Thinking of trading for Eris...

Also remember, the Moto Droid just came out. It may have a lot of quirks and problems but the potential for tons of goodies is still out there.

Btw OP, if you didn't know, you can make shortcuts on your homescreen for contact list which would make things a bit more simple for you.

I have the same issue with the battery door falling off easily, kind of annoying.

As far as the Sense UI, I came from a Touch Pro 2 that I loaded Sense on and when I went to the Droid I thought I would miss it. I like being able to modify the screen with the info I want. I found the Sense UI lacking in options as to what I wanted to display where. The Droid isn't as pretty as the Sense UI but functionally it's light years ahead.

With the Droid now rooted, and the rate that new applications are coming out I'm willing to bet there are going to be some nice home screen apps / UI's not to far off that will greatly increase the aesthetics of the Droid.

I played with both at the store before I bought my Droid. Didn't like typing at all on the Eris. I actually rarely use the physical keyboard on the Droid because the large screen size and keyboard layout I can fly typing on the virtual keyboard. Better hardware, screen, rooted and a much larger community. I'd stick with the Droid but it all comes down to personal preference.

And, if they do push 2.0 in the coming week(s) like rumored, that will be part of it..

My best friend works for VZW. I bout the droid for myself and my girlfriend wanted the eris. I called him the other day about our bill and he told me they were pushing up the 2.0 release for eris. If his info is right we should see one very soon like this week. But then again we all know how that line of business is. Some times they spread the rumors just to get a feel how it would effect their sales and customer satisfaction.

Telltime - not any real info you've overlooked but if you aren't feeling the love for the Droid after three weeks, you probably aren't going to. I was exactly where you were last week with the Storm 2. I really wanted that phone and really wanted to love it, but I just couldn't so I traded it for the Droid. Took me less than 24 hrs to fall in love with the Droid. But the guys over at BB forums acted like I was some sort of troglodyte who wasn't trying to get used to the Storm 2. But I made the switch and am extremely happy with it.

Not everyone likes the same phone. That's why we have choices. If you ask here, most people are going to tell you you're making the wrong choice because most people here have and want the Droid. If you think the Eris will be better for you, then go for it. You will be happier in the long run and you are the one who needs to me.

Well, i was trying the Eris, and don't get me wrong, it's a great phone with it's design and screens, especially for an android 1.6 phone (not implying anything bad). However, before I got the Droid and i was trying it, I couldn't let go of it. Thank goodness the store had 3 droids out, or else there would have been a line to try it.
The physical keyboard sold me out since i despise onscreen keyboards (usually in accurate with fast typing).
The battery life also improved greatly with 2.0.1. I was at 30% battery at the beginning of the day and it lasted 15 hours under light usage, which was amazing to me. Doing, the math, the Droid can push for 2 1/2 days with light usage, which is amazing for me.
About your call problem, you can always make a folder on your screen and put in contact shortcuts, which gives auto calls that person when you press it, just a bit of info.

As the OP, I thought I'd do a follow-up. I did end up switching the Droid for the Eris... Now before you go hatin' me (and GrandMaster... I still sat at the Adult table at Thanksgiving... yeah I saw that other post LOL) hear me out. I think I would have been happy keeping the Droid, and like GrandMaster said, it's a win/win, but in the end I'm happy with my switch. Here's why...

There are some definite pros and cons for each phone. I would recommend either phone, but for me I PREFER the HTC Eris.

Having had both now for about a month, here is my final analysis. It's actually similar to the first, but there are a few additions.

On the Pro side of the Droid (or negative of the Eris, depending on how you look at it):

- The screen on the Droid is amazing and wins over any phone I currently know of on the market. The Eris one is not bad, and is still a huge upgrade from any blackberry other than the storm, but it's smaller and less detailed than the Droid. Compare it more in quality to the iPhones, only still a tad smaller (but that makes it more comfortable to hold than either, IMO).

