Thoughts on Bionic vs. Upcoming Devices?

I can always sell the Bionic or upgrade on another line, so if the Prime knocks it out of the park, I'll execute one of my options.

The good thing is, I really like this phone and can now afford myself more patience, when it comes to any of the coming releases.

I was just thinking about this very topic this morning, so thanks BenDroid for posting it. I love everything about the Bionic except for the screen. I was watching Blood Sport on both my Bionic and my old Droid X, and Bionic looked grainy and colors looked rather washed out compared to the X. I was never really bothered by the Pentile Matrix screen until I started watching more videos on the Bionic.... Anybody noticing how grainy videos look? The videos were encoded for the Droid X resolution, so maybe that made it look worse on the Bionic?

Just about all of the new phones coming out later this year will range from being comparable to slightly better than the Bionic. Several of them are even inferior to the Bionic in a few spec categories. With the possible exception of one of them having a 1280x720 resolution display, none of the upcoming phones(this year) really put the Bionic to shame in any significant way. The Bionic and the upcoming phones all have very similar dual core processors(The OMAP 4, Exynos, Dual core Snapdragon, and Tegra 2 are virtually identical with the exception of the Tegra 2 lacking a NEON processing unit which puts it at a small disadvantage in some applicatons), qHD or lower displays, 1GB or less RAM, 8MP camera, 1080P camcorder, some have LTE support some don't.

It is really all going to come down to personal preference things like TouchWiz, Sense, or MAP(Motorola Application Platform), AMOLED, Pentile, or SLCD, and phone aesthetics.

Next year however, there will be phones that blow this year's offerings away(Same with every year). Next year we will see quad core processors in phones, phones with 2.5Ghz processors, possibly 2GB of RAM, 1280x720 displays will probably happen on quite a few phones.

If I had a phone that worked great and could afford to wait, I might have. But I didn't, I needed a new phone months ago. I'm very pleased with my Bionic. And Droid is one brand name that I can't seem to bear living without.

I've got a Droid X that is working so wonderfully that I'm not going to upgrade to anything right now. I had the Bionic in my sights at one time, but LTE here in Hawaii missed my home by a couple blocks so since I don't have a discounted upgrade coming until March of 2012, I holding off. I'm hoping for something like the rumored Dinara or maybe something even better by the time next March rolls around.

So we'll see what's coming around Christmas or into the first part of 2012.

The only phone that is going to make me want to upgrade from the Bionic wil be when the updated Lte chipsets which wil be much better when it comes to battery life comes out. I typically get a new phone every 6 months or so, if nothing is out like that come next March I will just keep waiting. No need to make another lateral move.

^I think thats a smart move too. I applaud the folks who are waiting on those improved LTE chips that doesnt have an LTE phone, or a dual core phone...basically folks still rocking the Droid 1, Eris, Droid X1, Droid 2,etc.

^^^ This. The phones coming out in the next 2-3 months are only going to be slight upgrades compared to the Bionic, and they will likely have their own peculiarities. I may be in the minority, but I really like the screen on the Bionic (it's easy to see in bright light, for example). A slightly faster processor is not going to persuade me either. Now having Ice Cream Sandwich would be nice at launch, but we'll definitely get it on the Bionic (hopefully before the end of the year).

Agreed, I don't see myself buying a cheap HTC or Samsung. My Friends have had them and hate them with a passion. There's not one phone on either brand I haven't heard people complain about.l HTC has the shitty interface and Samsung devices take a year to get upgraded.
