Root Thunderbolt Root/Unroot Thread

Scotty, you coming over to the Galaxy Nexus land?
ive got one... i was tickled with it for the first week or so,but im having a hard time warming up to samsung. i dont like not havin an sd card, and IMO the device itself isnt all that... being a google phone and having stock ICS were really the only thinngs i liked about it. havent actually used it since picking up a rezound

updated OP with "fre3vo method" of rooting 2.11.605.9(temp root, then run revolutionary)

downgrading is no longer neccessary :)

Ok so nothing like overlooking something simple (like I'm sure I have) but I've downgraded to 2.11.605.5, installed all the appropriate drivers, put my phone in charge only mode, turned on usb debugging, loaded up revolutionary, waiting for device.... and still waiting. read thru the thread here, uninstalled all syncing software, uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled them. rebooted phone, rebooted pc. ran everything again and still waiting. Switched cables, switched usb ports still waiting. any ideas????

youve allready done everyting i can think of to reccomend, but if youve got usb debugging on,its got to be a driver prollem.

try finding your phone in device manager, then manually update the drivers using revolutionarys or htc syc files.

there were some files missing in the revolutionary folder. adb and AdbWinApi.dll

i copied those from another folder I had on my computer and it went right thru

4)open the DHDDowngrade.zip file, then the folder contained inside of it. transfer "Fre3vo" into the tbolt2 folder with adb/fastboot.(ignore the rest of the files in DHDDongrade,fre3vo is the only one you need)

how do i do this part?

nevermind. literally just copied and pasted the fre3vo into the other folder. everything works now :) rooted once again.

Are the MD5's in the OP for the hboot only and no hboot taken from the multiupload files or the mirror files? I've download the mirror files from wupload each 6 times now and every one has a different MD5 from what is posted, but all of those are the same MD5 on each download.

hboot_ONLY is giving me an MD5 e1e330356ec5c889a92be1b5ef6c853d
no_hboot is giving me an error - unable to read file directory PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9

I have to send this phone in for warranty replacement by thursday, I rooted it with revolutionary and these are the only 2 working downloads of the hboot only and no hboot files I've been able to find.

The mirrors are rhe exact same files, so the md5 should be the same. I will double check wen i get home :)

ahhh. you are checking the md5 of the hboot iself inside the .zip file. this is prolly why it is giving you an error trying to read the "no hboot" file,as it contains severl different images, each of wich will have their own md5.

check the md5 of the zipped downloads and you should get the correct md5 sums. i just downloaded and verified hboot only, the copy of no hboot i have on my pc(the one i uploaded) and i am downlaoding it just to be sure. wupload is slow, says its got an hour left. Ill let ya know when its done, but you should be good to go if you checked the ziped files :)

I'm a newb at checking md5's. How should I be checking these to make sure the numbers match? I used md5sums through the command window from an old ROM when I had my Droid X to get the numbers I posted above.

I tried using md5summer but when i choose the zip file PG05IMG_hboot or PG05IMG_no_hboot the verify sums button greys out.

Edit: Found my mistake. I wasn't putting the suffix on the file name. Once i ran md5sums on the Zip file itself (and added .zip) the numbers match. I'm good to go now :) Thanks for all the help Scotty.

awsome! glad you got your issues worked out. not that it matters much now,but the no hboot file i downloaded had the same md5(dozed off before it finished :o )

also thanks for adding what was wrong with your md5 summer, that info will likely help alot of folks in the future

adb devices (should return your serial number)
It does nothing. I wait and wait and wait and nothing happens. Now what? I followed the directions to a t. I used the same computer to root my nexus

-make sure there are drivers installed(samsung and htc are not neccessarily the same ;))
-make sure phone is in charge only mode, and usb debugging checked.

if the second thing checks out, then you have a driver issue. if youve just installed them,a reboot of phone and/or pc sometimes helps, and sometimes switching usb ports/cables helps also. if not, then find your phone in charge only and fastboot modes, and manually update the drivers, pointing your pc to revolionarys unzipped folder,or htc sync drivers

for what its worth, all i did on my laptop was download revolutionarys drivers and run it. the wizard installed the drivers and there were no issues,so even if you think drivers should be present,it wouldnt hurt to go ahead and run revolutionarys driver installer.

Trying to re-root lol. But running into an issue. I'm up the part where I need to go into recovery(Revolutionary downloaded it fine) and I'm getting stuck because the phone is reading the PG05IMG in HBOOT and then just wants to upgrade my phone. I am doing this w/ the 605.9 load too.

Edit: Solved my problem.

glad you got it. :) for others that see this, the fix would be to remove PG05IMG from the sd card. you can do this by booting the phone normally, then mount sd card as disc drive to pc,or by using a file manager.

in the event of a non working phone, simply put the sd into a card reader.

so are ya re-rooted? :D

Trying to unroot. Do you have another link to the files? I try the mirror but it's downloading at .1k/sec.

sorry,no other links.

why are you trying to unroot?

the replacement had some issues so my girlfriend is going to return it. They sent a brand new one that's sitting here waiting to be rooted.

Looks like unrooting went well. When I flashed the second file I thought it said it was going to reboot but it didn't and I had to restart it. What should I verify before returning it?