- The Droid is running 2.0 (and the Beta GPS turn by turn directions that goes with it) and the Eris runs 1.5. Rumors still abound that the Eris will be receiving 2.0 the first quarter of 2010, but as of today, it's still 1.5 for the Eris. If/when Eris is updated, hopefully this will be moot. But honestly, the turn by turn GPS feature, while neat, is not a necessity for me. I can still get all the directions, the addresses, street level views, etc. I just don't get that GPS function (and I have a Garmin, so again, no big deal for me). While I had the Droid, I did use this feature a couple of times and it wasn't perfect for me. The GPS signal would get lost and have to play catch up a few times and the voice was not pleasant. I ended up preferring to use Google on the Droid and then plugging the address into my Garmin. Again, I did this while I still had the Droid, so no loss for me w/the Eris (but it was cool).

- I DO NOT see a noticable time difference in the processor speed. Yes, I realize that hardware wise, the processor on the Droid is faster, but the GUI is more efficient on the Eris. Is the Droid faster? Yes. Is it THAT much faster? No. And argue all you want, but as a Software Engineer, I attribute that to the GUI. But a small + to the Droid.

- How the Android Market is displayed. I think this has to do with 2.0 vs. 1.5, but am not sure. It could be differences in the browser, but again I just don't know. But the Droid display of the market place was better (again, in my opinion). I liked that you could seperate paid vs. free apps and the Eris' display does not have that. Also, in the Droid's display of the market, there were often screenshots. This isn't so on the Eris. Sometimes there is a link to a developers page that has screenshots, but it's an extra step that just wasn't there on the Droid. I'm hoping this is a 2.0 vs. 1.5 thing, but even not it's a minor thing for me. But again a + on the Motorola side.

- 2.0 apps. not available in the Android Market. This one is obvious. But there is one app (a game) that I really liked (Battleship). Again, hopefully this will be moot if/when Eris upgrades to 2.0, but even if they don't it was just a game. And some smart developer would likely develop it for 1.5...

- I liked the unlock screen better for the Droid. It was more stylish, and I liked the slide right to unlock as opposed to slide down... don't know why but I did. I also loved the slide left to silence. Eris does not have this. You either have to use the volume keys on the side of the phone to silence or open the home screen and silence (which is what I do... I put a silence all widget on my main screen, so it's very quick, but still two steps vs. Droid's one). Again, no big deal, but something I did like about the Droid.

Now for the Pros on the Eris (or Cons for the Droid in my book):

- The BIGGEST deal and the one thing that made all the above SO minor for me is the sheer ergonomics of the phone. I know this is personal preference and not "fact," but the Droid was just uncomfortable for me. It was heavy in my front pocket (where I often carry my phone) and the shape of it also made it uncomfortable to carry. Snap on cases made it even worse, as they made the phone bigger and were in two parts because of the sliding keyboard. The Eris has great hand feel and the snap on case I got is awesome. It has a hard side for the back that slides into a belt clip for when I want to carry it on my belt of clip it to a pocket/backpack,etc.

- I really like having the physical keys for the phone in the Eris. And the trackball is awesome (and "familiar" since I moved from a BB Curve) for the fine placement of the cursor when texting. The Droid did have that mouse pad thingy (I know that's not the technical term :-)), but I got to where I never used the sliding keyboard anyway, and I prefer the trackball.

- Ergonomics...

- Physical key placement is much better on the Eris. Namely I HATED where the "wake-up/sleep" button was on the Droid (top right)... or the Volume buttons (top right side)... take your pick, but they were way too close, and I always (and I mean ALWAYS) accidentally adjusted the volume with the way I intuitively held the Droid. Not a problem on the Eris, and I find the physical call end button, which is also the wake-up/sleep button just downright makes sense. It's easy. And just like a regular mobile phone, I can press the physical send button and my call log is launched. I didn't realize how much I would miss this when I first chose the Droid that doesn't have any physical phone buttons. And yes, I know there are widgets to add for this functionality on the Droid, but that physical button is darned easy to locate, and again, familiar. Just makes sense.

- Contact list has a last name first option... Yes, I realize that I could have "tricked" the Droid by simply loading the names how I wanted, but I like that you can choose with the Eris. Also, I simply don't remember and maybe Droid had this, but I can load a phone number in my Eris without loading it in my G-Mail account. I like this for some business contacts and don't remember being able to do this for the Droid.

