Root thunderbolt rooting methods(updated 8-24-2011)

Question, I read somewhere that I need to have a firmware version older than 1.12.605.9 to root. Mine is 1.70.605.0. I took an OTA a few weeks back that killed my free wifi hotspot, and I'm guessing this might have upgraded the firmware as well. Will this new method from Revolutionary work with my phone?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm new to this and the amount of info is quite overwhelming.

Thanks in advance!

im not sure where everyone is finding these "you have to have firmware x.xx.xxx.x in order to root" restrictions. even the old fashioned manual method worked just fine on all firmware up to the GB leaks(anything that was 1.xx.xxx.x)

the answer to your specific question is yes, revolotionary works just fine as long as you have a 1.04.0000 or 1.05.0000 hboot. this is pretty much any firmware youre likely to encounter. :)

run that sucker... your cigar and blazer are waiting ;)

Okay, thanks for the info and quick reply.

I'm sure this won't be my last question on this forum

Well, I just rooted my TB. This is the forst time I've ever tried rooting, and I can honestly say that this method is rediculously easy. Nates video is great, the entire process takes ten minutes and it was basically impossible for me to mess up.

Awesome
Afterwards don't you wonder why did I hesitate? I did :-)

Hi, I am new here and following the steps on your video. Never rooted before but it seems simple. The problem I ran into is I cannot find that su file in the video description, only the HTC Drivers and tbolt.zip. Tried using the tbolt.zip file on my phone but it says installation aborted. Right now I am stuck, at the part where phone is mounted as USB drive and need to install the su file.. please help. Thx!

for others searching for superuser, its in the common problems and questions section of the information page(you did read that page, right? ;))

Does Revolutionary give me root?
No. You will need to flash this zipfile from recovery.

alternatively, you can use this one: working superuser for newer sense roms this is the one ive been using,in theory it should be a little bit better. it puts the su binary in /system/xbin instead of /system/bin.

complete noob to the android platform/adb/rooting/blahblahblah/etc but i got the recovery root done in less than 15 minutes. finally got root!!!!!!!

now i just have to figure out how to get BAMF forever 1.0.3 on my phone ha

writing 'hboot'... FAILED (remote: image error! (Platform check f

Edit: I dint see all of the above. Hang on...

Sorry it taking me so long. Nothing obviously wrong, and I'm driving,so Im trying to find a chance to study it.

Please do me a favor and drive safe and when you got the time, be it in a couple of hours or next week, reply to me then. But dont drive and try to reply :P
I can wait! I got a spare nokia 5800 that im using untill i ship my desire to htc anyway =).

Yes i have a desire...
Read on another forum that desire could use the same techniq and got linked to this post.

As long as the "unlock" command is the same,it should work, but you won't be able to use hbooteng.nb0. You'll have to substitute that with a desire specific one, unless it uses the same hboots

What is your factory s-on hboot?

Also, the Ruu and hboot pgo5img files won't work for you either.

Ohh darn.

how do i se what my factor s-on hboot is?

i got a ruu that i alredy flashed my phone with, just need to remove revolutionary.

hboot pgo5img?

I should say that im good at understanding stuff but that sounds like greek to me :P Iv never unrooted/removed s on a phone befor :P

Hboot is your bootloader. S-on is how phones come,it means "security on"

I assume the Ruu you flashed was for the current firmware for your phone. It will have a bootloader inside it. Do you have a link to it? Later tonite I can download it,get you an image, and modify the commands a little for you :)
