
found on xda developers and also used odin and super1click. i dont know where i have gone wrong but i dont seem to have cf root, but i have superuser and titanium backup working.

when installing i didnt unzip the rar file as odin didnt seem to recognise the "Zimage" file that was produced when unziped. so is it because of that or have i just made some boo boo and just lucky i didnt brick my phone?
 
If you still are having battery problems, and if you dont wanna install a new ROM, I highly recommend buying Titanium Backup Pro. Then you can freeze(or uninstall) useless apps running in the background.

Gave me superb battery time.

Here is a list over wasteable and unwasteable apps on the galaxy s2 if needed.

You don't need Super One-Click.

You appear to have rooted the phone, hence BusyBox, SuperUser and CWM. Then you seem to have unrooted your phone, which is why, although CWM is installed, it doesn't work.

To root your phone correctly, follow the steps in this guide:-

[08.10.2011][CF-Root v4.3] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers

Actually I think he's saying he only has Superuser; CWM never installed when he flashed CF-Root. I think I left some information out here. When you download the CF-Root kernel, unzip with winzip and that's the file you use in PDA (it's the same filename as the file you downloaded but ends with .tar). You don't unzip a second time to get the zImage file.
 
Thanks i got CWM now, i think you are both kinda right but i have to admit utter stupidity on my part. i followed the chainfire method but i didnt use a chainfire rom its seems.
hope im not frustrating anyone yet but is the CWM meant to back up to internal SD card or External SD card, as im only getting it to backup to internal which seems worrying?
what CFW/Kernel combination would you guys suggest for good battery life?

CWM backs up to the internal SD card by default as this is not affected when flashing, etc; and should be perfectly safe.

To save space and in case of phone loss or damage, I sometimes save these nandroid (CWM) backups to a folder on my PC.

I would suggest something like Revolution ROM to start with, see hawker's post here:-

OMG so far so good i've just put the siyah 1.8 stable kernel on, havent put custom rom on yet but have to say i have noticed a slight speed up when changing screens. so far so good. but to say im holding my breath and praying to the heavens is an understatement.

Well i've come a long way and bungled it all the way so call me the "mr bean" of android users. i've installed revolution rom 2.7.1 which i have to say looks nice with all the blues and the nice animated boot screen, but did anyone else have issues with the kitchen, none of the themes i try to download ever seem to install :( so i cant get it to look all jazzed up and nice like everyone else ?