- Also on the contact list, the Eris has a "My Contact" card. The Droid made you load yourself as a "regular" contact. This didn't bother some folks I spoke with in other forums, but it bothered me... I hated logging into G-Mail and seeing myself as a contact. Seemed redundant. I got asked by several folks why load yourself into your own phone in the first place. Well, there is a fantastic app called Bump for sharing contact information quickly and to use it, you have to have your contact info. loaded. Again, with Eris, it's just a more streamline and intuitive approach than I thought it was in the Droid.

- Did I say Ergonomics already?

- The intuitive texting in the Eris is amazing. I really thought I'd miss the physical keyboard which is one reason I chose the Droid in the first place. Then I tried the Eris. Let me tell you... type without looking and the most garbled garbage you typed will "correct" itself to just the word you thought you were typing ALL THE TIME. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's even easier than my BB Keyboard. I like it that much...

- GUI on Eris is cool... It's a gee-whiz kind of thing, and there was an App for it for the Droid, but that pinch-zoom is cool. Also, the e-mail and text apps. w/the Eris GUI are awesome. I love "flipping" through to find the message I want before launching the app. Reminds me of MS Preview or Mac Stacks. Just plain neat (though I do wish they were a bit smaller - like 1/2 page instead of a full page). And the frame placement of widgets is awesome w/the Eris 'GUI.

- Finally the flip-clock/weather station. I liked the look of this App so much that when I had the Droid I purchased the one that looked like it from the Android Market (so I obviously still have that). But I didn't know the one on the Eris did so much more... I didn't even know it until I saw a video on youtube when I was still doing comparisons... The clock ones are no big deal to me. They both had an alarm clock which I like, but with the Eris' "proprietary" one, you can do all kinds of time zones, countdowns, etc. But the Eris proprietary weather one is neat. You can load a whole bunch of cities and then flip through them. Great for planning trips.

- Finally, I'll say it one last time because for me, it makes all the other things go away... the sheer ergonomics of the Eris were better for me. I am just more comfortable with this phone in my hand, on my hip, or in my pocket, so I will be happier carrying and using it.

That's it! Thanks to all those who replied in helping me with my decision. It wasn't easy and both are great phones (really loving the Droid market!). Hopefully in a couple of years when I'm up for renewal, there will be an even better Droid phone available.

[P.S. - Don't know how this happened, but a HUGE surprise/error when I made the switch... I made my "Droid" purchase over the internet, so my $100 rebate applied instantly making the phone $199. Then I got another $50 off for either my new every two or a govt. discount since I'm on Active Duty in the military. Can't remember, but I think it was the new every two. But when I got to the store and did the exchange the refund came up as $199 (the cost of the Eris prior to the $100 rebate) - the $50 again (a wash, but I used it to purchase a 16GB card for the Eris). But the kicker was that I still got the rebate form. I questioned this with the sales rep. and they even called over a store manager, but they both insisted the codes on everything was valid. So basically I got the Eris for free.]

And I forgot to mention I also liked that I was able to return the holster for the Droid and car charger. I purchased another holster for the same price for the Eris, but the car charger I had from my BB (mini USB) works on the Eris as opposed to the micro USB on the Droid. I hear the talk of the "industry standard" going to micro USB for all mobile phone chargers, but I'm not holding my breath. And I'll need a new phone in a couple of years anyway...

And I really did appreciate everyone's feedback. Thanks to all.

Well I tried both phones out when I bought it release date and I was just awed by the Droid...and thought the Eris was good but not great. So now last week I went back to the VZW store a month and a half later....to try out the Eris again because I saw alot of people were switching and I just wanted to see what advantages it had over the Droid.

