Took my mom to see this film on mothers day and loved it. It had a much better plot than I ever gave it credit for. And the cast was also excellent except for one person who I didn't expect to have a problem with but... oh Lord forgive me guys, as I can't believe I'm typing this even as I'm typing it but... somehow Natalie Portman didn't fit her role in this movie to me?
And I say that as one of her biggest fans. Ever since 'Leon : The Professional' she's been one of my favorite actresses, if not my very favorite. And during the trailers before Thor started they showed the new Luc Besson movie 'Columbiana' and I thought, "hey if you're going to film a movie about a chick who saw her parents murdered and seeks revenge... why the hell not make it about Mathilda and use Natalie Portman? We've all been dying for that movie to come out. I mean, Mathilda saw her parents murdered too"...
But anyways, I really liked Thor... even more than I had anticipated. I went expecting to see a good action movie, but it was even better than that IMO. Visuals were incredible. The weak spot in the movie to me was unfortunately Portman. Not that she did a bad acting job, it's not that at all. Part of it was, I just don't see her as an astronomy geek. That was a little hard for me to swallow. But the even bigger problem was, Thor is a God, and Gods don't fall in love with toothpicks!
And I think Natalie is as hot as they come, she is definately my type in every way. But a God needs a woman who's going to give him a big, strong, Godly son. He needs him a woman with 'birthing hips' to bring his successor into this 'realm'!
Thors mother for instance was cast perfectly. Rene Russo is beautiful, yet strong and voluptuous... you could see her giving birth to a God. Natalie... she's too petite to attract the attention of a God. Thor would leave her to mortal men like myself, and I would be forever greatful to him for it!
So that was the biggest hole in the movie for me. That and his band of friends were played rather cartoony at times. LOVED the gate keeper, he was badass! And no one could have played Odin better than Anthony. I swear that man is the most versitile actor on the planet. I mean as old and feable as he was in his last movie, 'The Rite', he was very believable as a strong, formidable God in Thor.
I also loved the cameo by Hawkeye, and the reference to 'Iron Man' when the Guardian was sent to earth by Loki and Agent Coulson asks, "Is that one of Starks"? LOL, I had a good belly laugh at that one!
I very much recommend this movie to anyone, expecially comic enthusiasts!
