thunderbolt $250? atrix $150?????

So wait, Hold on a minute! You have used a real 4G phone in the wild? Like one that was a real production model? One that came in an at&t retail box or vzw retail box? That's cool if you have, cause no one I know or have red has, because it hasn't BEEN RELEASED YET! ON EITHER NETWORK! AND WHEN IT IS WE WILL ALL KNOW THE REAL TRUTH AS TO HOW VZW'S 4G PERFORMS, AND HOW WELL AT&T'S 4G PERFORMS!

What you and a lot of other people think is that because a beta tester, or someone at CES (SAID) its Fast or stable, etc, it doesn't mean anything or hold any merit until its been sent into the public, meaning used by a wide majority of people, and used in different areas!

Now to really answer your question....Yes I think the back and fourth crap with the Atrix vs Thunderbolt stuff is stupid, and a lot of people sound like Apple Fanboys when talking about which one is better? Who knows which one will be better? I don't, you don't, nobody does, because they will be the First of they're kind running on brand new 4G networks that have never been used to power a phone until now. Now my credit does lean towards vzw as a company, and a network slightly. Because in my experience they're 3G is pretty solid in a wide majority of areas. So if 4G LTE is all its cracked up to be, the Thunderbolt will be sick Fast! I'm one of those people that say...A phone is only as Good as the network it runs on! But as I said we will see how both these monsters perform on the day they both hit the ground running, and get released to the Public! I have service with both providers, and will get my paws on both, and be posting my experiences with both the Atrix and Thunderbolt when launched...can't wait!
 
Easy guys.

First, it has been tested in real world. Please are using via USB on laptops. It's fast. The only question is, when everyone has it (a year from now) will it be just as fast.

Yes I've used vzw's 4G on my laptop, but to me that means nothing as far as how fast it'll be running on my phone that is housing a brand new to the industry 4G radio. These radios are something new, and we'll just have to see how nice they play with these devices. I'm thinking it should be great! But who knows how the network will hold up with tons of people jumping on board, like you said, A year from now! A main concern is Battery Life with these new devices running on 4G, couple that together with the addition of duel core in some of them and who knows how performance will be...A La Atrix! Honestly I hope they both perform well...

Did I offend you? If so, I am sorry. As I said in the post script, I was curious about your claims, not trying to be a jerk.

I think you have fair points. However, the radio has been tested with the network. Verizon is notorious for testing things. Qualcom tested all the radio chips on the network, and I am sure verizon verified those tests. That is the only way to make sure the chip actually works. As for the network, there are 4G modems that have tested it.

back to the pricing issue. now the bionic's price has been leaked as $150 as well. if this stands, and if the thunderbolt is as expensive as feared (and my verizon rep commented that it would be) then i think this is a case of "if you want the FIRST 4g phone, you'll have to pay out the wazoo." no doubt once the next wave of 4g phones hit shortly thereafter, verizon will cut the price dramatically.
 
I have a Droid Eris ( yes the dreaded slow crappy Eris). I was so tempted over the summer to get the X but held off, then came the Droid 2 Global but I held off. However for the TB I wont! This will be lightning yrs ahead of the Eris. Funny thing as bad as the Eris is it still hold a higher resale value ($132) than the original Droid ($52). Disappointed in that TB doesnt use GSM and is on CDMA.

Probably. I was going to wait until it was rooted anyway, so unless it is rooted very quickly a la EVO (and not the Incredible, which took some time) I will not be getting it too soon. So I can wait for the price to settle at $200 if not lower. :)

This is my concern as well. Tests on CNET videos in cherrypicked areas don't say anything about what the majority of US customers will actually get on their phones day to day, in their basements, at their jobs, out on the farm, in schools, stores, wherever. Will it be an improvement over 3G? Sure. But enough to justify the added cost and reduced GB cap?

On a computer, like what you have, Sean, I can see 4G being justified for sure. But on a phone??? There may be a few who actually "need" that 4G speed on their phone. But I been that number is even smaller than the rooting/tweaking community. I bet it's not even HALF. Think about it. I am a rooter/tweaker. 3G is plenty fast for what I need. It's fast enough for my brother and his Fascinate, and he's a rooter/tweaker/modder just like me. My dad, my wife, my sister, and my co-workers that own the Fascinate or Droid X all have Verizon's 3G. They never complain about the speed. They can stream Youtube videos, web pages load quickly, Facebook updates instantly, photos upload quickly, and at least half of their waking hours are in an area where they have WiFi anyways.

Oh, and did I mention all of us have unlimited data for $30 a month?

I've said it once and I'll say it again, unless pricing is similar to 3G, OR they make it optional and don't charge people for it that can't get it:

4G = easy moneygrab way to screw people
 
if they do in fact keep it at 249.99 we will see how many fanboys there really are. I mean people say crap about the iphone but if people will spend 150 more for pretty much the same phone as on another carrier that shows alot.