Heres my opinion:
Either it was the display model their or its on every Eris but the browser was MUCH MUCH slower than my Droids. Basically I went to NYTIMES.com (Mobile) and Droid loaded in like 5-6 seconds. The Eris was done at about 30 seconds. Then I went to Engadget and on the Droid it took like 15 sec and on the Eris maybe 50 sec. Not to bag the Eris or anything but with the slower speed and IMO the multitouch was pretty laggy and not snappy. I mean Sense UI is nice but it doesnt really do anythign special besides some widgets. Besides form factor, I can't really see the Eris topping the Droid, I just can't. I mean if Verizon thought the Eris was better than the Droid, I think they wouldnt of paid millions for their ad campagin on the Droid. Again Just my opinion, Are all Erises (Plural of Eris? IDK!) slower compared to the Droid and laggy?

I assure you it was the multi-used in store model of the Eris that was really slow. I have the Eris and it is pretty fast. I can not say that it is faster than the Moto Droid, but I will know in a few days because I ordered the Moto Droid just to compare before making the full 2 year commitment.

Like I said, my Eris is not noticeably slower than the Droid... Arguments can be made, side by sides done, but for my use, the Eris is plenty fast.

As far as the advertising campaign... Verizon didn't pay for more advertisements for the Droid vs. the HTC Eris, Motorola did. And the Droid is a great phone, I admit. But I still prefer the Eris.

And just to head off one other thing I forgot to mention in the comparison... Battery life. Yes, the Droid is better, but the Eris' is much better than I thought. I use my bluetooth, make moderate calls, turn on wi-fi when I'm at home, and use the phone and web moderately (not heavily, but certainly not lightly). At the end of the day, I easily still have 1/2 to 3/4 battery. And it's a quick charge. I'd say about 25% quicker than the Droid, but that's a non-scientific (yet educated) guess.

Again, not trying to bash anyone who prefers the Droid. Just putting this out there for information... or deciding whether they think the Droid is $100 better.

I hated my Droid but when I upgraded to the Droid 2 (moto) I loved it. They corrected some of the things I hated about Droid, like butt-calls when it supposedly locked...it even bought a $86. app in my pocket that I couldn't return! That is all fixed with the Droid2 (my dad always said don't be the guinea pig, wait till "it" improves. It truely is a superior product.

I love seeing 9 month old threads revived :p

My dad always said that tomorrow there will be something better so get the best one you can today. Just kidding...my dad would never say something like that :D

Enjoy the D2!

It even bought a $86. app in my pocket that I couldn't return!

come on dude... $86?????

are you being honest or are you trying to trash the droid because you have something better?

that sounds ridiculous!!!

i would have someone give me my money back!!!!

I've never been more serious about something than this. The ERIS is complete crap. It is slow, buggy, and has less features than the Droid. If you are thinking about switching to a phone without a physical keyboard, go with the Incredible of the X. ERIS is a sorry excuse for a phone.

I couldn't have said it better myself! After 4 Eris, I am going to Droid. Eris is slow, laggy and plain bites. Plus it is not getting official Froyo, so you will have to root to get it. If you get Eris, you would be sorry you did. It is a joke. I can't wait to get my droid and chunk this thing in the return box and say good riddance!

Problems I have had with all of mine: (same on all phones)

Dropped calls, no signal in places it should, takes 30+ seconds to dial a number sometimes. Internet pages take forever to load, not getting texts until an hr after they are sent. Trackball causing screen to scroll all the way right.

Trust me, if you get the Eris, you will realize it is nothing more than a battery powered (which drains fast) paper weight.

I can't imagine having to go back to an Eris. It's just not made for the average user, despite it having a very entry-level price. It's a feature phone with a trackball, or it at leat feels that way with the 528 MHZ processor it has. Plus, not having a dedicated GPU at this point (late-2009) was a dead giveaway that it was still living in the same era as the G1, the one that started it all over a year ago, and was not a very progressive phone. No matter what the somewhat-sophisticated feel the exterior rubbery thing gave it.

After buying the Eris, I learned that you get what you pay for, or to at least do the research before you buy. Never listen to your VZW rep, unless he's telling you he's discounting something. That's just about the only thing they got right with me in three years of being with them.

Hey everyone...I tried to remind people that this is a 9+ month old thread but doesn't look like my previous post helped

So before people start bashing the OP for considering switching to the Eris (back in 2009)...

Thread locked :)
