Accelerometer and Gyroscope are a bit different. Accelerometer is does motion of a plane but while gyroscope can rotate around gravity or an axis
But they can work together to create a 3DS 3d-like effects

I did hear that they tweaked the heck out of that device and optimized it really well given the hardware it has. I'm not the engineering type so I'm not sure what's all involved there but it sounds as if they are "stretching" the limits of what the hardware was designed to do.

Not bothered by the lack of a gyroscope either. Next device will likely have one. They just aren't mainstream yet.
