Root This newb needs help, please. PLEASE.

Hello.

I'm slowly pulling out my hair over this, and I know this is going to make most of you laugh at me, but I'll take it just for the help.

I'm a TOTAL newb to Android. I am developing software for the iOS and now working on the same software for Android, so I was donated graciously a couple of Android devices. I THINK this phone was rooted, and it seems some features are missing. I need this phone to be back to STOCK, to test my apk's on it. I held the power and volume button in, and did a factory restore, and I'm not sure it worked. The app Super User is still installed so I think It's still rooted.

I'm looking to update the system software to the latest, and I can't find the "System Update" ANYWHERE.

Here is what the phone is running. How do I get this back to factory stock, the easiest and quickest way? Also, I am on a Mac. I'm not sure if this matters.

HTC EVO 4G
Model Number: PC36100
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version: 2.6.37.6-cyanogenmod-01504-gdc28eacshade@toxygene#1
Mod Version: gingerbread-evo-deck-1.2.1
Build number: GRJ22

Thank you!

Paul

Welcome Daremo!
Glad to have you here!
So you want to bring the device back to stock?
We just need to find out what the bootloader screen says.
So, with the phone off, push and hold the volume down button and at the same time push and hold the power button...that will bring up the bootloader screen.

Just post back here everything written on that screen and we can go from there.

Also, in the Sticky at the top of this forum, is a complete unrooting guide if you so desire but it was written for a windows computer.

I'll have to find out what needs to be changed so it will work on a Mac. :)

Hey Daremo,

I would start here with this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/655895-complete-unrooting-guide-evo-4g.html

and then ask any specific questions that you have about the process. It's (in my opinion) easier to answer specific questions about the process.

While I haven't rooted this exact device (i should since I have one with a broken screen), I may not be able to answer every question but I will do my best to help where I can. I do have an Evo 3d (rooted) and I'm very comfortable there, so it's not like I'm completely out of the Evo loop. ;)

Edit: Ninja'd by the guide author himself. You're in good hands. *Quietly sneaks away* :p

Thanks! OK,here's the bootloader screen info...

O.k....now, I think some of the things you are missing is the availability to access the ## codes using the dialer because you are on an AOSP rom.
With a Sense based rom, you have that ability and the easiest way to bring this phone up to date is to either flash the updated Sense rom.

Or, you can totally unroot it, and then update it with the OTA updates.
Don't try to update it with the OTA updates while rooted...that will make the phone act wonky.

So, what features are missing, that you need?

system update is for anything OTA is completely gone. I want to upgrade to the latest software to test the apps on, so basically, I really need to unroot this, so it's stock, and remove any potential conflicts with the development apps running correctly. I'm having my iOS app "ported" over to Android, and there's already some wonky things I'm getting that he is not, so he suggested I upgrade, and I can't do that, so the best thing for me, is a stock, bland and boring Android device. haha

Here goes nothing... haha! I'll let you know how it goes, and thanks for all the help!

EDIT: Success! This worked, and it's back to a boring stock phone. haha

Thanks for all your help Mike, you saved my MUCH headache.

Glad it worked. :D

Curious, did you use your Mac or did you use a Windows PC?
