Thoughts on Blackberry on Android

JSquaredZ

Lurker
I wanted to let you guys know about a blog post I wrote about Blackberry converting over to the Android platform and how it would be the right thing for Blackberry.

Stalked the forum for a long time, but first time posting something.

First Android was the original Motorola Droid, fyi.

Here is my link. Enjoy and please leave comments if you can. I have no advertising, so this is not a money thing. Just want my ideas to get out there and hear your feedback.

Kind Regards,
JSquaredZ

Here is what I wrote:

One question in many people’s mind is where does Blackberry go from here. They have already stated that they are pivoting to become a software and services company. This leads me to ponder several possibilities for where they go with the Blackberry OS story in the future.

One possibility is that the rumors are all false and Blackberry will stay with their current QNX underpinnings. This would probably be the final nail in their coffin, if this was the decision. Time has proven that Blackberry missed the boat on getting an OS developed that would get traction with application developers. In fact, today a majority of apps on the Blackberry are ported applications running on the built-in Android runtime environment (albeit poorly and slowly, with many compatibility issues).

Also, since Blackberry is a smallish company whose workforce has already been shrinking, future development of the QNX part of the Blackberry OS will take valuable resources from future development of the top portion of the stack, which is the only portion of the Blackberry experience that adds value to the user. In other words the QNX portion of the Blackberry stack is muda.

Another possibility is that Blackberry will adopt the Android platform as its core OS environment. This would offload their organization from having to provide the valuable resources for fully developing the plumbing of the OS, while at the same time... Read more

My ex wife stupidity bought a used 1st gen bb playbook and I spent hours trying to get it to run apks before telling her to bin it in disgust after I peed on it!

I saw one earlier this week, but the fact that I noticed this tells you how rare they've become (and the UK was one of their holdouts when their popularity started to drop). I can't think of anyone I know who still uses one.

Went down town to Cash Converters here in Seville last Saturday and there were a ton of second hands one for sale in the display case. Didn't pay attention to the prices, but I can't imagine they were very high as you could buy some mid level android phones for around fifty Euros! I've never used one myself, but I do know there is a huge group of BB chat fans that have been wanting someone to port it over to Android for ages.

I had a Pearl Flip, and I liked the way it was organized. It did use a Micro card.

I wouldn't mind a physical keyboard, either. The BB that I saw that mentioned Android looked like a Motorola RIZR.

If the phone would run the apps I use on a big enough screen -----
and had enough speed and storage --------- (I want birding apps open before bird flies away)
The keyboard would have to go full qwerty, though.

They are rumored to be coming out with an android phone with a slide out full keyboard. Google blackberry slider.

Blackberry messenger has been available on iOS and android for a while now in their respective app stores.

I stand corrected sir, thanks for pointing that out to me. Guess it just shows how big a BB fan I am, lol. I am, however, a big IM fan, so now that you were kind enough to point out that it's available I am going to try it!

Hey no problem. My brother keeps me looped in to the happenings. He is a big crackberry addict. Bbm is a great instant messenger so I'm glad it's now multiplatform.

It's more about the apps that run. Usually the informational type apps I use only run on android or 1OS. If I want those apps, I don't have much choice. At least there are more Android phones and you can pick and choose. A BB with a keyboard and a trackball could be a useful new form factor if unlocked.

Even the two apps I have on Linux aren't as good as these. The old Palm platform had one, still around, but only for Apple.

The new Classic is a very nice device for those who require a QWERTY kb. Decent-sized (and looking) display, built like a tank, and is (imho) better than anything for text-intensive input since the late-lamented HTC Desire Z/T-Mobile G2.

I have a Z30 for work and just traded up my non-work iPhone 5S for a GS6. I really like the Z30, and I love the S6. They have very similar interfaces, although the S6 is a lot more customizable and overall seems less buggy. And, obviously Android takes the cake for apps.

This will be a very smart move for BB.