I can tell you im going to.... I will not leave verizon anytime soon. and ill actually be paying for it on a 1 year contract. call me an idiot but in my area verizon demolishes at&t

Same with us too. We had sprint for a while, moved up to this town and VZW is the big contender here. They only just opened up a ATT store around us a few months back.
 
weve got "ok" at&t coverage but we have amazing verizon coverage. I work 60 miles away from where I live and am lucky enough to have LTE both where I live AND where I work (DC area and Baltimore area) which is a huge reason im staying with verizon and going with the thunderbolt.
I've got an X right now, and its a great phone, but I always get the newest stuff.... confessions of a phone addict lol

Hahaha. You sir, make a great point. I just get frustrated whenever I see customers getting ripped off. Nothing infuriates me more than paying for something someone doesn't get, or being forced to pay more for something you may not want, or need. But you have reason. I did get a bit carried away. I promise I only have every consumer's best interest at heart, and merely don't want anyone getting the wool pulled over their eyes by fancy talking snake oil salesmen and their fancy commercials and cnet videos ... :)

Edit: The Inspire does look remarkably similar, but it has an even further crippled battery at 1230 mAh according to HTC's website. While it probably isn't worth a $150 difference in price, having a stronger battery is at least worth something.
 
low and behold...Alot of us will stand on a stack of Bibles and state how Good Verizon works for us! For me it works very well, hey if 4G works as well and as fast as VZW is bragging about, I'll pay a little extra! But like I just said....A LITTLE***

Just like Kronan ststed, 3G is plenty fast for mostly all people! But more speed for me is always a welcomed addition : )

And yes, whats up with that...$99 for the inspire? $250 for us on VZW : (

looking at the specs, i suppose SOME kind of premium for the thunderbolt makes sense. verizon's LTE is a better, faster network than at&t's quasi-4g network. and there's a front facing camera. and there's a 32 gig sd card thrown in, which is like 75-100 bucks in and of itself. keep going back n forth on this one. to thunderbolt or not to thunderbolt... i have a rooted eris which is killing me!!!

As long as the Bionic isn't MORE locked down than the DX (I'm hoping it's less so...), I'm still leaning more towards it than the Thunderbolt now. There are other differences where the Thunderbolt is better than the equivalent on ATT, and the one you didn't mention was the even weaker battery at 1230 mAh, according to HTC's website. Why a 4.3" screen would only have a 1230 mAh battery is beyond me.

The Bionic is going to have a monster battery, a monster processor, and HDMI out. It's a true step up from a Fascinate.

If I were looking at the Fascinate, which can be had for $48 new or for a 2 year upgrade, versus $250 or even $150 for the Thunderbolt, it would be a tough choice. The Thunderbolt is also not a true "upgrade" from the Fascinate, especially since Froyo is really truly now just around the corner, and feedback from the leaked 2.2 ROM is so far overwhelmingly positive.

The reason I don't consider it a true upgrade and more of a lateral maneuver - or sidestep, if you will - is because while it has a little bit faster CPU, it still has a slower GPU. It has the same resolution as the Fascinate, but has a larger screen, therefore you're losing a bit of the sharpness that would normally be the number one advantage of super LCD. The Fascinate is thinner, which is definitely an advantage, and lighter, which will please some and worry others. The battery is heftier on the Fascinate. The camera on the Fascinate is also superior to HTC's current crop of 8MP cameras (as well as motorola's), but rumor has it that the TB will have a brand new much improved camera/flash. I will give HTC the benefit of the doubt. But what features, other than the aluminum finish and the kickstand really make it stand out from the Fascinate? On the DX, you get the larger screen, plus an extra 50 lines of resolution so you don't sacrifice any sharpness. The HTC has dual noise cancelling microphones, which should be better than what comes with the Fascinate, but the SuperAMOLED screen is much more contrasty, and can much more easily be seen at all angles and even in bright sunlight.

The two phones have their pro's and con's for sure, but I honestly don't consider one superior over the other. Both are superior in some things, and inferior in others, and when you factor prices into the equation, it makes the Fascinate even more appealing.

The two things that impressed me about the Thunderbolt are the reported speedy boot time - which is only helpful when I'm tweaking and need frequent reboots. Once I get a stable kernel and the phone the way I want it, I only reset a couple times a week - and the ability to call and browse while on 3G at the same time, which again, I would only need on extremely rare occasions. I would much rather have HDMI, which is very disappointingly absent from the Thunderbolt.

So now I'm leaning towards the Bionic, which has HDMI, quarter HD resolution, and a monster battery, and will likely have Moto's exceptional noise cancelling mics. I just hope they don't lock up the bootloader even more than the DX ... :confused: If they do, I truly won't know what phone to get with my upgrade, and might just get the VZ iPhone 4 since I can get one of those brand spankin' new for free right when they come out.

No, not "basically the same phone". The Inspire is more a cheap EVO clone. Ok the Bolt and Inspire have the same amount of Ram and same Android version. But thats about it.
The Bolt will have more onboard memory (4gb to 8gb and I'm not counting the 32gb chip preinstalled on the Bolt), the Inspire is still rocking the 1st gen Snapdragon and unlike the Bolt's 2nd gen chip (8255 to 8655), No front facing camera on the Inspire unlike the Bolt, and the Inspire has a smaller battery (1250 to 1400).
Based on that I would put the Thunderbolt a bit above the Inspire and worthy of a higher cost.

Actually you said the GPU on the Tbolt would be slower then the Fascinate, that was the point I was contending as thats what the article says.

Depends on whose benchmarks you look at:

I'll wait for real world tests when both devices in testing have 2.2 on them. The Fascinate is just around the corner. And even if you're right about the Adreno being better, it's still not going to be a monumental improvement over the Galaxy S. And the screen is still the same resolution but bigger, and the SLCD technology, which for many, would be a downgrade.

I'd still rather wait for a device like the Bionic with the dual core Tegra 2, that will likely best the TB and the Galaxy S series, all with quarter HD instead of WVGA.

But if Motorola locks it down like Fort Knox, I won't know WHAT phone to get then ... :confused:
